Lots of sour feelings over what should be a fun event. Finland displayed the exact edge they were expected to, explosive finishing. Canada fell a bit short, as they have all tournament. Piling on hate on individual kids as if they were some traitors to the Commonwealth... take a step back, and a deep breath. Jesus.

I am Canadian but am always overjoyed when Canada loses to a better team (except in the Finals of course).

Team play beat individual talent today: the sport is doing well.

All in all, I feel that team Canada is a bit lost in their ways. In recent years other nations have been successful with a more puck carrying and passing game. It seems like Canada tried to emulate this to some extent while not really doing it with a proper plan or clear cut strategy from putting together the team and to coaching them. I have no doubt that Canada has the ability to play such hockey but the tesm needs better preparations and coaching. Why not hire an european coach?

oh and the goaltending? It was positively swedish circa mid 90s.

Lost in their way? They won the tournament last year, won U-18 and u-17 tournaments in the last year and are obviously dominant at the Mens level.

Over the past 5 years their results are fairly similar to Sweden and Russia and better than any other nation.

Why would they get a European coach when Canadian coaches are much better and right there for them to hire?

Personally, Jake, I have to point out that the last 3 penalties Finland got (which Canada used to score 2 goals) were absolutely ridiculous and should not have been called.

Are you including the hit from behind?

Because not only was that a penalty (it's about as clear cut as it gets), but Canada didn't score on that powerplay. Could have easily been 5 and a game, in which case Laine would have been gone.

I'm shocked that Finland won today, given how much I've heard about the refs favouring Canada.

It is just that in this tournament Finland had better individuals than Canada. Ironic innit? I didn't see anyone in the maple leaf jersey better than Laine, Puljujärvi, Juolevi or Aho.

What's even more ironic is that I wasn't even a bit worried with Canada leading 0-2. Finland was just better, and don't you Canadians dare to start with all that "USA USA USA we're number oooooooone ugh ugh" nonsense. You are better than that.

Canada was worse than Finland today. As simple as that.

I agree with what you said. Finland played better than Canada. Don't try and bring up individual players talent. We have our big boys sitting in the NHL.

The Finnish skater can choose his skating lane, which he did. Perfectly fine according to the rules. If the Canadian would have switched lanes again and the Finn would have blocked that, THEN it would be a penalty.

That's like saying the kid who runs around the playground swinging his arms like a helicopter yelling "if you get in my way it's your fault" is blame-free if he hits someone.

If you were allowed to purposefully block players by choosing your "lane" to be right in front of them when they were trying to get out to coverage on a lost draw, teams would do it all the time. Imagine how much time you'd have at the point if all the defensive forwards got picked off the draw.

The Finnish player leaned into the Canadian player with the clear intent to impede. If the Finns had held the line and kept the puck in at the point, it would have become very obvious what just took place when there was no Canadian forward there to challenge.

Jake Virtanen: "Personally, I think the refs were a little bit on their side, that's just how I think"

Personally, I think Jake Virtanen was a little bit on their side, that's just how I think

Virtanen was pretty awful the whole tournament. I can't believe the guy was a top pick- or that he has NHL experience. I can see him as an NHL player longer term, but not really as a top 6 forward.

Especially if he comes out of all that thinking he somehow got shafted by the refs. He has a lot of growing up to do if he wants to be a NHL professional, I'd say.

There isn't a single person to blame in this game other than Virtanen.

3 of the dumbest penalties in the history of this tournament, and honestly that is no exaggeration.

One negates a crucial 5 on 3
Two taken on the same shift, and the second one made the Hicketts penalty a 5 on 3...

Just terrible.

HAHAHAH clearly you only started watching the tournament this year.

Yeah Blackwood played great :sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm:

Solid .753 save percentage for the tournament

Yep, don't disagree with that, but like I tried to say, didn't see better players in maple leaf jersey today. Nothing else, big boys weren't around today. No hard feelings, it is what it is.

The USA chant is half-serious and half-taunting-in-jest in nearly every international sport.

Congratulations to Finland; they deserved the win. And my goodness their top line is exciting to watch.

For Canada, discipline was obviously part of the reason for them being beaten.

Exciting game over all with lots of drama although a few too many penalties for my liking.

The last period and overtime of the Russia-Denmark game was also terrific.

Shame several of the Team Canada players are complaining about the officiating. They didn't seem to complain after they dove to get a 5 Min powerplay and Debrincat ejected in the first period against USA.

The officiating was fine. Sure, you may get away with some of it in other leagues, but not because it isn't a penalty.

Does anyone have a video of Strome talking to the refs after the game? People made it seem like he went after him with his stick?

At least next year the gold medal game will be in the MECCA of hockey Montreal,no greater atmosphere.
