Confirmed with Link: Rangers Name Alain Vigneault Head Coach

• Defencemen need to look for the smart play.
• Allow passes to the front of the net or through the middle.
• Discourage the “dump out†or “no look rim†style of play.
• Safe plays stifle creativity.
• An area pass is still a direct pass…utilize bank passes off the boards and laying pucks into open spaces for team mates to skate into.
• The players away from the puck have a responsibility to get their stick open and available for direct passes (much like a receiver in football).
• Use of deception “look away†to have more time to make a play.
• Practice transition off the back check and their rush chances.

• One time shooting
• One touch passing
• Deception, look away, fake shot, fake pass
• Skating deception, change of pace
• Timing to hit the openings with speed
• Offensive anticipation… “thinkingâ€
• Threat to score from a distance
• Vision and pre-play awareness
• Strength on the puck (protection skills)
• Willingness to stay in front of the net and in front of shots
• Triple threat position on the rush…get the puck on your forehand
• Defense dragging the blueline and getting shots through
• Open yourself up or uncheck yourself to be available in a scoring area
• Ability to play rebounds
• Shooting in stride…ability to beat players one-on-one
• “Good stick€ to steal pucks and create transition

One of my wishes is to see more stability in the makeup of the lines.
There are many permutations and combinations, not all worth exploring repeatedly. I did not appreciate that aspect of Tortorella's coaching strategy, and still think it is detrimental in the long run.

And yes, the Rangers made the playoffs got to the second round. Since the goal is continuous improvement, maybe letting players get to know each other's moves and tendencies will help the team.
 
This Vigneault guy doesn't really sound all that appealing, nor does Stevens.... I'll take Messier even without his formal coaching experience... The guy understands the game and how to speak to the players & motivate them. If a better option comes up along the way it would be easy for Messier to slide back into a management role.... After having Renney and Tortorella for the last several years, I'm of the opinion that it can't hurt to try....

I definitely think that its essential to have a coach that knows what he is doing with this team. Especially for this team, because I think our identity in terms of X and Os is questionable.

The game is ever-changing. You can end up wrong, and no good ever comes out of it. We did end up wrong under Torts. We are not going in the right direction. We are not like NJD who it seems like never change no matter who is behind their bench. Under Renney we played an extreme puck-possession game, and atleast with the shortage of talent we had, we slowed down so much that we constantly faced a set defense and we lost our offense. Under Torts we played an extreme simplistic game that was all about getting the puck up ice ASAP, a system designed to get you through the neutralzone before teams could set up a trap, but we faced teams that didn't 1-3-1 trap but instead just dropped back, fetched the puck and hammered away on us for full periods at the time.

Damage has been done.

Years have been lost.

Duncan Keith never becomes the player he is today if he plays for a coach that just asks him to play like our D's have lately. That Duncan Keith at best reach the heights of say a Kevin Bieksa. That is IMO a cold hard fact. If Pavel Datsyuk was drafted by say Calgary, I would put the odds of him playing more than 80 games in the NHL at lower than 10%.

The last three years, Torts has hawked McD, Staal and Girardi and forced them to constantly just slap the puck up along the boards. I really really really turned on Torts when we lost 8-4 with 90% of our best roster against EV Zug during pre-season last year. I don't care that we lost. I don't care that we gave up 8 goals. Taking into account that it was on big ice and even if our players didn't care about the game, I was horrified at how we looked when EV Zug backed down on the big ice and forced us to pass the puck up ice. Sure, we were forced to play a game that wasn't our game. But its how we did it that was so scary. We just couldn't even pass the puck up ice at a level compareable to like a 3rd tier team in Sweden. We tried, but just could not make the passes over-weight no-good amatures with a full time job hockey players in the Swedish 3rd tier league makes on a shift by shift basis. That Boston makes in the NHL on a shift by shift basis. That Philly makes in the NHL on a shift by shift basis. Not to mention the puck-possesion teams like Detroit or Chicago.

Somewhere along the line its fine to be extremely consistent and have a very clear cut game plan, sure, but I can just not see how -- considering how the game looks 2013 with alot of creativity out there -- it can work to be so completely and utterly unable to execute fundamental plays outside your game plan.

From my point of view, it just became extremely obvious that Torts had been caught with his pants down by putting a team on the ice that he had coached for three years that just had not been drilled properly to play in the NHL considering how the game looks after the lockout. And -- no matter what -- like even if the style in it self worked, it could never be motivated to suck so much in these areas because more or less 5 to 10 times per period we would still end up moving the puck out of our own end during line changes and what not.

We cannot afford going wrong when going forward after this season.
 
I'm not going to quote that massive post so people don't have to scroll down, but excellent post Ola. The only thing I disagree on is that Datsyuk would have been a star regardless of which organization he ended up in ;)

Andy Murray coaches Western Michigan. He has a long resume. Murray is known as a strong X and O guy. The Rangers would pay him more than Western Michigan pays Murray.

Andy Murray is from the same school as Renney in terms of X and Os but has a diffrent mentality.

I still don't get why we don't take the step all the way and puts three coaches in charge. Murray, Messier and Mike Johnston/John Stevens or some combination like that.

Anders Hedberg should approch Slats and run down how Skellefteå AIK has structured their coaching duties. Slats said in his interview that it was hard to find someone who was both Renney and Tortorella. And it is hard to find one coach like that.

Put Schoenfield in a newly designed role and put Messier, Murray and Johnston in charge of coaching, with a real assistent to do the "dirty work". Give the coaches set roles when facing the team, but joint responsibility and power when deciding what shall be presented to the players. If they can't agree on the X and O's for example, they take it to Schoney who got last say (on, and only on, issues brought to him by the coaches). That's how Skellefteås coaching is set-up. And the approch several other teams in the SEL have.

Duties:
-Messier: Lines, D units and game plan (meaning match ups, special focus on players etc).
-Murray: X and O. Scouting opposition.
-Johnston/Stevens: PP & PK and practises.
-Assistent: Preparing video. Preparing practises. Assisting the coaches when talking to players.

When deciding if Rick Nash should be left wing or right wing, who he should play with or on what line he should play on, Messier presents his suggestion. I want to use these lines. If Murray says, nah I really think we should use this lineup instead they talk it through. Can we try this first? If we dont' get the sought after effect, we try that. If they can't agree, they go to Schoenfield and say, hey we think this is a really tough decision to make and we can't agree. Present their case and Schoenfield makes the call. Or vice versa if Messier has objections on Murray's X and Os.

You can attract better people with more prominant roles to give out. You eliminate the risk of going completely wrong with more competence behind the bench. Etc. You need to start with three guys who more or less agrees with each other.

Messier left the Rangers meetings yesterday

The meetings, chaired by general manager Glen Sather, will conclude today. Mark Messier, a candidate for the coaching assignment, was en route yesterday to Chicago, where tonight he will present the Mark Messier Leadership Award to one of three finalists, including the Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews, the Kings’ Dustin Brown and the Senators’ Daniel Alfredsson.

Now the rest of the Rangers brain trust will be able to tell Sather he is crazy without Messier being in the room;)

Dreger said yesterday the direction where the Rangers want to take their team. By that statement,it means two things. The Rangers want to open up the system and continue playing the young guys. That doesn't describe Tippett. He is the opposite. Vigneault is more open that Tippett. Many young players broke in and/or established themselves under Vigneault. He was tough on Mason Raymond. Hodgson too.

Mark Jackson made the jump to coaching from the TV booth with no experience. He hired Mike Malone who was a long term NBA assistant coach. He was the highest paid NBA assistant coach before taking the Kings head coaching job. Jackson has a young team. Not very good in year one with the lockout. Made the playoffs and they upset Denver in the first round. Lost to San Antonio.

Messier will need an experienced coach with NHL coaching experience. Head coaching experience.

Or go in a different direction with Mike Johnston who has coached NHL and junior players. He will play the young guys.

A few days ago,Lindy Ruff was spotted in the airport in Vancouver.

Both of them were in VAN to interview for the coaching gig.

Alain Vigneault has been spotted on a flight out of Ottawa to here this morning. Vigneault lives somewhere in Quebec during the summers.

The Rangers brass is still in California. Vigneault getting a tour of the Rangers facility in Westchester County? Looks like he is. I am sure there is someone in the Rangers organization in NY who will give Vigneault the tour. Everyone isn't in California.

Alex Case is responsible for the MSG training facility. Case used to work Schoenfeld in Hartford. He nows works for the Rangers.
