Speculation: Quinn Hughes wants to contend

Have you watched Quinn Hughes at all over the last 3-4 seasons?

Nemec

One all-world Dman for a brand new D-corps. That might get it done. Maybe...

I know my avatar will discount my opinion, but I actually greatly admire NJ’s current group… I would do it. Honestly, there isn’t room for all of those guys anyway. You’d have Hughes, Hughes, Hamilton, Pesce, Seigenthaler, Dillon on the back end. Casey and Nemec are blocked anyway. I would do it. The opportunity is so one of a kind, so small and so unique. I’d pay that price. It doesn’t remove much from the NHL roster for a team that is set up to want to compete over the next several seasons and moves high end pieces, but pieces who are mostly blocked.

This is why you don’t have a 650 year old president of operations running your team

It’s past his bed time

And he is out here doing interviews tanking values

From a value standpoint, of course he is. Doesn’t change the fact that the Canucks will be in a position of weakness and that can be detrimental for value.

In this scenario, it wouldn't. Unless Hughes said he only wanted to play for New Jersey and nowhere else, pretty much every team outside of a few would be making offers on him. Even teams who are otherwise good on defense would seriously consider making a major change because Hughes is just that damn good.

It's the bidding war that determines value. Which is why Pettersson's value is fairly high despite what some here would think. But it's also why Miller's has tanked.

“If we were going to completely start over that means he goes,” Rutherford told The Globe and Mail on Tuesday of Hughes.

From JR’s mouth himself. The only trolling is whatever the Canucks organization is doing to their fans.
I don't really see why that's interesting. If the Oilers trade Drai, Hyman and Ekholm for futures, McDavid would want out.

He's stated that a full rebuild won't happen and that if he has to make a deal, they are going to be done with the intention of keeping Hughes a Canuck for life.

This thread could have been written about any player in the league.

They want to contend.

If management guts the team, they probably don't want to be the only ones left to feed on the rotting corpse of a franchise.

It’s stating the obvious. Of course one of the best in the world wants to win. All I really think Rutherford is saying is that they are not going to make trades that are simply futures. They want to be a playoff team and build from there. He wants Hughes to always be a Canuck.

Vancouver should have fired their coach and GM the moment speculation began that both Miller and Petterson were on the way out.

The fact that this has gone on long enough that more players are on the way out tells me they need to fire everyone in charge of hockey related matters.

If the owner comes on TV and apologizes, is it too late to save the team? Could they possibly get by just by trading Miller and firing their head of hockey operations, GM and head coach?

Alot of people saying this, truthfully teams have likely known the situation/Canucks willingness for awhile now.

I doubt this is groundbreaking news to any teams. Doubt it really changes much.

I applaud Canucks management for trying to make a hockey trade with JT or EP, to keep things rolling - but Hughes only has 2 years remaining after this season. They have a very difficult task ahead of them building the team into a contender. At some point, you have to consider whether he will re-sign when eligible in July 2026, and whether it makes more sense to trade him earlier to get the biggest return.

New Jersey has 2/3 of the brothers, so the Canucks have to trade him there. I don't make the rules. They are what they are. They have Nemec, which is a great starting point. A couple first round picks, some young roster players, etc.

I understand that he's a franchise player, and teams never win those trades. So I am not suggesting that they should move a franchise player. I am only suggesting that they should explore it if they think he won't re-sign in a year, because he will never be worth more than he will be this summer.

Oh welz, sometimes you drop a carton of eggs and an omelete is made.

Nucks and Isles - Petterson, 1st round pick, D Petey, Hoggy for Dobson and Barzal and Nelson (Petey can play with Horvat)

Miller for any 1b/2a center and picks
