I'm happy that Taylor isn't just a pure defense guy like I was kinda expecting him to be. He'll only at best be a 100 OPS+ guy, but he's actually useful as a hitter lower in your lineup.

Gotta say its nice to have a pro hitters throughout the lineup.

No more Kai Toms or josh van meters

Yeah that's another way to put it. Taylor isn't anything special of a batter, I'm just used to them having downright crap lower in their lineup.

He's like a 90 OPS+ hitter, which is miles better than the 30 OPS+ guys that were usually at the bottom of their lineup in the past.

That's really nice work from Ryan to buy another inning. It sounds so simple but such a big thing with these young relievers is purely and simply throwing strikes in that kind of situation.

Got a bad bounce on the seeing eye single, but then two easy ground balls. Sometimes these MRPs can throw a game out the window by walking someone, then you gotta burn more pitchers etc.

Still would like some more offense, let Bednar rest another day and be ready to go behind Chapman after Jones tomorrow.

Yeah they're putting this out of hand at this point. Cruz has had 2 super weak contact hits today, the BABIP gods are smiling on him.

The rest of the team being pretty good offensively to start the year is really masking how bad McCutchen has been at the plate so far.

I also wanted more runs because for whatever reason it seems like a 4+ run lead is the worst time for Bednar. I would like to let Hunter Stratton or somebody finish this out and have the pen rested for tomorrow and ready to do whatever it takes to try and seize a (hopeful) third win.

BRUBAKER TRADED TO YANKEES

The Pirates just traded J.T. Brubaker and $550,000 in international bonus pool space to the Yankees for a player to be named later.

Brubaker’s still building his way back up from his second Tommy John surgery, with an expectation of being able to pitch again in the bigs by the All-Star break.

I’m told not to anticipate the player to be named for a couple months. Usually a list that gets given to a team so they get a chance to scout with a specific focus.

"As we got into spring training, we started recognizing that if Bru’s contribution was gonna come more second half of 2024 and into 2025, started to feel good and learn more about our starting alternatives, which we felt just like opened up the possibility of maybe getting a different kind of value for him now as opposed to waiting," Ben Cherington replied to my question as to why now. "During spring training, we circled back to teams that had expressed interest in the past, and this is the one we wound up on with the Yankees.”

Brubaker's making $2.75 million this season, almost all of which will be savings for the Pirates.

He was likely to miss a lot of the season recovering from Tommy John, plus clears a spot for Skenes' inevitable arrival.

Yeah I really don't care about losing Brubaker, the Pirates have too many Brubaker caliber pitchers to begin with. If they were skeptical about him being effective out of the bullpen later this year, trading him for value (which seems like something halfway decent) is a no-brainer.

The big lead from the offense has allowed only Ryan and Fleming to be used today, and both did a nice job at eating innings. Fleming has gotten a bit wild in the 9th, but he did a nice job at closing it out.

Hell of a job from this team all around.

Another bullpen W

162-0

4 double plays 😍

:arr:

One thing i liked, was, they put themselves in some very dangerous defensive situations, but didn't buckle

Good to see the team continue to fight through it

I feel like we start off strong every year, and then around game 15-20 collapse. Why is that?
Other teams start gelling?

Video and adjustments get made?

Sail fast now, while the weather is fair, matey

We definitely need to be greedy now and strike while the iron is hot. I think expectations have to be taking 1 more in Miami and then winning a series vs. the Nats for a nice 5-2 start. Still, one game at a time, and looking ahead to a series where Bailey Falter is starting game 1 might be a nice reality check if nothing else.

I expect another lineup shakeup tomorrow but I'm not fully sure how it will look. Part of me thinks that Cruz will get a day down even though I really don't like that idea. Maybe that's a bad assumption, since I figure if Shelton were to do it, it would be vs. Puk, as my gut feeling is Weathers and Rogers aren't quite as extreme advantages.

More generally though, as bad as Cruz has looked at times, there's just not a strong reason to give Williams a lot of starts. Cruz is getting a bad draw with at least 5 straight lefties and possibly 6 if Corbin goes in game 2 of the Nats series. I'm sure he'll sit at least once, and maybe it would be with a rookie making his debut, but if anything, you'd maybe want the better glove with more contact pitchers on the mound.

Olivares has earned another go but isn't great in the field. I'm strongly pro-platooning Suwinski and I also think he's ideal as an actual pinch hit weapon. I hope they leave that much alone even if I could see something like Cutch sitting and Olivares being the DH, I dunno. Would be nice to see Cutch take the field, maybe can get his bat going. With 2 wins in our pocket, there's a lower stakes feeling, but would be nice to keep the pedal slammed down and try for a sweep if we can position ourselves. Really looking forward to Jones either way.
