Player Discussion Quinn Hughes, Pt. VII

I could stand corrected, but other than the Sedins and the Steamer, Stan Smyl, I'm trouble remembering anyone who spent their entire NHL career as a Vancouver Canuck. And retired with the blue and green still on their backs.
One reason for this is that we have no cups.

The players go chase them elsewhere.
But Quinn Hughes needs to be the 'fourth' lifetime Canuck. Back up the Brinks truck, and give him whatever he wants. He's the franchise's first Norris Trophy winner and an automatic first ballot Hall-of-Famer, if he stays healthy.

It's a complete 'no brainer' that he spends his entire career in Vancouver.

Yup

The highest scorer out of those 3 mentioned and isn't a Canuck currently (Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes) is Dennis Kearns. Followed by Gary Lupul, Ivan Hlinka, Jiri Bubla. After that it is Jake Virtanen lol. The goalie with the most outside of Demko is Frank Caprice and, to be honest, I have no idea who Kaprice is.

They need to prioritise resigning Quinn Hughes, but doubt he’s in a rush to do so unless we can show some relative progress in the post season.

So irritating listening to East Coast fans on why Makar or even Werenski is better than Hughes in the Hughes for Hart thread. I am quite surprised Hughes won the Norris last season with so many yahoo's going against him.
That is because the Norris has evolved to the highest scoring defenceman. They need something like the Selke for Dmen.
IMO the BEST Dman trophy should be the Orr Cup. No other Dman has had six 100 pt seasons, won the scoring title twice and had a +124 and multiple +80 +/- seasons.
Maybe flawed to some people but a +/- that big does indicate good defence.

A bad +/- shows that even with the players point total he was on the ice for that total and the minus.
So Boeser has 35 points and is a -15, so he has been on the ice for 50 goals against while involved in scoring 35, still 50 against isn't great especially as they count PP & PK GF points as a plus but they don't count PK GA points against.

Does he become the highest paid d-man in NHL history? Has to be at least 12 mil AAV, you'd think. I think 12 would quite honestly be a discount compared to his effectiveness.
By the time his contract is up, 16 will be market value, 14 will be a discount, and 12 would be outright theft.

I'd give him 16 without batting an eye if that's what it takes, assuming the cap outlook stays rosy. He seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders and would be cognizant of the fact that he wants a competitive team around him to compete with, too, so I doubt he'll try to completely max out.

It's because they saw Makar in the finals and only saw Hughes during the Canadian division (if at all). In hockey games that werent past their bedtimes, Makar has been great. They refuse to go past those old memories and their bias attached to the names. Its like people who argued a 50 year old Michael Jordan could beat a 30 year old Lebron 1 on 1, they see names and just turn their brain off.

There is no statistical argument for Makar being better offensively, being a more important factor for his team, being any good at all when Nate isnt on the ice, etc. The only argument for his defensive play is he penalty kills, but his 5 on 5 defensive numbers are worse than Hughes. A few posters in that thread have decided that Hughes is sheltered but then post stats that disprove their own point. Hughes plays more high quality of competition minutes each game than Makar or Werenski. But he also just plays a lot more 5 on 5 in general, so his % of high QoC minutes is lower than Makars... but there's only so many minutes in a game. Reminiscent of the PDO discussions really, people just don't get simple math. If the raw totals are wildly different, then ratios are a bad way to compare them (generally).
