If they were 100% set on Lavi, they would NOT be wasting their time interviewing Hynes. I think we can definitively say the coaching search is not over and the media put this out there before it was fully cooked.

DRURY IS A HFNYR USER CONFIRMED

I have three names I am interested in. As far as order of preference? It's hard when there are many behind-the-scenes factors and variables taken into account that we as fans aren't privy to. What is their vision? What system and structure will they use? Those names:

Laviolette
Roy
Leach

Chris, what made John the best man for this job?

He’s my friend.

A tale as old as time in the hiring process of any job.

Peter Laviolette is the definition of luke-warm. John Hynes is poison. If you want a veteran coach, what exactly has he done to make it so that he should be hired over Laviolette? You might as well have kept Gallant and told the players to deal with it.

I swear this is 4D chess by Drury to make the Lavi hiring look better because I can't imagine he hasn't seen the fanbase's reaction across all the platforms (not just HF) about this.

Just talk Ken Hitchcock out of retirement and immediately trade anyone who has a career high of 60 points in a single NHL season or more (other than Fox, because he's a defenseman) for picks or grinders. Telling them they'l never break 60 points again while they're here should be good enough cause to get them to waive their NMCs.
The way this org. is being run, they might as well just stack bodies in front of Shesterkin and try to win the skills competition every night. The analytics of that will probably still be a slight improvement over Gallant.

All kidding aside, it kills me the way this organization is afraid of leaning into skill. They acquire it, spend huge amounts of money on it, then want it to play gritty. Then they blame skill as the reason they lose when the reason they lose is always the same - they never score enough goals. Their goals against has been fine for 18 years, yet the assembly line of coaches only talks about playing defensively.

Two things here -

1. Drury is going to hire a veteran coach, his job security depends on it. It’s also true at the same time the veteran coach we actually want isn’t currently available. Laviolette was probably going to be the hire because it seemed that no one else is available who fits that mold and Drury didn’t want to be left alone at the dance holding his wee wee forcing him to go with a first time coach (which is putting himself on the chopping block).

2. Last minute Hynes being fired allowed Drury to staal (see what I did there) and hopefully see what shakes loose with Keefe in Toronto (GM announcement), and Dubas in Pittsburgh. Maybe there’s a shot one of Keefe and Sullivan get let go and we have the better veteran coaching options all of a sudden.

That’s my hope in what he’s doing, otherwise option 2 is he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing and he’s hiring the same coach for a third time effectively condoning us to the second dark age.

I don't see the options drying up quickly. Being somewhat serious:

Hynes
Laviolette
Quenneville
Keefe (?)
Sullivan (?)
Roy
Knoblauch
Leach

Would it be THE WORST thing if Drury waited another week to two weeks and vetted guys like Roy whose team is still playing and Hynes who was just let go? It cost him no money to interview more people, especially if one of his candidates (Roy) can't even interview properly yet.

And as you mentioned, in the game of musical chairs, the music is still playing. Keefe and Sullivan are still kind of circling out there...

“People get caught up in skating speed,” MacLellan said. “But, to me, it’s the way you move the puck, the way you’re available, the way you work away from the puck—that’s how you play fast.”

Added Evgeny Kuznetsov: “That’s where the hockey goes now. It’s not about how fast you skate, it’s how fast you’re thinking, how fast you move the puck.”

Timeline-wise, Gallant was hired in mid-June. They already have their scouting staff in place for the draft, and the coach doesn’t need that much time to be brought up to speed for those plans. I agree that there’s no need to rush

Having dynamic ability definitely adds wrinkles to an attack, but there's no substitute for teamplay/puck movement as a unit.

The great news.... We're just terrible all around in that regard. Only way is up

It's shocking to people here that hockey is very interconnected, everyone has a past with everyone else and people are more inclined to hire people they know well and trust.
