There’s no doubt he was a warrior, and I respect him. But he bled shots/shot attempts and wasn’t good offensively. I say his bad years cancelled out any good he ever did. But I will admit that I may have been wrong about him not being an impact player.

I don't mean to pick on you but I've been watching the Rangers since 1971-72. That's more than half of the team's history. I saw all of Girardi's career with the Rangers and the issue is sometimes when you don't see it all you don't get really the right perspective. I loved Dan Girardi not so much for his last few years but for the entirety of his career with us. He had a lot of good years even had a bunch of bad moments even in those good years. That happens--no player is perfect but his was always a blue collarish kind of job---a lot of the dirty stuff that doesn't get a player lots of glory but are absolutely essential to a team doing well. He won no Cups so in that sense he failed but it's the same failure as a lot of other guys some of whom are great players too. We had some really good runs with him though. He was an honest player and yeah Lindgren now in some respects is a bit like him.

I like the concept of this signing.

There is a shift in how depth lines and grinders are built around the league. I like Karson Kuhlman in Boston a lot. And kids like him are popping up all over. Strong on the puck. Great at taking away ice without it. Smaller stockier forwards. High intensity players, but definitely not without skill. It’s just as important to be able to be strong on the puck, to be able to turn away from defenders and protect it as well as move it in high pressure situations as it is to win pucks when you don’t have it.

When these guys do come out of college as undrafted and make it in the NHL it’s often because there is a change in what people are looking for. Like the last years Ds are let loose a lot more and guys like Pionk and Stetcher in Vancouver pops up and does fairly well in the NHL. Ppl hate on Pionk, but he is on pace this season to score more pts than Kreider ever have in the NHL. He isn’t totally useless.

I think he is a great add. I also think that we need a little generation shift in HFD. This kid can definitely come in and replace guys like Vinnie L and co long-term. That is valuable too. I like it.

Agreed. Finding young forwards that can take away time and space and punish opposition is invaluable in today's NHL.

I was at the Kings/Wild game this weekend. Sat about 15 rows from the ice. Normally I sit much further away. The thing that stands out from a closer vantage point is just how much of the game is a bit too fast or too clogged to make legit hockey plays.

So much of the game is about chipping the puck to areas where there should be a teammate waiting. It's not actually about having the time and space to make a skilled read. The game is just too fast and the bodies are too big.

This is, in part, why rookies have such a hard time adjusting to the NHL game. They literally have to learn how to take creativity out of their games. And that's because teams have a mixture of elite talent combined with other players who rely on speed, size and reach. And there's just very little room.

From close up it feels like most of the guys in the NHL look like they're playing a video game that's a level too hard for them. And what makes STL and Boston so strong is that are all 4 lines can limit time and space. Everyone talks about the NHL game being exhausting from a physical standpoint and it is, but it's also the speed of the game and how that takes a mental toll as well.

So, in any case, this is why adding players like Gauthier, Barron and Khodorenko are so valuable. The more kids like this you have in your system and on your team, the more each piece becomes more valuable because as a collective they begin to have an accumulative effect on opposition.

I want to create another account just to Like this more than once.

Also good points. You’re a very respectable poster imo so I’ll take you at your word.

The second option sounds like me. I’m 23 and I’ve been a fan all my life, but I took a break watching the Rangers for a few years due to social stuff. Before that, I would watch the games, but I don’t remember much. I went back to watching games consistently in 2014 and got really into hockey in 2016 or 2017.
So you were 10 when Girardi broke into the NHL?

He and Staal and then he and McDonagh were a tough pairing to play against. A lot of those years the Rangers offense was kind of mediocre and we still did well. Henrik had a very large part in that too.

Yes - and I said so at the time, but Staal is the guy we should've bought out and Girardi would've been a serviceable 3rd pair nuts and bolts leader guy. 2011-12 he was a freaking monster out there.

And - he would've been retired already.

And, how did this happen in a Khodorenko thread?

I kind of agree with this but Staal was kind of a monster before his brother concussed him and afterwards Voracek deflected that shot that caved in the one side of his head. He was like a reincarnation of Rod Langway--arguably the best defensive defenseman in the league. Those two head injuries surely f***ed his career up--that he came back from them both and is still playing is a testament to his fortitude. I mean I'm ready to buy him out as soon as possible but IMO he's more than earned respect. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a whole lot of eyesight in the one eye--Hedberg lost an eye I think in his last season and I think Tkachuk did too. That's a real sacrifice.

I know I’m probably missing a lot more. Very small chance you get an impact player. Gilroy I don’t remember very well. Girardi was not great for most of his career. Pionk wasn’t great here according to many, and is in the best possible spot in Winnipeg, so we’ll see if he is truly an impact player. Zuccarello yea he was great for us.
Dude are you 12? Girardi was a great shutdown stay at home defenseman for at least half his time on the Rangers. He fell off a cliff towards the end from having his body destroyed under Tortorella. He was a great Ranger all things considered, especially being an udfa. Don't disrespect him like that.
