Speculation: Quinn Hughes wants to contend

Can't have a Quinn Hughes thread without asinine takes like:
"Quinn Hughes will return (by far) the largest return of any trade in NHL history."

Obviously not a direct quote, but that is the non-ironic sentiment.
Largest return ever? Probably not.. but I don’t see how it wouldn’t be at minimum one of the top 3 in the cap era.

I’d be curious to know which trades you’d have ahead of it, since you seem to have such strong feelings about it?

Pettersson
Cozens, Byram, K.Helenius

Miller, 2nd
Mittelstadt, C.Ritchie

Hughes
Lafreniere, Miller, Schneider, 1st

Suter @50%, NYR 1st
C.Geekie

New top 6 F -
Jake Debrusk, Alex Lafreniere
Casey Mittelstadt, Dylan Cozens
Brock Boeser, Conor Garland

New top 4-
Keandre Miller, Bowen Byram
Braden Schneider, Filip Hronek

Three young centers-
Conor Geekie
Calum Ritchie
Konsta Helenius

Entire team rebuilt, now joining the ranks of bidder ourselves on the next Miller or Pettersson that becomes available.

What's a Hoglander, Lekkerimaki, Willander, 1st package fetch us at draft or in the offseason?

Definitely risks to doing this but there are rewards if the Canucks do their homework and make good trades. No doubt teams will engage and try to find deals that works for both sides. Might be a little setback but the Canucks can also draft more Grade A's in that setback/retool period... maybe 2 years. This is a case where it would not be a full rebuild that takes 5+ years.

Lots of copium in this thread from Canucks fans. Some of these trade requirements are hilarious.

Hughes has a NMC and is a couple years away from being a free agent.

He is going to dictate this situation and if he wants to get traded it will be for a return that will be extremely underwhelming.

Don’t take it ? Sure then he just walks when he can for nothing. It will be a lose lose situation
Ahh yes Dictating the situation without a NMC
And hey genius he wants that 8th year in his new contract

I don't think they care about the 8th year. He's in unique position, maybe unseen at this level and in this era.

Look at this way:

Quinn's contracts so far equal about 50M and he's about to sign for another 75-90 Million
Jack's contracts so far equal about 70M and he's going to sign another one in a few short years probably like 100M
Luke is about to sign probably 8x8 or something like that = 64M and will have another big contract after that,,,

SO between them - we're looking collectively at 400-450M+ between the brothers, not to mention, sponsorships, etc.....and you think Quinn's going to care about 1 year of 5-6M after taxes?

A team will not give up mega mega assets for Quinn if they aren't sure they can sign him. It just doesn't happen. He can't negotiate now, this isn't like Tkachuk - and the assumption - and given a lot of information out there in Hughes land - the boys have a unique ability to play together in their primes.

I can see a team wanting Quinn for 2 playoff runs understanding he'll likely go - but to say a team is going to throw one of the biggest returns ever? yeah IDK.

Pretty sure the chatter about Pettersson and Miller not getting along pre-dates Quinn's captaincy.
I could be wrong here, but shouldn't true leadership try to fix that instead of letting it go from not getting along to a complete rift...

Or is true leadership "if they want out I alaso want out"?

I really dont know what the canucks are doing. Pretty sure the bruins regret letting debrusk walk, they should try to resign boeser if they can

If Vancouver moves out miller AND pettersson and boeser I can guarantee Hughes will walk in 3 years. Why would he want to stay around

If you do a good job in the trades then they are fine. They are not "selling" it is a hockey trade. Thats why you add say Cozens and Byram, two good players instead of 1 roster player and magic beans.

It's a risk though, if the trades dont work out hes gone 100%. Why move 3 guys ??? If miller goes shouldn't elias be fine and back to normal or has there also been beef with the coach that we dont know about ???

I would just move miller but what do I know

If Hughes became remotely available I'd hope the Avs threw everyone but MacKinnon or Makar and every draft pick at the Canucks to get a deal done. Having the chance to play Hughes and Makar on separate pairings would allow them to basically have a Top2-3 defensemen out there for 80-90% of the game.

Canucks will give him an 8 year, 9 figure deal when it’s time. You see those forecasted cap changes? Miller seems like he’ll go - I’m betting in the off-season if these low ball offers are accurate. Boeser hopefully stays. This stuff around Hughes is sound and fury that signifies nothing. Here’s hoping win #4 in a row comes tonight.

Yeah, I can't really see the Canucks trading him anytime soon. Sounds like (at least from my limited knowledge on the situation), they're gonna try to stay competitive even if/while moving Miller, Boeser and/or Pettersson.

Earliest they might move him is summer 2026 if they're really not gaining any traction on a contract extension, though I fully expect Vancouver to offer a massive 8-year deal. A lot probably depends on how the next 1 1/2 seasons go and the outlook of the team at that time as to whether or not Quinn decides to extend. No point in him thinking too much about it until then unless the bottom really drops out on this team and he needs to consider requesting a trade, but that's highly unlikely.
