Good. Preseason is nearly useless for guys not fighting to make the team. The vets will play more when there are further cuts. GG needs to take every minute he can to evaluate Rydahl, Kravtsov, Jones, Robertson, etc.

So if Blais, Goodrow, Panarin are skating with group A and Kravtsov, Rydahl, and Trivigno are not, should we assume those three play again? Or maybe we see select guys from group 3 like Edstrom, Pajuniemi, or Henriksson.

It is early. No one really played badly for us last night but that wasn't a strong group for the Islanders either. Kravtsov was pretty good but he needs to build a bit more on what he did off last night. For one thing it looks like Othmann is determined to push him which is good too. It shouldn't be easy for Vitali to make the team. Brennan was the better player of the two last night. That play on the shorthanded goal was outstanding. As well Brennan showed he knows how to set up in really good spots and his release is outstanding. Brennan reminded me of Steve Larmer a bit. Larmer also was not the best skater but he was a whale of a player. A really sharp all situations player who scored a lot of goals---like over 400 if I remember right. A clutch player as well. An always focused player who for the the '94 and '95 Rangers teams probably broke up and or turned over more pucks in the neutral zone than any of our other forwards from those days including all the HOF'ers. Othmann's game is very typical of the type of game I use to see regularly from Canadians coming out of the CHL in the 80's and 90's---a no bullshit take no prisoners, do whatever's necessary mentality that pretty much has gone missing these days. Combine that with his shot and release and that's an intriguing combination.

Kravtsov needs to be 10 times hard on the puck. Too many soft, hopeful plays. Unless he improves in this department, he will be back in Hartford by November. Will he really flee to Russia with what's going on over there?

Im ready for Robertson

Gauthier-Blais-Laf, French Connection, make it happen at least once in the preseason games

I'm glad VK is back in and Panarin is out. I'd rather keep as much of the core as possible out of games this week. Let the guys fighting for roles get some ice. Road preseason games are actually way more valuable than home games. The only reason we play more stars at home is about the fans and gate. Sure, they help get those guys into game shape and maybe it helps them build chemistry with new linemates, but we don't really learn that much about them that we didn't already know.

Right now is the time to know more about the unknown quantities on the roster. All the known quantities, they probably see 2 of these preseason games. The rest is going to be evaluating the young guys (Othmann, Cuylle) or the new roster guys (e.g., Carpenter, Kravtsov). Vesey is a special case. A veteran without a roster spot locked; he'll probably see two more games.

Why did they lock the last night's postgame thread so early?

Anyway, It's never easy to play the Isles, even in preseason. They play that trap style clogging the neutral zone, so there is a lot of dump and chase. Not much skating it into the zone. That said we defended well and got the win.

I'm glad most here agree Zac Jones had a good game. I thought he shoulda been with the team last year. He is kinda small but dynamic. I hope he stays with the team this year.

Miller looks like he should have a breakout season. We didn't see his point shot last night, but heard he worked on it. That and his stamina. He looked really good last night.

I always liked Jimmy Vesey. I hope he makes it.

VK needs to show something more than he did last night. The clock is ticking.

Tonight game should be less choppy, more skating on display. Marchand is out which is always a good thing.

You wonder if Rydahl becomes the first callup just by virtue of him being waiver exempt- NYR wait for an injury rather than risk losing Carpenter or Hunt. Not saying that's how the decision should be made but it wouldn't be the first time.

Does Halak start tonight? I would think he would vs his old team.

Losing Carpenter or Hunt would not hurt us. I rather keep Rydahl up if he proves he can play in the NHL. had a good game last night. Kravtsov has to go through waivers right?
