I don't think anyone is sleeping on Hughes, more like they slept on Tanev the year before, not fully realizing the extent to which Tanev stabilized the pairing.
I like everything about Hughes game, until the other team establishes possession and works it along the boards. It's not just a matter of size, either, quite often he'll look pensive and slow to challenge the puck, perhaps trying to read the play, but giving too much time. I think he's fully capable of making adjustments, and hopefully the improved top 9 and maybe some system modifications will help him out.
