The Rangers are looking to make noise this season.

Buying out Shatty allows them to keep their forwards and frees up 1st and 2nd RD for the better players in Trouba and DeAngelo.

The dead money hurts next year, but we have deals coming off the books that will allow them to absorb the impact

I was opposed to this at first, but came around over the past few days. Helpful for this year. Next year it's basically like having him here, except he's replaced by someone on an ELC or a cheap veteran. Then that's basically it. I'm okay with it.

I was hoping for no buyouts at all, but of the trade market didn't develop for Namestnikov, Smith, and Shattenkirk, then then a buyout is what it comes to.

Again, not ideal, but it's fine. I don't think any of the other guys made any more sense for buyouts, and I wasn't on board with attaching assets to guys just to make them disappear. This build isn't over, so that was a nonstarter.

Actually, what if this was going to be like the move that Washington pulled with Brooks Orpik, where they sent him to Colorado, who bought him out, then brought him back at league minimum? If Gorton pulls this off he's a God.
