$8m+ is a hell of a lot of money for someone who has only had 1 great season.

That is a hell of a risk by the Leafs. If Raddysh continues that form for the next few years, great deal, if he is a one season wonder, that is gonna be brutal contract.

honestly it is a big risk. but there's a decent chance it works out.

i feel better about this than say that david clarkson contract

Classic Leafs. They’ve loved playing a premium for old players on the back nine of their careers for 20 years now.

Numbers aside, this is a player with average skating and play in his own zone. There is a reason he’s been a career fringe NHLer. To pay and play him like a top 4 dman because he had a career year racking up PP points with the Hart trophy winner is foolish.

Guys like BriseBois, Zito, McCrimmon, and Tulsky all fundamentally understand that you pay for the next Raddysh, not pay him after the breakout. I would not be shocked, however, if there's an element of ownership pressure here, because the Toronto group has a long, sordid history of that.

I wonder if his 70 point season is the exception or the rule

It almost certainly will be, but if he was a 70 point two way defenseman he’d be getting a lot more than $8 million.

It will likely come in as a slight overpay for what he’s managed for the last three years, which is being a legit #3 defenseman. And you gamble on him capturing at least some of the upside of last season.

What did I say that wasn’t true?

If you are a Leafs fan you probably know the history better than I do. Committing to Tanev and Stolarz already looks iffy. Giving good money, term, and then counting on guys on the other side of 30 is not a great strategy in the modern NHL.
