Interesting.
I think Anton Stralman owes his career to Torts.
I agree. Tort's "tough love" really molded him into a much better and more consistent player.

So i watched a little more than a period and couldn't figure out what number Lindberg and Fast were. Can anyone give a little bit of a more detailed description of their play? Fast looked good on that last PP, but I still didn't get his number.
Fast was 31. He looked good. He was pretty physical and used his body to shield the puck well. I think he needs a bit more time to get stronger but his speed and puck handling ability are NHL level right now. He has an innate feel for the game which was obvious.
Lindberg wasn't overly flashy but he made quite a few small plays throughout the game. He and Fast worked well together in controlling the puck. He looked stronger than Fast.

Fast is like 165lb, he may get pushed around too much in the big league. But he is very agile, elusive and used to play in traffic so he may be able to handle it.
Thanks. Who would you compare Fast too, I read someone say a smaller Brassard. With good speed and puck handling ability, it sound like he'd a good candidate for a puck possession game. I thought his passing looked good in the few times I realized he the puck, agreed.
havent posted yet tonight..... but is the consensus McIlrath is not ready/ played a terrible game tonight?
I would say he is a little bit heavier than that now. He is agile, but over an 82 game season, it may be a bit much for right now.
If you saw Kristo play, they are similar players. Brassard is close but I think Fast has more of an all-around game in terms of puck pursuit and attempted physical play.
It's cool for the preseason, but could we please not put the results in the title of the post-game threads once the season starts?
I thought Stralman looked really good, and I was very impressed with Conor Allen. I think the Rangers may have found a really solid player in this kid. Great mobility, smart positioning, good puck movement. I'd like to see him engage his body a bit more. He doesn't need to run people over, but there were a few times where he could have shrugged a guy off the puck but instead tried to use his stick.

Something dawned on me while watching the replay this morning: Anton Stralman is fantastic. And this guy is in the bottom half of our depth chart on D? Unreal. I'm really excited to see what this defense can do with AV letting them skate. Torts has his strengths as a coach, but I don't feel his blunt style fit well with our highly skilled defense.

Yes, I mentioned this earlier. We'll put the kibosh on this once the games begin to count.
Between watching this game and the game on Monday, you can really tell who the naturally creative players are. The PP last night was infinitely better than the Monday night crew who was trying to force passes and was too slow to make decisions. Though I think Girardi has proven that he just doesn't have the mobility to be a staple on the PP. I think Staal/McDonagh, Del Zotto, Moore and Stralman should be the blue liners who get consideration for PP duty over Danny G.
Nice to see some natural chemistry forming between Zucc, Brassard and Pouliot. I hope AV keeps that group together to start the year. They compliment each other quite well. I thought Kreider would be fit there over Pouliot, but I don't see any reason to mess with it right now.

Fast looked incredibly slick and elusive. Great on the PP with the open ice, but was knocked off the puck a few times. Need to bulk him up a bit. Lindberg was solid, but not as noticeable as I'd hoped.
Talbot again looked very solid, but so did Marty. My guess is that Marty rides out the year as the backup and Talbot takes over the job next fall.
Yogan and Kantor looked hungry. Liked what I saw from both of them, but their decisions with the puck need to be quicker.
Haley is a clear upgrade over Asham, IMO. Way faster, and he hits harder. Little loose with the discipline, but as I've always said, a lineup can benefit from a bit of crazy.
Dorsett looked good. Like his speed and energy.
Syvret is smooth with the puck in the offensive zone, but is a trainwreck in his own end. Was just as much at fault for that 2nd goal as McIlrath was.
McIlrath was average. I think he made some really solid, simple plays, but he was clearly trying so hard to impress with his physical game that he made some bad mistakes. His skating looked good, but he tried to force some passes that just weren't there. Clearly needs more time, but he looks light years better than he did at his first camp.
All in all, a pretty solid showing from that group.

Maybe I am not the one to answer this, since I haven't seen the 3rd period yet, but I do not think that is the case at all.
McIlrath got caught out of position a couple of times. That catches peoples eyes.
Most of the time, McI makes the solid plays thare are expected from him. Last night was the first game of the year for everyone cept Dom Moore, and the game was quite wide open and McI mis-read plays and when he does that he cannot recover.
To make the team he gotta beat out Strålman/Moore. I don't see him doing that.
McIlrath looked like he was trying to do too much. That's okay, and with time and experience he'll get over it. I was impressed with his play in the AHL last year, and I think he'll have little problem acclimating himself to the NHL game. He just needs to play within his limits.
