Confirmed with Link: Rangers Hire Peter Laviolette as Head Coach, Assistants Michael Peca & Dan Muse

Housley and Hartford assistant coach Steve Smith were teammates on Calgary for three seasons in the late 90s. Smith was one of Housely’s assistants in Buffalo for a season. Have to imagine there are good lines of communication.

Also on those teams? Marc Savard.
Savard is reportedly looking for an assistant coaching job. Leafs. Flames.

Housley was absolutely awful as a head coach when he was with Buffalo, like one of the worst coaches ever. hope he doesn't get the job.

LOL. It may be apples and oranges, but Dick LeBeau was one of the worst NFL head coaches of all-time, but he's also one of the best DCs of all-time. There are plenty of examples like this. Steve Spagnuolo is another who comes to mind.

We're not hiring Housley to be the HC. We're hiring a HOF defenseman to coach our young guys. Shit, we can only hope that any of our defensemen (except Fox) has a modicum of the success that Housley had...at least in the regular season. Housley didn't do much in the Playoffs.

1. It was his first head coaching job. Something to keep in mind when people yell we need "new fresh blood".

Yep. Much like Gretzky and Trottier. Cautionary tale for those who wanted to hire Messier. Just because you're a great player doesn't mean you'll be a great head coach.

I dunno, focusing on what PH did in Buffalo (in a different role) while ignoring what he did in Nashville (in the role that he was actually hired for) seems reallllly disingenuous.

But thats just me. Some guys just aren't cut out to be the head guy and are limited to really just being good assistants.

Hell thats probably true of MOST of the head coaches in the league right now.

I know many here hate to be optimistic but I actually really like the way this staff is coming together. Peca and Muse are both young and have lots of experience working with younger players and Housley was a good assistant for Lavy in Nashville, his time in Buffalo coaching a terrible roster I don't think should hold too much water here because he's going to be an assistant.

There's a lot to like about the staff both individually and the mix of them together.

Laviolette and Drury seem to be on the same page based on these coaching hires. Faceoffs, intensity, adapting to the modern style, player development and maybe getting more offense from our talented young defense. These have all been weaknesses the past couple years and all 3 assistants seem to address at least one of these areas. I obviously try to be positive all the time but I’m pleasantly surprised

Do the Rangers have the roster for that type of style?

I think yes. The young players want to play that way. Kreider can find it again. Trouba needs to sit all 7 defenseman down and say “no one touches Igor or there’s going to be a fight”. The best goalie in the league needing to chase timo meier up ice all series should’ve been embarrassing to our captain. Loved the hit in game 7, too bad it was 4 games late.

Panarin has had his best years under coaches who don’t let him lean into his bad habits. The x-factor to me is if Laviolette can convince Zibanejad that he’s a top 10 player in the league. When Mika is feeling himself, he is a dominant player. How can we get him playing that way all the time?
