People will complain that Laine has defensive weakness and not always commit at 100%. Are the same people will complain about Montreal score no goals. I know it's fun to have a player like suzuki. All around. Good physicality, Good defensively, good offensively, good leadership. But those guys are rare. Laine remains a top 6 player. It always depend how he is going to ask as money. I would sign him every day. I liked Micheal Ryder aNd Kovalev back in the days. Even if some night they were not playing at all.

I still want Laine to be better than Ryder and Hoffman, as Kovalev was.

He's got to take certain aspects of his game to another level, including his fitness and intensity.

But because the talent is clearly there, I'm rooting for him, and don't want to get rid of him. Want him, and Dach to have intense offseasons of training. And then see how they are midseason next season.

The problem with Laine is that he drags his linemates down.

8-)

He was energized by his new center and covered when he was braindead defensively.
Sorry man but no. Maybe Laine is improving as Dach did, and that would be great.

But he’s flat out sucked so far at 5 on 5 and that wasn’t the fault of Dach. Again, Dach and Newhook are five points better without him.

If he’s bouncing back from his injury- as Dach did - that’s great. But don’t try to re-write history.

Laine and Newhook get separated from Dach:
-> Laine and Newhool play a good game.

Especially Laine seems to benefit in a huge way to play with another center than Dach. Great stuff!

Its so obvious that you love your boy Dach and hate Laine. No matter how they play. You repeat the same arguments and stats again and again and again to try to make everyone believe you. No offence but your comments are starting to weigh less and less, due to your very clear bias with these guys.

Newhook is five points better without Laine?

Are you talking about the small sample size since they were separated or the entire season before and after Laine joined their line?

Kirby Dach isn’t the reason Laine would skate around only to lose the puck. Dach wasn’t the reason Laine had problems making passes and killed plays.

Laine’s timing has been off. Just like Dach’s was. It happens with a lot of players after some time off. And it will improve for him just like it did for Dach.

Don’t use Dach as a scapegoat for Laine. It’s a bogus argument that’s easily refuted.

Stop pitting player against player.

Dach was dreadful to start the year. Worst in league numbers. Couldn’t make a play and lost the puck a lot. Same thing with Laine.

Dach improved and Laine should as well. Last night was a good sign for him. Yeah, two points were on the PP but he actually had a few chances at 5 on 5. That’s progress.

Btw, he’s been back for a couple of months now. That’s around the same time Dach started to find his game.

I’m saying that since December, when you look at Dach and Newhook together without Laine, their possession numbers go up significantly.

Before that both are dreadfull, but that’s Dach’s fault not Newhook’s.

I was yanking your chain, LG, but I don't think it is rewriting history to say that Dach was not good without the puck, certainly not good enough to center the second line. This is not a great team by any means, but he is a shoe-in to claim the green jacket for this club, way ahead of anyone else on the roster. His line is a combined -53, and unless they got the bulk of defensive zone starts, it is inexcusable.

It’s excusable when you’re coming back from a devastating injury. Dude was terribad, no doubt about it.

And that’s why I gave Laine a mulligan this season. I expect he’ll improve down the stretch and next year we’ll get to see his real game.

We need a better option as a second line center moving forward and you might not agree with me which is fine.

I'm beginning to wonder if Laine will ever be able to cut down on the turnovers. The thing is, I want him to play theough his mistakes amd see if he can't come out on the other side being able to create more offense.

Whereas with Newhook, I see a ton of turnovers when we have possession in the offensive zone. So I see him as mainly a bottom six counter striker who needs to simplify his game on the offensive zone to avoid the turnovers. Maybe just turn amd throw it on net when in doubt.

I don’t think we need a better option. But I do think we need a second option.

I have a much higher opinion of Dach’s potential than you do but his health is a big question mark. And even if he was 100 percent healthy an injury can happen at any time. We need more depth at center.
