i may be moving to charlotte next month. any advice?

Really do your research on the neighborhood before you commit to living there. Charlotte's got some great neighborhoods in terms of hip-urban and upscale-suburban. It also has some really shitty areas in terms of "Wow this is way more ghetto than it looked in the brochure" and "the most exciting thing in my zip code is an Arbys". It's not at all uncommon for new residents to walk right into the trap of picking a soul-crushing neighborhood and hating the city as a result.

So I posted this on the Baseball board but over the last year there's been some big changes in Minor League Baseball that have impacted both the Bulls and the Mudcats. MLB has taken over MiLB's operations, contracted 40 teams (including the Burlington Royals), eliminated short season play entirely, and restructured the leagues at the Triple-A classification and at the Low-A and Advanced-A classifications. What that means in practical application:

The Bulls are still Triple-A and still affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays. They're no longer in the International League (which doesn't exist any more) but are now in AAA-East's Southeastern Division with their old rivals from the International League South plus a few additions. The Southeast Division is now:

  • Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox)
  • Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays)
  • Gwinnett Stripers (Atlanta Braves)
  • Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Miami Marlins) (moved up from Double-A to Triple-A)
  • Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals) (moved from the Pacific Coast League)
  • Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) (moved from the Pacific Coast League, previously affiliated with Texas Rangers)
  • Norfolk Sounds (Baltimore Orioles)
The rest of Triple-A East is:

Midwest Division
  • Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Indians)
  • Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates)
  • Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs) (moved from the Pacific Coast League)
  • Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds)
  • Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City Royals) (moved from the Pacific Coast League)
  • St. Paul Saints (Minnesota Twins) (moved from independent American Association)
  • Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers)
Northeast Division
  • Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays)
  • Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies)
  • Rochester Red Wings (Washington Nationals, previously affiliated with Minnesota Twins)
  • Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees)
  • Syracuse Mets (New York Mets)
  • Worcester Red Sox (Boston Red Sox)
The Mudcats, meanwhile, have moved down a classification from the High-A Carolina League to the Low-A East with a mix of teams that were formerly in the Carolina League and the Low-A South Atlantic League. The Mudcats are in the Central Division:

Low-A East Central Division
  • Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee Brewers) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
  • Down East Wood Ducks (Texas Rangers) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
  • Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Houston Astros) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
  • Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (Chicago White Sox) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
Low-A East North Division
  • Delmarva Shorebirds (Baltimore Orioles) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
  • Fredericksburg Nationals (Washington Nationals) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
  • Lynchburg Hillcats (Cleveland Indians) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
  • Salem Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
Low-A East South Division
  • Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League, previously affiliated with San Francisco Giants)
  • Charleston RiverDogs (Tampa Bay Rays) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League, previously affiliated with New York Yankees)
  • Columbia Fireflies (Kansas City Royals) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League, previously affiliated with New York Mets)
  • Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs) (moved from High-A Carolina League)
The rest of NC's teams are in the new High-A East, which was cobbled together from the Carolina League, the South Atlantic League, the Low-A Midwest League, and the Short Season-A New York-Penn League.

High-A East North Division
  • Aberdeen IronBirds (Baltimore Orioles) (moved from Short Season A New York-Penn League)
  • Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) (moved from Short Season A New York-Penn League)
  • Hudson Valley Renegades (New York Yankees) (moved form Short Season A New York-Penn League, previously affiliated with Tampa Bay Rays)
  • Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Philadelphia Phillies) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
  • Wilmington Blue Rocks (Washington Nationals) (moved from High-A Carolina League, previously affiliated with Kansas City Royals)
High-A East South Division
  • Asheville Tourists (Houston Astros) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League, previously affiliated with Colorado Rockies)
  • Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) (moved from Low-A Midwest League)
  • Greensboro Grasshoppers (Pittsburgh Pirates) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
  • Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
  • Hickory Crawdads (Texas Rangers) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
  • Rome Braves (Atlanta Braves) (moved from Low-A South Atlantic League)
  • Winston-Salem Dash (Chicago White Sox) (moved from High-A Carolina League)

The takeaway here is that there is a team in Kinston that goes by the name Down East Wood Ducks and it would take a master’s thesis to capture all the cultural layers involved in this.

Hot humid nights at Grainger Stadium brings back lots of memories. Haven’t been able to see the Wood Ducks up close but hope to get back there. In Tripp’s terms, I’m guessing they are huge Caniacs too!

It's absolutely shocking to me that Kinston got another crack at a minor league Baseball team yet Wilmington somehow hasn't had one since the Waves played at UNCW 20 years ago!I know, ownership and stadium and all that but you'd think Port City would have found a way to build a stadium along the river or something by now. Or maybe it's just me I don't know.

If Wilmington continues to grow like it has been, they might qualify for an MLB team

everyone in charlotte is nice. even the guy screaming at wafflehouse threatening to shoot someone in the ass with buckshot took a moment to reassure everyone inside not to worry.

edit
even the drivers that dont use turn signals do the doubletap on their headlights when i was backing out of parking space

The fun thing about Charlotte is you get this first impression, then gradually realize the people are all from other places that have reputations for rudeness. So it really doesn't make any sense at all.
