US has been going despite Caufield. He hasn't really impressed yet still time though.
If he doesn't get it going against Finland I really don't see it happening if the US advances to the gold medal game. I mean, sure he had that goal but like...it was a 5 on 3. And sure he looked more engaged tonight but a lot of his shots weren't very dangerous. Probably his best game of the tournament but that still hasn't been enough. Certainly hyperbolic to say the US team gets going when Caufield does when he really hasn't and this was the Americans' lowest scoring game since the Russia game.

Kid just doesn’t stop moving his feet. He’s got a high motor. Attacks the puck carrier when he’s defending. Seems to always be right in the middle of the action. Not afraid to get his nose dirty. Offensively he battles on the boards and understands how to cycle the puck. Shows some nice skills as well.

Personally I’m a sucker for guys who can skate. Berard is fast but has a great stride and showed some impressive edge work all tournament.

My older brother was always the smallest guy on the ice but he was always one of the best players because he was an unreal skater. He was teammates with Matt Gilroy growing up and played against Erik Nystrom.

I feel like being a superior skater can allow you to compete and give you a chance anywhere on the ice all 200ft.

Berard plays bigger than his size too. Just a lot to like about him. Also, his dad is a college coach and usually Coaches kids have a good understanding of the game. You can just see it

Ok, that’s way more credit I gave to a Rags prospect than I can almost handle :sarcasm:;)
Great Post my HF Isles friend.

Excellent observations—though I think you underestimate Berard's future when you limit him to bottom six. Given the similarities—size, drafted late, high motor—I can see him succeeding like Gallagher, Atkinson, or Zuccarello.

The 5 on 3 is IRRELEVANT. He was in alone on the goaltender which has happened 2 or 3 other times. He hit the open spot this time which he hasn't most of his other chances. Hitting the open spot with a one timer is what makes him a goal scorer and a viable prospsect. Whether he is just trying too hard or that skill doesn't translate to the NHL has yet to be determined.

Could be. I liked Lundell's start to the season and took him in my pool. Lost him in the waiver draft though. Lost Denisenko last year too. I filled with Boldy and Seth Jarvis so I'm not too disappointed.
Hmm: I get Boldy. He looks dynamic (and Florida was supposedly trading the 12th for him if Nashville took Lundell and Askarov was around)

Deni is a bit of an enigma so he knows!

I’ve been surprised by the anger toward him and Kaliyev. I think they’re both getting more shit than they deserve.

I don't know if it's because Caufield is a Habs prospect and they as a team/fans get a lot of scorn on HF but you would think Caufield was the #1 overall pick or something. Yeah, he's struggled to put the puck in the net at this tournament but let's keep things in perspective.

The criticism probably has something to do with several Hans fans on here arguing that he has a ceiling of a perennial rocket contender

Well, all fans tend to overrate their players/prospects. HF is notorious for this. That said, what Caufield does or doesn't do at the NHL level has very little to do with what he does or doesn't do at tournaments like this.

wouldn’t shock me at all. I was basically keeping low and safe expectations. He looks like a high floor player if that makes sense? To me that’s a good thing. Absolutely he could become a top6 winger.

If so, the hate still doesn't appear to be a proportionate response.

By my count, he had a breakaway, a good scoring chance off of a face-off, a rush down the right side where he hit the post, and probably a couple others that weren't quite as high danger, but still good nonetheless. And he scored a goal, which is what everybody is saying he needs to do. If there was a game in this tournament where the piling on should cease for at least a little while, I would think this one would've been it.

I wouldn’t ever expect this. For one, there’s a few Montreal fans that rub people the wrong way and are just asking for people to hate Cole. But the other thing is that he’s just a divisive prospect. You and I both know first hand that there’s people out there that wouldn’t buy into his game even if he scored 2 goals a game at this tournament.

I see a faster, less physical verison of Ryan Callahan.

This whole theory that high draft picks are supposed to dominate at the WJCs is absolutely “bizarre”. That somehow there is a correlation between “possible bust” because there numbers weren’t a PPG + every game. Every year it fills up pages.
It's so utterly stupid and without perspective and it goes on here all the time.

Slovak Captain Samuel Knazko does indeed return for tonight. He is paired with Marko Stacha. That is a big help for SVK. Also reunited for tonight, the dynamic trio: Chromiak - Myklukha - Slafkovský. Slovakia decides to go with an older lineup, 17 year-old defender Simon Bečár and 16 year-old forward Filip Filip Mešár are our healthy scratches.

I don’t like this coaching. You can say it almost worked, but that’s besides the point. There’s no reason plugs who can’t play hockey should be in the lineup instead of real prospects. Slovakia was always going to lose this game either way. To act like it’s a sporting decision would have me upset if I was a Slovakian. I don’t accept that the plugs would be better than the young prospects. Even if both were equally bad, it’s still going to help the younger prospects develop in the future to have played a game like this.

Simon Latkoczy may very well be the best goaltender in this tournament...so 9 goals against would require a very very bad night from him or the team in front of him...unlikely.

My money is on a low scoring affair here. There's the off chance of another casual Slovak game but I expect them to be ready for a quarter final. I think all the posters predicting 6+ goals for the US are out to lunch.

The best goalie in the tournament wasn’t drafted when there are two top 15 picks playing? Highly unlikely. He played really well, but that’s a huge stretch to call him the best in arguably the best crop of goaltenders we’ve seen at this tournament in a long time.
