Confirmed with Link: Rangers Hire Peter Laviolette as Head Coach, Assistants Michael Peca & Dan Muse

True, but I can really envision Messier being a great motivator and being able to get players to buy into a system/philosophy... whatever the f*** that might end up being. Hahahaha.
Messier is an intelligent hockey guy so I do think he may be a good coach BUT I would not want to make him a head coach until he put in some years learning the craft as an assistant and or head coach in a lower league.

I get the thought based on his reputation as a captain, but to date, he hasn't motivated himself to be a coach at any level. It's been 19 years since he last played and there's no indication that he even wants to coach. He seems pretty comfortable doing what he's doing.
Sure, I wasn't suggesting hiring him.

and that's perfectly reasonable.

By and large, and this is for MOST sports, great players make lousy head coaches.

OTOH, those guys that watch what is going on and really have to work at being decent, let alone good/great tend to be the guys that get to the HOF thru coaching.

For hockey, the 3rd/4th liners make for some very good HC's

Being a homer but this sounds like what the Carolina Panthers did. Great coaches at all levels. Love it!

So all three assistants will be on the bench? Muse, Peca and Housley?

Or is one going to be more behind the scenes, etc? And who?

This. Also have doubts about how someone whose leadership style definitely featured a very large, "get on my back while I lead by example" component adapts to coaching.

Laffy gonna be the most fire coach of the 2040's

Lavy is a more experienced coach than Quinn and I don't know if Turk tried to change Panarin's game much.

Personally, I also don't think you do try to change too much with Panarin other than get him to drive to the net more. You have to transition as a team better overall.
Panarin stirs the drink and the other players follow his style. It was evident the moment he got here how he changed them. The issue w driving the net/slot isn't ONLY panarin, it's almost team wide but I firmly believe that is from what they see their offensive leader do/not do. Hopefully lavy can reach him bc it isn't just that, it's the turnovers as well.

The players literally asked for a more hands on coach, more help, and higher intensity in their practices and preparations.

So no I don't think they're freaking out about a coach talking about the things they wanted.

The whole "lazy players" thing feels like this weird middle management opinion about "the staff" and how everyone is just lazy and doesn't do anything unless you're a huge prick to them.

e: I tend to wonder if Gallant and the Rangers "mutually parted ways" because Drury said "we're going to hire some assistant coaches who are going to run the tactics and X's and O's and you can stay as head coach to be the head motivator but these other guys are going to be running the details" and Gallant said no to that and so it was "mutual" . Though in that situation I'd tend to believe Drury knew Gallant would say no.
Not all the players asked for that. That's the thing. Don't get that confused. There are a good number that wanted the statusquo and those are the ones I am referring to.

I mentioned it during the season, but there was a rift in the room about this, certain players wanting more from teammates even if the coaching staff wasnt. Do you think the trouba incident was just bc he was pissy that week? Did the press conference that night not give everyone enough clues where he kept pausing and selecting words to not blow things up publically while stilling calling out teammates and the coaching staff? There is a rift in the room between the country club settlers and the guys who want to go to work. You can probably figure out who is who and can imagine how this may be affecting some of the younger players on the team that need direction and standards, not an in-between

it has nothing to do with his record, that team sucked. he seemed like a bumbling idiot in that road to the winter classic show. wouldn't want him anywhere near the team. looks like that ship has sailed though lmao. this team is clueless.

The head coach of the NFC representative in the Super Bowl sounded like a bumbling idiot in his opening press conference, while the guy that was one of the biggest disasters in Giants history had an amazing press conference. And those are HEAD COACHES. I don't think it's the team that's clueless.

I honestly believe the turnovers will take care of themselves if Panarin is put on a line with players who are capable of getting open in traffic (read: not Trocheck and Kravtsov!), and if the staff coaches movement away from the puck on offense in the zone with any hint of effectiveness at all.

Why can’t Panarin do this more often?
