Montoya as 6th overall really isn't as bad of a miss as people think. The five players drafted immediately after him:

Rostislav Olesz
Alexandre Picard
Ladislav Smid
Boris Valabik
Lauri Tukonen

The most successful player drafted the closest to Montoya is Drew Stafford. Would Drew Stafford have really made a difference? And was drafting Stafford 6th overall an even remotely realistic possibility at the time?

Well, we'd have a few less losses in recent history.

Yes. I'd seen him ranked in the top 10 a lot. I believe he was #6 on the Rangers list.

Still, it's hardly anything worth pining over. That '04 draft was just awful.

Just proves that Sather should have started the flushing out of the roster earlier than 2004.

Absolutely. Underlines the risk associated with trying to accomplish the lion's share of a "rebuild" (or as close to one as you will get in NY) through one draft. You would have thought Slats would have learned that from Smith's 99 draft, a big reason he got the job in NY. It has to be a process. Drafts are a crapshoot anyway. Even less likely to succeed in trying to get it all done in one draft. Chances of having the Kessel, Lucic, Marchand draft that Gorton had are absurdly low.

Good points, but man does it blow that our highest pick in forever ends up playing more games for the Islanders than us.

You are forgetting Radulov, who was very much part of the discussion. He liked the Rangers and many believed he would have come to NY to play. He slid cause of the KHL factor, but NY would have been a totally different situation than a place like Nashville.

Many on this board actually wanted Radulov. I was an Olesz fan.

Stafford was also in the conversation bigtime, Sather knows his father well, watched Stafford play as a youngster. It's one of the reasons I didn't want him picked ;)

Alain Vigneault. Very impressive interview with the Rangers. Slats likes to drag these things out. Dallas wants to hire a coach.

Dreger expects Vigneault to end up in Dallas.

:shakehead

Classic. Just classic.

Sather drags his feet and winds up with Messier, a guy with no experience that no other team is even thinking about touching for a coaching job.

There is no way Sather hires Messier. He knows that if he does Henrik is as good as gone.

He won't take that gamble.

(I hope)

Yep just heard that. Basically said he'd be shocked if AV didn't wind up in Dallas because Sather works on his own timeline, Nill and the Stars want to make a move as soon as possible, and that "the Rangers are leaning on Messier" whatever that means.

Dreger also made a comment about the direction of where the Rangers want to take the team. During the conference call two weeks ago,Sather made a comment about the teams remaining in the playoffs

On whether he wants his coach to have a more offensive style: “I can’t predict what the new coaches system will be like, but if you look at the teams contending for the Stanley Cup, they all have specific ingredients and I would like to take all of them and bring them into our team. There were a lot of factors that impacted how we ended up this year.â€

From that comment,Sather wants to open up and not block shots.
