why are we throwing in a 'G' there in the Vegas abbrevation? I prefer my teams to have 3 letters :( LVK!

I prefer the abbreviations to be based on the location alone, except the NY teams for obvious reasons.

CLB (CoLumBus) instead of CBJ
LVG (Las VegaS)
CGY (CalGarY)

And people complaining about Holden being protected should realize that

a: He is still a solid 3rd pair D-man
b: He is better value than any D-man out there not protected

What does that matter? Las isn't in the name of the team.

I don't make these decisions. I think they're on an inevitable road to becoming the Las Vegas Knights, but for now, they are what they are.

Just saying there are other factors. Like Michigan / Missouri / Mississippi abbreviation or why Newark airport is EWR?

Might as well be The Mighty Golden Knights of Las Vegas

Protecting Smith's UFA rights would be dumb because Vegas can still negotiate with him starting today and up until the expansion draft. Rangers gain nothing by protecting him. Whereas if they protect Holden, they at least have a tangible player protected.

Rangers can have a handshake deal with Smith to sign after the expansion draft, if he's taken or not.

I'm almost positive that you can't protect a UFA.

there is no rule against protecting a pending ufa. it just makes zero sense to do so and would be a waste of a protection slot since even if vegas takes them you can just sign them back later

Which is literally what happened when the Predators took Mike Richter from the Rangers in their expansion draft.

The only reason you would protect a UFA is if you intended to resign him, were worried Vegas would sign him first, and had an available slot you didn't need for an equally important player. The first and third criteria do fit the Rangers and Smith. The second one is a question mark.

But back then teams with UFAs who signed elsewhere on July 1 were given draft pick compensation. Nashville received a 2nd round pick from the league when Richter re-signed with the Rangers.

Only reason VGK would take any UFAs this go around would be if they have a contract hammered out before Wednesday. I'd be shocked if this happens though but hey I hope they reach an agreement with Smith and Grabner/Fast/Lindberg/Raanta stay :)

Ah yes. The amazing compensatory pick-rule for losing a UFA. If I remember correctly, the Rangers traded Messier's rights to San Jose for a 4th, then signed Messier as a UFA and San Jose got a 3rd from the league. It was a fantastic Lupul. Eh, I mean loophole

I wonder how we'll get all the behind the scenes trades between LVK and 30 teams. The 30 selections doesn't tell the story at all. I don't think they're going to run them down at the award so it's probably going to be just reading tweets left and right. It'd be nice if they could prepare a list of all the trades they made and the conditions attached and release. I mean, the teams will have to tweet the trades sooner or later to account for the missing picks or players.

Alright guys, I tried to go through all of the expansion lists and tried to pick out who Vegas would pick up based on the latest rumors and rumblings and what they would take out of common sense, and it was really ****ing hard. Regardless, their opening night line up can look something like this:

Neal-Shipchayov-R.Smith
Ryan-Eakin-Brouwer
Pouliot-Soderberg-Boedker
Calvert-Lindberg-Weise

Dadanov, Stempniak, Leipsic, McGinn, Kruger, and Dano as extras/trade bait

de Haan-Dumba
Emelin-Vatanen
Gunnarsson-Colin Miller

and you still have Koekkoek, Bogosian, Merrill, McNabb, and Sbisa as extras/trade bait.

Fleury
Mrazek
Grubauer

Either Mrazek or Grubauer likely gets flipped to a team for another draft pick.

This isn't even considering the possibility of other trades and UFA signings. I can see Radulov going to Vegas for sure.

Would Vegas dangle a piece like Dumba or de Haan for a top 6 center?

No way Vegas could pass on Clendening!!!

Hehe, if some people at this place were GMs they would be all over him... ;) Seriously though, they should get a good team.

I personally think that a team like this would be a nightmare to play against:
Neal-Shipashov-Perron
Hagelin-Soderberg-Pouliot
Eakin-Kreuger-Marschesault
Sheahan-Lindberg-Karlsson
De Haan-Dumba
Methot-Vatanen (?)
McQuaid-Bogosian

Very deep with competent players. Definitely think it would make the POs. Perfectly solid blueline.
