Speculation: Quinn Hughes wants to contend

Why have a thread on something highly unpredictable 2 years in advance?
Because it’s already been made known that the Canucks are listening to offers on Miller, EP, Boeser, and Demko. If those guys are moved it stands to reason that Quinn, who is a UFA in 2 years, will want to move on during a rebuild/retool.

Obviously it would be a disaster to let him walk to FA, hence the speculation about his trade value.

Unlike the others, there's no way he returns anything less than a King's Ransom, because he's 25 and about to win his second consecutive Norris. Every team in the league will ask about him.

Start the bidding at:

U25 top 4 defenceman
Blue chip prospect
Blue chip prospect
1st round pick
1st round pick
Dude shut the f*** up. McDavid might not even bring back that price with two years left on his contract, let alone a guy who isn't even a Top 10 player in the league.

New Jersey is the obvious one, right?
- Nemec or Casey
- Mercer
- 2026 1st Round Pick
- 2x 2025 2nd Round Picks

Vancouver sends Teddy Blueger over as well.

I don’t know where, or even if, Quinn goes, but I’m almost positive Canucks fans are going to be disappointed in the return gauging by this thread.
He’s a Hart level Norris winning dman on his second straight likely Norris win. Giving up an underperforming Nemec and 2 D prospects along with a 50pt point young player and a late first is not much for this guy.

The offers in here for Hughes are embarrassing. Yeesh.

JR effectively said "If I blow this team up, Quinn Hughes isn't going to want to stick around for that" and followed it up with "We want him here forever".

It's a bullshit thread.

My offer wasn't really a troll though - you're not getting a Hart candidate and perennial Norris-level Dman for any of the offers listed here. But ultimately he's not for sale.
"If we were going to completely start over that means he goes, and we’d like to figure out a way that he’s here forever.”

Exact response. He's crossing his fingers. Nucks are definitely about to retool by sounds of it. That has to go very well to convince Hughes, otherwise off he goes to UFA

He's not a Hart level player. He's not a lock for the Norris.

Erik Karlsson (who was a Top 5 player in the league) returned a 1st Rounder, two 2nd Rounders, a blue chip prospect, a bottom 6 center, and a bottom pair defenseman.
Seth Jones (who was a Top 10 dman) returned a 1st Rounder, a 2nd Rounder, a 1st Round pick swap, and an underperforming blue chip prospect.
Jack Eichel (who was Buffalo's franchise player) returned a 1st Rounder, a 2nd Rounder, a Top 6 winger, and an underperforming blue chip prospect.

Vancouver fans are being delusional.

If the season ended today. He takes the Norris no problem. Even gets a few Hart votes.

So I heard a rumour that if Pettersson, Miller, Boeser, Demko and the rest of the Canucks core are traded then Quinn will want a trade from the Canucks.

I mean if they do trade Hughes they're going to be the worst team in the league and unless they trade him Garland is likely going to take over as 16th captain in their franchise's history, that or Tyler Myers anyway. But I think a star leaving their team is usually a bad sign unless they understand that in order to win they need to want to because quitting is almost like losing.

But if Quinn gets traded I only see him going to New Jersey. It's what the NHL wants really.
Want to contend? Nah, he probably wants to lose every game. /S

Please don't ever name drop Seth Jones and Jack Eichel in a Quinn Hughes thread again.

Quinn Hughes Norris Trophy finishes...1st, 9th, 13th, 15th
Seth Jones Norris Trophy finishes...4th, 9th, 14th, 18th

Quinn Hughes Hart Trophy finishes...7th
Jack Eichel Hart Trophy finishes...8th

His career is significantly closer to these guys' than to Erik Karlsson's. You may seethe now.

I am the furthest thing from a Vancouver fan.

He is absolutely a Hart level player. Erik Karlsson was exiting his prime and had just come off a major surgery. Jones was not even close to the same level of player. Eichel had a neck surgery concern and again not even close to the same level of player.

Some of you don’t watch hockey outside your own teams and it shows. He is at the same level as Makar, if not better.

Winning what? You guys missed the playoffs last year.
And the Rangers were President's trophy winners last year, how's that going for them this year?

Winning environment, just like I said.
2nd in PP
3rd in PK
Goals against is down about 1.5 from last yr.
Markstrom is top third G in the league

Karlsson was 3 years older than Hughes is currently, two seasons removed from his last Norris (though one year removed from being a runner-up), and was not the player he had been previously after struggling through injuries; calling him a top 5 player at that point is quite a stretch.

Calling Seth Jones a top-10 dman is hilarious. He received zero Norris votes the year before the trade and was 14th the year before that. A one-off fourth-place finish 4 years before the trade does not make him top-10.

Eichel had massive injury concerns that everyone knows affected his value.

There's not a single factor that would detract from Hughes' value. He is massively underpaid for a full two seasons after this one, has no trade protection, no significant injury history, is the reigning Norris winner and is looking like a sure shot to at least be a finalist again this year (barring major injury).

Karlsson won the Norris, then was the runner-up twice in the three seasons before he was traded. I remember the coverage of Crosby vs Karlsson as the two best players in the NHL during that 2017 ECF.

Seth Jones finished 14th in votes that year because he missed 14 games and played on a pair with Werenski, who finished 8th in votes. Yes, he had an unimpressive final year with Columbus, and he seemed on the downswing, but (at worst) he was one year removed from being a Top 10 dman.

Not gonna bother arguing about the unknown extent to which Eichel's trade value was affected.

The factor that affects Hughes' trade value is the ceiling on any given player's trade value. Let alone one with two years left until UFA.
Seth Jones isn't even close to being the best D of his draft class.
Does that matter? The 2018 draft didn't produce a single defenseman who can defend at a top pair NHL level.
