These are all true statements.

But if you had Messier and Vigneault standing there, ready to be hired, who do you pick?

No way i hire Messier, who has no coaching experience at a high level, when I'm attempting to win a Stanley Cup.

John Stevens could be a better selection then Vigneault.

Oh no doubt I would take AV over Messier every day of the week.

About John Stevens, does he have any offensive responsibilities at all for the Kings? I know he was in charge of the PK and the defense which has been very good under him.

i'm a little disappointed that i havent read Bouchers name at all in terms of getting an interview.

dont want to hire him? fine.

but at least get the guy an interview.

But if they don't want to hire him, why would they delay the process by interviewing him?

also ...

OFFENSIVE SKILLS WHICH NEED TO BE PRACTICED ON A REGULAR BASIS:

• One time shooting
• One touch passing
• Deception, look away, fake shot, fake pass
• Skating deception, change of pace
• Timing to hit the openings with speed
• Offensive anticipation… “thinkingâ€
• Threat to score from a distance
• Vision and pre-play awareness
• Strength on the puck (protection skills)
• Willingness to stay in front of the net and in front of shots
• Triple threat position on the rush…get the puck on your forehand
• Defense dragging the blueline and getting shots through
• Open yourself up or uncheck yourself to be available in a scoring area
• Ability to play rebounds
• Shooting in stride…ability to beat players one-on-one
• “Good stick†to steal pucks and create transition

:handclap:

First two things up there should be
1. Breakout
2. Entering the zone

Both of those are horrendous

Messier as head coach.
Greatsky as assistant coach.
Most legendary coaching staff although imagine having to fire them after a few seasons lol

A few? Trottier made it 66 games. I give Messier maybe 50.

The only thing scarier than Sather hiring Messier is the prospect that he'd have to fire Messier. The whole thing is just a mess - its unbelievable this Messier as coach thing wasnt squashed from the beginning.

Good point, was thinking about that recently. How would he ever have the guts to fire Mess or Gretz? Can't believe it took him 50 something games to fire Trottier.

Can someone give me the low down on Stevens?

What's the report on Stevens in his style of play?

Posted earlier in the thread by Brian Boyle, which he read on the Kings board.

I liked him and didn't mind the fact the media and some fans thought he was too staid . Philly fans like fire.
He won a Calder Cup (AHL Champ) with the Phantoms and worked well with the younger players. Something that he continued when he moved up from the Phantoms to the parent club Flyers
He led them to the ECF in 2008 and although Richards played every game in 2009 and had his best year, he blew out both shoulders and needed surgery on both, thus the Flyers were out fast that year I the playoffs. They got off to a slow start in 2009 and Ed being impatient, fired him. And I think it was because he was too laid back and Ed wanted a coach more like him, and there was Lavvy available.

He was criticized by thje local media (imagine that) for being too close to his players, esp the young guys and there were plenty. And that those young guns needed a firmer hand. He was esp close to Richards (and said when Richards was traded to the Kings he was almost like a son to him) and I think that him being fired affected Richards for awhile and Lavvy was 360 in the other direction. Richards maintained a close relationship after Stevens left and having John on the Kings made his transition ALOT easier.

But he got results, he taught his players how to defend their zone first and it never hurt the skilled players, they got offensive results, Carter scored a bunch and Gagne and Richards did as well > ( Between the 3 of them 2008-09 they put up over 100 goals Lupol, Hartnell and Knuble added close to 80) Richards best years offensively were with Stevens. Carter put up 46 goals and 84 points under JS.

I still think they got rid of him because they wanted Lavvy. I think had they given Stevens more time that year, he would have had the same results. A good part of that team was Stevens team and for me, the reason they went deep in 2010 was not because of Lavvy's system as much as it was the way those forwards (from stevens0 could defend their zone. Richards, Carter and Gagne were all good 2 way players and that was a big difference on that 2010 team. Now their all gone for the most part and the Lavvy Flyers can't even defend their own shadow.

A lot of the Kings success is tied to his defense and PK work. And if not in Vancover (which I think is not a good fit, given the team there) where ever he lands, he'll do well.

To this day I still can't beleive he Hired Trottier..

This is a great look back at that 2002 coaching search thru NY Post headlines:

http://snyrangersblog.com/2013-rang...rangers-2002-coaching-search-ny-post-edition/

Herb Brooks was the lead horse but got cold feet. Also of note, Brooksy was advocating for Messier to step behind the bench as an assistant back then. Brooksy changes his endorsement from Herb Brooks to Larry Robinson to Ron Wilson (who he contends Slats wouldn't interview because Wilson coached USA beat Sather coached Canada in 1996 World Cup). Towards end, Sather considers jumping behind the bench from the start and adding Messier as an assistant.

Also worth a look maybe is this Post article about coaching in NY from 2004 in the Post. This quote stuck out:

One day while Fran Fraschilla was still St. John's basketball coach, he was talking to another New York coach about their position in the Big Apple.

"He said, 'In New York, it never ends well,'" said Fraschilla, who declined to reveal the other coach's identity. "In 90 percent of the cases, he's right."

Think that's overstating things? Take a look at each of the New York area professional teams, as well as St. John's. Now name the coach of each team two years ago and how many are left: Jim Fassel - fired; Bobby Valentine - fired; Don Chaney - fired; Byron Scott - fired; Kevin Constantine - fired; Bryan Trottier - fired; Peter Laviolette - fired; Mike Jarvis - fired. If this is beginning to sound like the latest Donald Trump TV show, it's because only Herm Edwards and Joe Torre remain from the spring of 2002.

Do Messier/Sather know what they would be getting into?

Oh no doubt I would take AV over Messier every day of the week.

Yea. Its tough. Really hope Sather doesn't mess this up.

For all we know Messier might be a great coach. But i don't feel its time for the Rangers to try that experiment.

Its a sensitive time for this club. The right moves this summer could set us up for contention for the next couple of years. Including the right coaching staff.

Do we risk Lundqvist's prime years, risk the chance he walks.

Vigneault hasn't had great success with the Caucks in the playoffs. But the way he utilizes his roster. He uses his full bench. He may be able to get a lot out of our lineup. He wasn't my first choice. But he's a good choice.

Agree it would be awful. Worse if Leetch is a part of the staff.
