Here's a tip...even in this advanced age, defensemen still take time. With forwards, you usually have a pretty good idea what you have by the age of 22. Not so with defensemen.

Trouba at 25 is just likely coming into his peak. There are many around the league who apprentice in the AHL for several years and then work their way up a team's food chain. It's going to take time for some of these young guys and I for one am not sure who will eventually rise to the top.

Look at ADA. A year ago he had bust written all over. Three teams by age 21. Now he has a chance for a long and successful career (if he cleans up his work in the defensive end) A year can change a lot.

I really like the idea of having too many defensemen. It creates competition. These guys want to see the ice. Work for it.
And even if they don't wind up part of your top 6, they become assets.

I wonder if the apparent volatility of this years 1st round worked in the Rangers favor.

Winnipeg might think they can a serious player/faller at #20.

But he beat up Trouba.

Well they were both bloodied but yeah he kind of did. I'm kind of expecting Bennett to start producing more but he is legitimately tough for his size and not afraid of anybody and he works hard and his teammates and even Calgary fans even like him despite the fact he's never produced the way they expected. Not a fun guy to play against which is one of the big reasons I like Lemieux. I'd like the Rangers to build a team that other teams don't like playing against. Lemieux and Trouba help get us there--DeAngelo more for his yapping and that he can fight pretty well for his size is another. Quinn seems to want the team to go in that direction too.

I'm having a hard time imagining Shattenkirk getting traded. Unless I hear something new, I have to assume that the story about Shatty at 50% retained garnering no interesting is still valid. I want to believe Colorado would take him back since he played well there but not holding my breadth. I also don't see Gorton burying Shatty in Hartford.

That leaves on the right:
Trouba
ADA
Shatty

Fox will benefit from 1/2+ a season in HFD. Or however long it takes to resolve our RD logjam. Ideally Shatty starts to play well and we can TDL him. Fox comes up for the rest of the season and plays less than 30 games.

Also think they had/have guys on their radar they really liked there, not all that different than why the Rangers are exploring ways to get one of the players they really liked when they thought they might be picking 6th.

Shatty as a 3RD, behind Trouba and ADA. I don't see it as that bad. Minutes would be sheltered. He has a NMC for TDL move.

I think being traded could really help push Troubda to the next level.

This is what he’s wanted for two and a half years. He’s finally out of Buff’s shadow, and will have a chance to be the #1 defenseman on the Rangers moving forward.

I already can’t wait for October, and we’ll probably make at least 1 or 2 more big splashes as well.

I think Trouba is a bit overrated, but that trade is an absolute steal that you obviously do every single time. Just from an asset standpoint it's already a huge win.

For #20 and Pionk?? Good job Gorton!
So happy it was Pionk and not ADA going the other way.

And as somobody pointed out; if we cant resign him he should bring back a first and a prospect/nice young player at the deadline. Something similar as the Hayes return.

Ok so I gotta ask guys like @Edge @bobbop @Amazing Kreiderman @RangerBoy what are the odds that Trouba signs long term here? I have a buddy of mine in Michigan and he keeps fighting with me all day saying he has inside info that Trouba will only sign with Detroit and he’s coming home. This guy also told me way before that Stevie Y was coming home as well. I’ve been arguing all day with him about the likelihood of Trouba signing long term here. Help a brotha out.

I doubt Gorton makes the trade if he thought that Trouba wouldn’t re-sign.

If Shattenkirk isn't dealt soon, Smith is a buyout before the 1st window closes. +Fox +Trouba, more of Hajek and ADA will be good. Best part of an overload of options on defense is we won't be trading a 4th and a 6th for a soon to be retired vet.

The Rangers seem confident they can/will sign Trouba. I don't know what specific indications that's based upon, but it doesn't seem to be a worry. Frankly, I think this is one of the places he wants to be.

Of course the devil is in the details and a contract must still be worked out. But I also have no doubt that if things went off the rails, Gorton would not hesitate to flip him down the line.

I still don't understand why WPG didn't allow teams to talk to the agent re extension. That would have upped the value. Is there a red flag there? Or at least an explanation?
