Blame the coach not the player. Virtanen isn't the one putting himself out there as a screen on the PP.

He was an energy player last year so I have no idea why HC thought he'd come in this year and be an offensive force. It's short sighted thinking.

Not a stretch for Hockey Canada to think that a player coming from the NHL could perhaps be an impact player for them.

Speaking as someone who was shouting for Nylander at the 6th pick, this tournament stings. What a letdown.

Finland can score but their D is bad and the goaltending makes every team they play look like offensive powerhouses.....

Upon seeing the replay, he moved to intercept Stephens path.

Agree to disagree I guess.

Oh he absolutely did, but because he is in front in that play he can choose his lane anyway he wants to. His first block can't count, if he would have switched again and blocked the Canadian then it would be a penalty.

Just got back from the game. Crazy experience although I've gotten used to these junior games after all these years.

I just wanted to point out my experience with Canadian fans. I talked to a quite a few of them and have to say that everyone was just super nice. Good sports and fun people. Zero of the supposed arrogance we can so often read about here on the boards.

I just wanted to say thanks and good game.

Never judge a country based on anonymous posters on the internet. ;)

Finns are deservedly moving on, must be a treat for the home fans.

Exactly what I expected to see. Virtanen being used as the scapegoat. Clearly he was the only player to take bad penalties, and not produce. Give me a break, could he have done more in the tournament heck yes, but was he the only reason Canada lost heck no.

Worst organized team since 1998, the players and the coach weren't on the same page. Lowry seemed to be treating the game like it was being played on a smaller ice surface. The kids had the speed and the skill but Lowry didn't know how to use it. With a gameplan like Lowry had he needed more goal scorers but he didn't have that. Not sure how they select players but if you're just selecting based on who fits your gameplan then he should have selected Dante Salituro, Zachary Senyshyn, Mike Amadio, etc. and more offensive defenceman like Jakob Chychrun or even Sean Day.

Lowry Didn't Coach to Win

To suggest that Team Canada coach Dave Lowry was solely responsible for one of Canada’s worst results ever in World Junior play would be unfair. Clearly, the team was average at best. Having said that, Lowry made it clear all week long that he was in over his head.

Lowry’s inability to find and settle on line combinations that made sense was laughable to watch. There was one common denominator amongst the four top teams in the tournament (Finland, Russia, Sweden, United States): They all lumped their most dangerous forwards together on deadly, overpowering scoring lines. Lowry outright refused to go with the flow. And in the end, it cost him. Here's how:

I thought it was a joke at first but he actually said that. Marner also said he meant to grab the Finnish player but "it ended up being a punch."

I hated watching this team so I don't feel bad about the loss. Felt the same in 2013 after watching Scheifele dive the entire tournament. Good luck to Finland.

tbh the most entertaining part of this team was Strome flopping on the ice to try to draw a major and then pointing his stick at the refs at the end

Good riddance. Hoping for a Finland/US final

Yeah I was gonna ask what the hell Strome was doing after the final whistle. Looked like he was gonna go all Oglethorpe on the ref.

Him trying to draw a 5 was hilarious as well. I wonder what he did during his brief visit to the hallway/locker room.

So as an "mostly" unbiased fan (in that I'm not a team Canada or Finland fan), some observations. First 2 periods, Strome, Virtanen, Konecky, and Dermott were the best team Canada players IMO (followed probably by McKeown and Stephens). As a Canes fan, hate to say it but Fleury and Hickey didn't look good. I'm not talking about the goal at the end of the period which the both flubbed (as that happens) or Hickey falling down to allow a break-away, but they just didn't bring much of anything. Passive, not aggressive, not carrying the play and playing like they were afraid to make a mistake. Of course, that's pretty much how all of TC's defense played, but still, you expect more from those guys.

Marner wasn't very good at the first 2 periods and played too selfish, but was a damn stud in the 3rd and you can see why he was drafted so high. He was dangerous pretty much every time he had the puck in the 3rd. Sanheim wasn't good defensively, picked his spots poorly leading to odd man rushes, but he was really good on the PP and should have always seen top PP time. His play along the board on that one play was the main reason for the TC PP goal. All in all, other than Dermott, and maybe McKeown, the defense was pretty underwhelming, but not nearly as bad as Finland's defense.

Goaltending on both sides was pretty suspect, but stupid penalties probably ruined it for Canada. Virtanen's 3 penalites were all just plain dumb and Marner, who played great in the 3rd, took an idiotic penalty that negated a PP at a time when TC needed a goal.

Aho, Laine, and Puljujarvi are really fun to watch. All in all, a very entertaining game to watch.

At 2-0 we should win this game...

we beat ourself with stupid penalities...(Virtanen, Strome, Marner...)...you can't take those PIM in a game like that...that kill 2 critical PP...you cant call the ref or other player after each play...you kill yourself...Lowry should send a message by benching specialy Virtanen and Strome 2-3 shifts...

congrat to team Finland...they have the 2 best player, Lain et Puljujarvi...they deserved the W.

I am sure he is drawing more negative attention than normal because it was an elimination game but the facts are:

Virtanen was returning to this team as a 19 year old with NHL experience. He was expected to use his large body to physically dominate the younger and smaller players on the ice.

What we got was someone who looked completely out of place. He was at best ineffective in the other games and flat out detrimental to the team today. Not only did he take penalties at terrible times, he also took them in terrible locations, namely the offensive side of the rink. Taking two separate minor penalties on the same play is one of the lowest hockey IQ plays I have seen in recent memory.

The only thing worse than the two stupid penalties that Virtanen took in the third was the fact that Lowry actually put him back on the ice after. Embarrassing! He should have been stapled to the bench. For all the talk every year of getting NHL players this is one guy I wish had stayed in the NHL.

I will admit that this finnish fellow virtanen somehow playing for canada(?) was bad but who really caught my eye was the idiot who thought that canada didn't need a powerplay with like 3 minutes left of the game. If that moron didn't pull that one antic his team could be in the semi-final now.

But I guess there is plenty of blame to go around?

Virtanen was probably just trying to make his Finnish ancestors happy. :sarcasm:

I would be pissed too if he was on my team.
too bad he sucked all tourny. Very frustrated guy.

Congrats Finland

It should be be Sweden vs US in final , by far the best teams this year. But everything can happen in hockey. Im mean bounces go in sometimes. US and Swedes has it all, theyre smart tuff, offenisve good & defense is solid. Biggerst powerhouses this year.

The Finnish skater can choose his skating lane, which he did. Perfectly fine according to the rules. If the Canadian would have switched lanes again and the Finn would have blocked that, THEN it would be a penalty.

He dropped his shoulder into Stephens. It was a hit and Stephens didn't have the puck. He also chose a lane that Stephens was already in. It was a clear pick off a face-off. That is interference.

All in all, I feel that team Canada is a bit lost in their ways. In recent years other nations have been successful with a more puck carrying and passing game. It seems like Canada tried to emulate this to some extent while not really doing it with a proper plan or clear cut strategy from putting together the team and to coaching them. I have no doubt that Canada has the ability to play such hockey but the tesm needs better preparations and coaching. Why not hire an european coach?

oh and the goaltending? It was positively swedish circa mid 90s.

There isn't a single person to blame in this game other than Virtanen.

3 of the dumbest penalties in the history of this tournament, and honestly that is no exaggeration.

One negates a crucial 5 on 3
Two taken on the same shift, and the second one made the Hicketts penalty a 5 on 3...

Just terrible.
