Really really hope they don't take Lindberg :shakehead

Left Smith unprotected because he's not a signed player? Or as leverage to get him to sign?

I mean. Holden to LVK wouldn't be a negative for us.

Protecting Smith's UFA rights would be dumb because Vegas can still negotiate with him starting today and up until the expansion draft. Rangers gain nothing by protecting him. Whereas if they protect Holden, they at least have a tangible player protected.

Rangers can have a handshake deal with Smith to sign after the expansion draft, if he's taken or not.

I'd rather protect Kampfer before Holden...at least Holden would be another option to consider for Vegas (well no...no way in hell they picked him , but maybe we could have made a trade for them not to pick Lindberg/Fast/Raanta)

Vegas would not have been able to negotiate with him if the Rangers protected him.

I'm guessing we lose Lindberg, Grabner, or Raanta.

Lindberg is better than Fast, and a C/W.

Grabner, could see us losing if LVGK plans to trot him out there for 60 games, hope he pots 15 goals, and swings him at the deadline for a 1st as a rental.

Raanta if they have a deal set up with another team to select him and flip him. I don't see any scenario where LVGK doesn't start the season with a tandem of MAF/Mrazek.

VGK would not have been able to talk to Smith if he was protected until July1 when the contract expires

Still would have been dumb to protect him as we probably don't resign him.

Raanta or Lindberg gone

Protecting Holden is an interesting decision, though unsurprising given the other defensive options.

It's really too bad we couldn't reach an agreement to get a better 3rd defenseman in exchange for Antti Raanta.

Really not interesting though

Smith pending UFA whose all but gone
Girardi pending ufa bought out and gone
Klein rumored to considering retirement

Clendenning, kampfer etc are fringe NHLers

Did any other NHL team exposed a more valuable option in order to "hedge a bet against losing another exposed player" (I don't know how else to call this planning)? I mean it certainly makes sense but looking at barely any trades to address coming losses due to the expansion (in certain situations very significant losses), I think teams decided to let it roll and deal with losses via UFA market or trades with other teams AFTER the draft when there's definitely more certainty.

It does make you wonder whether Holden is in the teams plans for 2017-2018. I've seen a lot of projected lineups with him as the #7, few if any as a third pairing guy.

Could be

a) He is seen as a 3rd pairing or #7 option for the next season, in case Bereglazov struggles.
b) They plan to include him in a trade and capitalize on his increased value
c) He is being kept around as insurance in case Smith doesn't sign

Still, what Holden does for the price tag is a pretty good deal.

why are we throwing in a 'G' there in the Vegas abbrevation? I prefer my teams to have 3 letters :( LVK!

If Grabner has any term on his deal remaining he should be the pick .
Great penalty killer .i know he scores goals too but for me his goal, scoring is not a given.
But great on the PK

It will be very interesting to see what will be LV main strategy in the draft. We are afraid that they will be picking young players but I think they will be looking to BPA that via trade can bring them more prospects that will be making an impact in 2-3 years. Like what's better: get Lindberg or Fast who still likely be a 3-4 liners if you keeep them or Graber who, if he will again be scoring in bunches, could bring a future top6 prospect or a pick who could turn into one from a contender at a trade deadline?

What is easier to associate - VG in VGK or LV in LVGK - with Vegas?

What does that matter? Las isn't in the name of the team.

I don't make these decisions. I think they're on an inevitable road to becoming the Las Vegas Knights, but for now, they are what they are.

d) All of the above

So Vegas can start picking guys from teams and making trades now, and this all gets announced at the NHL Awards on Wednesday?
