Post-Game Talk: Rangers @ Devils | 2/5/13 | 6 Goalie System Brah!

Your special teams stats look pretty bad. No powerplay that has Brad Richards should be 30th. Is he not the PP QB? I thought thats his speciality.

But why the PK too? 18th in NHL but at 78%

As an outsider, I thought you guys would be doing better than this.

Oh well, it makes you feel empathy for Leafs fans.

Was just browsing through this thread. But yeah, quite true.

Sullivan (assistant coach) can't run a Powerplay for life

I wonder if the Rangers can win their next 5 games but not score on the power play and allow 6-7 power play goals.

I think that would be enough to get Sully the pink card.

So we are to conclude that, between the ECF and now somehow Gaborik has had all the effort sucked out of him. Coincidentally at a time when our team is in a poor run of form?

This logic is suspect. My theory happens to be that people like to complain when things aren't going great.

i really dont think the problem is gaborik, i think its the secondary scoring which is non existent. gabby didnt put up a point in the win over toronto and only have 3 shots but nobody noticed because we were getting scoring from elsewhere, and winning, when hes on hes a game changer, like in boston, but when hes not other guys need to step up and score they cant all sit around and wait for gaborik to take over a game because its not going to happen on a nighty basis, just like how other teams top scorers dont have great performances night in and night out.

finally got around to watching the pregame, kinda confused with some things torts said "weve got some guys that are tentative" and "we dont play careful hockey" which is funny since ever since hes gotten here everyone has played knowing the leash is about as short as my pinkey finger and the non existant creativity would lead me to believe that everyone is playing careful hockey knowing if a blind pass is picked off or cross ice pass goes the other way your most likely going to get ripped a new one and possibly not see much ice in the imminent future. call me crazy but what hes been saying and how guys are playing is kind of hypocritical, and fwiw im not trying to rip torts i like him as a coach and like whats hes done here.

Well, it would appear that Nash-Richards-Gaborik are going to get top line minutes no matter how they play, and they've been making a ton of blind passes that have been picked off and they're still not showing consistent confidence and creativity. So, those guys specifically are playing tentative and aren't play carefully IMO, and Torts isn't keeping them on some tight leash minute wise at all.

The team is having trouble establishing confidence every single game and they're spinning their wheels because of the odd start to the season with a short, modified camp, no preseason time to play meaningless games and tinker, etc. I don't think they are deathly afraid of their coach at all. They aren't clicking and they know it and it's frustrating for everyone.

No one is saying all the effort has been sucked out of him. What most are saying is that he doesn't give that same effort every night. Richards - for good and bad - was noticeable. Nash the same thing.

Gaborik? I'm sorry, he wasn't out hustling for loose pucks, I was quite surprised he had 5 SOG in this game (Probably half-assed wristers), I mean, again, invisible.

I don't have a problem with Gaborik. When he's off, he is invisible, but he's on enough and he puts in the effort, even when he's off. He's just not a noticeable player until he pops on the radar out of nowhere and makes a nifty play. It doesn't mean he's not working. That's just his game. I don't have a problem with Nash. He's not finishing but he is creating chances, which is more than can be said of most of our guys. I don't have a problem with Boyle or Pyatt or Halpern or Asham. I'm willing to be patient with growing pains from Kreider and Hagelin and even Stepan. I'm fine with Stralman and Staal and Girardi and McDonagh. I think Hank is not playing like himself. I've always thought MDZ has rocks for brains and I think Richards is playing like dung. And we need a #6 d-man that Torts trusts.

I hope, At least he doesn't put someone like Mike ****ing Kostka (or Costco, as Leafs fans now call him) as PP QB on both PP units.

Only because Kostka is not a Ranger. Believe me, it would be explored. Myself, I kind of don't really believe as much as some in that whole PP quarterback thing. I think a decent powerplay (even middle of the pack would an improvement of gargantuan proportions) involves just a few ingredients, but all players need to be moving and 'freelancing'. Yep, that's what is missing with NYR. Nash has it, not many others. I don't mean puckhogging, quite the opposite. I mean moving freely and trusting in the talents that got you to the NHL, and on a powerplay to start with.

I loved Gomez after his 70 point season. His 58 point season the year following not so much but he still wasn't as bad as a Ranger as he was made out to be.

That trade mostly got funny way after the fact when Gomez proceeded to have a 38 point season followed by a 2 goal season.

There's no proof O'Reilly can produce at a Richards level and even less for Jankowski. Really??? Jankowski???? Kid hasn't played a game. An argument can be made for O'Reilly but you really lost me with Jankowski.

Yes but speaking strictly numbers, Scott Gomez has a higher PPG wearing Ranger silks than Brad Richards does thus far. Everyone says Gomez's tenure here was a disaster and rightfully so, he was a very enigmatic predictable player that had many invisible nights on the ice. I am seeing many similarities between the two on the ice and looking away at stats for a moment. Richards has no dominating shifts like he did with Dallas the previous years and he is a very predictable player on the PP. Simply not creative enough to turnaround a team's offense, despite being spoonfed with offensive zone time. Richards on this roster is by far being put in a position to succeed, IMO more-so than any other center in the league when factoring in most frequent linemates on offense (Nash, Gaborik) and on defense (Staal, Del Zotto). His production and on-ice play has been inexcusable. He's made some nice nifty passes, but nothing about him seems dominant.

What I meant about trading Richards is to find a team dumb enough to actually give up value in return for him. His contract is an albatross, but I think some team will feel pressured to try to make a playoff run this year. Trading him for picks/prospects allows the gates to be open in acquiring O'Reilly. O'Reilly will not produce as much offensively, but will probably bring a better overall game to the lineup.

Lol seriously, take out their shootout wins and they miss the playoffs completely. They play a good team game.

Miller was our best player tonight, pretty unbelievable. Him and Kreider had some good chemistry there on the PP. Give them all the time!!
Take away everyones shootout points and they still make it in easily.:shakehead You guys are so funny thats why I love lurking.

Miller and Kreider will wreak havoc on the Devils for quite a while, they have IT. Especially Kreider, he has a quick release. I didnt even see the puck go in at the game. On a side note for some reason Aaron Asham always plays good against the Devils, for whatever reason Devils have a hard time taking the puck away form him. He was good on the boards tonight but useless everywhere else. He's a good player to have on the 4th line but not as a 3rd liner.

Just like your board will be funny to read in a couple of years when Brodeur is gone and Kovalchuk starts to decline. Enjoy it while you can!

Oh calm yourself I said I was over-exaggerating.

We never miss a beat. But yes I will enjoy it either way. ;)

Good to see hockey fans from Ocean County who are not Flyer fans. :D We seem to be the cutoff point before Flyer territory.

Torts: "Hey JT, can i have a word with you?"

Miller: "Sure coach, what's up?"

Torts: "Well, I was watching you play out there and I wanted to know, what was that strange dump play you made from behind the net? The one to Richie?"

Miller: "The pass?"

Torts: "The what?"

Miller: "The pass I made? The centering pass."

Torts: "Well what about the dump you made skating into the zone, it looked like you were dumping it but it went to Hagelin's stick instead and he had an opportunity to score? What's that about? Magic? A new kind of dump?"

Miller: "That was a break out pass coach..."

Torts: "A dump?"

Miller: "A pass."

Torts: "A what?"

Oh we enjoy every second of it, but I don't believe NJ will be horrible once Marty is gone... and who is to say Kovalchuk will start declining?

And instead of mentioning us enjoying our time with Marty, maybe you guys should try and enjoy your time with Mr "King" in net, because if he doesn't win soon...

Who knows.

And on a side note, Kreider's goal was nice.

Uhhh...

Gaborik had 2g 2a against the Leafs.

The Devil's don't have bad goaltending depth. But none of those prospects are Brodeur. I really don't like Marty but he stood on his head tonight. He made so many game breaking saves tonight. The Rangers could have easily had that game tonight. Marty playing that well keeps the morale up for his teammates, they keep pushing and got some nice breaks on bad turnovers by the rangers.

I don't see Kovalchuk declining anytime soon.

And yes Kreider's goal was very nice.

Pretty much. Richards, Gaborik, and Nash are here to score. I don't care what they do besides that. They can eat puppies for all I care.

This is EXACTLY the attitude and perspective that has killed this team over the years and led to the absolutely awful Rangers teams we saw from ~'97-'04.

If all you care about are the stats and the goal/assist production, you're going to get burned. Hate to break it to you, but hockey is about much much more than simply point production. Would you still be happy with those players if they gave up 2 goals for every 1 goal they produced? Because guess what - thats exactly what the lines Brad Richards was on tonight did (1 assist for BR, but +/- of -1, meaning he was out there for 2 goals against).

Look at virtually any stanley cup championship team (including the '94 Rangers) and even the "producers," as you put it, contribute more to the team than just tallying up the points. I watched Richards in the game against Tampa on Saturday in 3 separate back checking situations (I'm sure there were more like this, but it seemed like it was 3 shifts in a row that he did it and it stuck out in my mind for that reason) in which he was the only forward near an odd man rush that could have picked up the extra man to even it out, and instead of hustling back he stopped skating, glided, and let his man go. I get that Richards is not known for his defensive prowess, but sorry... that is inexcusable, shows no heart, and is not how you win championships. Not to mention what has already been said with his failure to bring a consistent offensive threat/effort/actually execute more than a few crisp passes each game.

This is perhaps the most frustrating part about being a Rangers fan, and I don't know if its because they're a big market team and they feel like they need to get the big name stars to satiate the fans, or what it is... but over the years their management has completely ignored team chemistry (both in their own team, the Rangers, and in the sense that tbe chemistry of the lines may have contributed to the picked up players' success on their previous team) at the expense of looking for the next shiny object player and going after them at all costs. Mind you, I'm a fan of Nash despite his fail tonight and his weak goal production so far -- so I'm not really ragging on that deal, but I do recognize that while we gained a piece that was missing, we lost a BIG part of our identity and cohesion as a team with that trade (not to mention the loss of Pruster and Feds). I'm just not convinced that management really recognized how much of a loss those guys were going to be and how difficult it would be to replace them team chemistry wise.

All of that said, I don't come down nearly as extreme on the scale as some on the other side of this who are advocating trading/buying out Richards, but if you don't honestly believe that Richards has, overall, been playing like complete dog poo, I don't know what games you've been watching. I'm not saying others haven't played poorly -- but for his salary, his 'A', and the leadership that the younger guys inevitably expect from him, he needs to step it up.

Last years' team, while at times was lacking, had many of the various components, the heart, the work ethic, and the chemistry to be in contention for a championship. At least so far into this season, not seeing ANY of those things in this years' team. There have been some glimmers of effort, heart, and skill though this year -- so I'm still holding out hope that its just taking them all a while to gel and develop the chemistry to become a truly great team.

Just did a quick look back on games where we were scored against first and lost versus games where we were scored against first and won. Might be +/- 1 or 2 for each side but the results are telling. Going back through this season + playoffs + last season, the Rangers are 17-39 when scored against first. Essentially they are losing 70% of the games where they get scored against first. That is not good. At all.

And thank god for that! I hate everything about Philly and the part of the state that aligns with that area! Poor NJ is stuck in between two loud mouthed sport cities though so I can empathize with Devil fans when it comes to the other two fanbases.
