Confirmed with Link: Rangers Games at Yankee Stadium (1/26 at Devils; 1/29 at Islanders)

They only did that for 2 years and those seasons actually went 84 games.

IIRC, the Rangers played a game in Halifax one of those years that started at 6 PM New York time.

And, also, IIRC, this was one of the issues in the 1994 lockout. The players HATED the two extra games.
 
I know the history of the neutral site games. ;)

The NHL put potential revenue boosts over integrity? That's not like them. :sarcasm:

Besides, the schedule being equal amongst all teams was thrown out the window by realignment anyway.

Sellout reasoning isn't why its like this at all because that wouldn't make sense. You're not taking away the Devils vs. Lightning game, you're taking away a Devils home game against the Rangers which was going to sell out anyways (along with the Rangers @ Islanders game). So you're taking one sellout away and giving them another sellout.

Home team doesn't take any money away from the day itself. They're just given X dollars that they would've made anyways if the game was at home.. otherwise every team would to host and lay claim to the 20M+ they generate that day :laugh:

Absolutely agree. Having the one game per season made it a real event and was exciting, even for non-hockey fans. Having a bunch of games every year is going to get old very quickly.

And I don't care what the reasoning is: it's a major slap in the face of Ranger fans in particular and New Yorkers in general to have the first outdoor in NYC be hosted by the New Jersey Devils. I ain't going.
 
If you guys get past your complaints, I still recommend going. Best experience I've had at a game aside from Caps game 5 last playoffs

Gonna do all that's in my power to go. I'd prefer if this was a Winter Classic so it feels more special, but these games'll just have to suffice :D
 
I just hope I get offered the chance to buy tickets for both games. Because I plan on going to both ... even though I'm not a fan of this whole thing ...
 
The NHL is just taking a page from the Mythbusters, if it's worth doing it's worth OVERDOING! Personally, I love the outdoor games and additional games will be cool, especially at Yankee Stadium. But I do worry about the additional games taking away from the specialness of the Winter Classic.

Oh yeah wouldn't surprise me either but if they go that route good luck rounding out the stadium with the other half being debbies/piles fans. Im with you, I'd like to go to both. Has anybody heard if this is just a one year thing sort of like a gratitude show from the league to us fans? If not, The WC is truly dead.
 
I guess I'm in the minority, but I think this is awesome. The winter classic is cool and all, but I can careless about seeing two teams I don't have an interest in. It's awesome that we'll be playing the Devils and Islanders in Yankee Stadium. Hopefully I can get to at least one.

Absolutely! Having a full roof over the stands is a game changer in terms of increased crowd noise....
 
While a total of 6 outdoor games is awfully high, I have to admire the chutzpah of the NHL putting the two games back to back in NYC the week of the Super Bowl. The City will be packed with media, captains of industry and people looking for a good time. It is a brilliant marketing and business move that will sell sponsorships and create exposure for the league. Much like the NHL has taken ownership of New Years Day, I expect they will now do the same with the Sunday before the Super Bowl. I don't know how many of you went to Philadelphia two years ago but that was the best sporting event I have ever attended (and that includes 6 Super Bowls, 11 MLB All Star games and countless other events) John Collins is the NHL head of marketing and he is a brilliant, brilliant man.
