Confirmed with Link: NYR/VGK: Reilly Smith (50% Retained) for Brendan Brisson and SJS's 2025 3rd Round Pick

I like the overall direction of the team’s moves this season, which I seldom say.

This team usually operates in a planless vacuum. Notably at the deadline, with moves that don’t push the needle much but do hurt long-term. This season’s moves look more big-picture and long-range focused, which is not very NYR-like.

I know some folks dislike certain moves. But overall, they’ve brought in a 1C, shored up the D, gotten rid of the people they were supposed to, did not sign any 300-year-old rentals, brought in no-risk former first-round reclamation guys, and replenished draft picks.

It could be a lot worse.

Like unless 2025 is some uber deep draft where the you can get a good player in the 3rd round, the 2nd round pick is objectively better lol

On prosport draft charts current picks usually have a premium over future picks but I do not know the formula.

The second is San Jose's so that is almost a 2nd round pick plus we got a guy that may or may not pan out. I think it was a pretty fair return.
 
So Brisson last year had 8 points in 15 games playing about 12 minutes a game. As a 22 year old, if you finish the prior season playing that much and have pretty good stats like he did, you’re likely to believe you deserve a shot in the NHL the following year. Imagine if Othmann played 15 games and had 8 points and then coming in to training camp the following season and not being on the NHL roster.

Brisson probably was not enamored with not being provided with an opportunity. It appears, based on his stats, that he may have been sulking a bit in the AHL and I’m sure he’s ready for a change.

Was he at wing or center for Vegas

Just as a VGK season ticket holder and I've seen him in Henderson, I won't comment on who won the trade, but I will say Brisson has been unimpressive even in Henderson, not to mention the games at the start of the year with the VGK. He's small, doesn't do much except for having a nice shot and I don't want to eat my words but he's likely only a fringe NHLer at best. I think we drafted him thinking he'd eventually replace Marchessault but he isn't likely to ever be that.

Thanks for the feedback. I used to go to Wranglers games when I lived there before there was a VGK team and I enjoyed the fans. I can remember nights when the ECHL Wranglers were putting more people in the seats than the pre-Crosby Pens.

I don't think the Rangers needed to win the trade per se. Smith will be 34 in less than a month and was not going to be re-signed here. He wasn't going to bring a notable return, but moving him was the right call. If he is a fit there this season, and possibly beyond, then it's likely just a scenario where both teams got what they wanted.
