Some scouts were saying Matthews would be in the discussion with Mac and Eichel this year, sorry to say but I saw nothing as to where he'd be in the discussion, nothing and I watched every US game. Another case of an overrated player prior to his draft year. I'd love to eat crow come draft time in 2016 but the guy simply did not impress me at all.

You must have been watching a different tournament than me. I don't think he was dominant, but he didn't look out of place at all. For a 2016, thats good. Most of the best 2016's would look like the worst player on their team. Even some of the 2015's looked out of place.

Russia did the same thing to us in the pre-competition games except it was even more lopsided. It's kinda scary (as a fan) going into a game against a team that you know you can dominate and still lose to very easily.

Hoping for a Canada-Sweden final. Sweden's D turns the puck over a lot...and we have the forwards that can exploit that.

Russia has been the kryptonite for Canada and the USA in the past few WJCs.

Interesting how its always golden boy Eichel who makes a brilliant pass that his teammates fail to catch.

I'm going to think outside the box for half a second here... Isn't it possible that he is simply missing the passes? Maybe, its his fault???

I saw one I can recall vividly where he tried to hit a driving wood going to the front of the net and Eichel simply *GASP* missed?!?!?!?

You mean that time that Wood was tripped?

Wow i love how you guys love to blame it one player only... There is 20+ guys who play for the USA and not only one guy...

Better team wins always. Its really stupid to say that better team loses. Of course there is luck and etc, but still better team wins. Always.

Thanks for this. It defies all logic to claim that the better team did not win. The better team is better by virtue that it won. By definition the better team is the one that wins the game. Any other criteria used to determine which team is better is arbitrary.

This extends Russia's wins against the USA in the WJC to 4 wins

Last 10 meetings, surprisingly the USA have only won 3.

2003 - Russia 5-1 USA Preliminary Round
2004 - USA 4-2 Russia Preliminary Round
2005 - USA 5-4 Russia Preliminary Round
2005 - Russia 7-2 USA Semi Final
2006 - Russia 5-2 USA Semi Final
2008 - USA 3-2 Russia Preliminary Round
2008 - Russia 4-2 USA Bronze Medal Game
2013 - Russia 2-1 USA Preliminary Round
2014 - Russia 5-3 USA Quarter Final
2015 - Russia 3-2 USA Quarter Final

dissappointing tourney for Eichel, but at the same time he was clearly the most skilled player on his team, and by a good margin.

Why are you talking about Canada? DeAngelo is a tool for throwing unprovoked punches at the end of the game. I wish Canada played the US again so he could get his bell rung by Virtanen or Ritchie.

C'mon. Tired of my fellow Canadians screaming at the Americans for being classes. You don't know what was said on ice level. How many times have we seen the Russians taunt losing teams (specifically us and the Americans).

People need to just shut up and let it go. Chances are the Russians chirped the **** out of the other team at the end there and it was just a little scrum. I'd throw a punch of what was likely said on ice level actually happened.

It would be cool to see how some of the top tier prospects would do without the ridiculous scrutiny and over analysis by the media.

Jack Eichel looks like he is going to be a very good player.

Oh well. Congrats to Russia. Their kids played hard. Hopefully we'll have better luck next year (being on a different side of the bracket as Russia for one).

Means absolutely nothing. We scored 9 goals against Sweden in prelims. Look at us now, and look at Sweden.

Yeah, never understand the fascination with preliminary games on these boards. The Canadians made light work of the Fins before the 2014 tournament, only to be stomped in the Semi Final. That is one example, many exist for various nations.

They mean nothing, they are a tune up with teams looking to find the right line etc.

If I recall the Russia Canada game (Only pre-tournament one I watched) both sides were missing key players.

Losing in precomp games is not the same as losing in tournament games. USA best Sweden 10-5 in precomp...That doesn't mean Sweden is terrible.

Eichel was fine. Could see the skill on display even if the points weren't there.

Both teams sat key players. Meaningless to compare prelims to tourney games.

Some of you just see what you want and not what actually happened. Eichel had four points in five games playing against some players two drafts ahead of him. He was completely dominant during some stretches and set up many teammates with grade A chances many times that weren't finished. He had a good tournament.
