Alright guys, I tried to go through all of the expansion lists and tried to pick out who Vegas would pick up based on the latest rumors and rumblings and what they would take out of common sense, and it was really ****ing hard. Regardless, their opening night line up can look something like this:

Neal-Shipchayov-R.Smith
Ryan-Eakin-Brouwer
Pouliot-Soderberg-Boedker
Calvert-Lindberg-Weise

Dadanov, Stempniak, Leipsic, McGinn, Kruger, and Dano as extras/trade bait

de Haan-Dumba
Emelin-Vatanen
Gunnarsson-Colin Miller

and you still have Koekkoek, Bogosian, Merrill, McNabb, and Sbisa as extras/trade bait.

Fleury
Mrazek
Grubauer

Either Mrazek or Grubauer likely gets flipped to a team for another draft pick.

This isn't even considering the possibility of other trades and UFA signings. I can see Radulov going to Vegas for sure.

Would Vegas dangle a piece like Dumba or de Haan for a top 6 center?

That's a pretty good defensive unit to start off with.

Ah yes. The amazing compensatory pick-rule for losing a UFA. If I remember correctly, the Rangers traded Messier's rights to San Jose for a 4th, then signed Messier as a UFA and San Jose got a 3rd from the league. It was a fantastic Lupul. Eh, I mean loophole

Most importantly, that 4th rounder became Ryan Callahan.

And we traded Callahan for (among other assets) a 2nd rounder which we included in the Yandle trade, who we then traded for a few picks. One of which we used to draft Tyler Wall.

From Messier to Wall in 4 steps.

It's actually better than trading for Vegas to avoid a certain player, it's trading to ensure Vegas takes a specific player of your own choosing. McPhee had some good comments about this yesterday at his press conference. Something to the effect of "no team has to go through this draft if they don't want to." It makes the no-movement clauses given out by our team that much worse considering we could have just bribed Vegas to take Staal or Girardi off our hands.

I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit has something worked out to steer Vegas clear of Mrazek. Anaheim too regarding Manson and Vatanen.

Vegas has the opportunity to be a heavyweight down the line if they play their cards right. The key is to not ice an entire lineup of kids ala Edmonton of a few seasons ago. That's where deals for high salary vets like Grabovski really work out in their favor.

dude owns the NHL for a few days

It's kind of fascinating, thinking about it, McPhee is auctioning all unprotected players right now to the highest bidder. Taking offers for them. Chatting shortly on the phone, just 15 minute per team, ends up being 7.5 hours in theory.

But in real life, that is not how it works. You need to set up the call. You need to consider what to talk about. He can't non stop talk trades with other GMs. To turn 10 minute of talk out of 50 minute time loss, say 20 minutes before the call and 20 minute to discuss and process the results after it, would be hard pressed. Sure he can cut that some. But basically, it will be hard to discuss deals with him now...

Most of the deals were probably agreed upon well before the protected lists were finalized so that teams could maximize their protected slots. Foley said today they've already made decisions regarding about 15 teams. Those are the teams that probably bribed Vegas to take certain players. Vegas didn't sit around waiting for the lists to be published.
