Gonna add my two cents and then let it go.

Was Scott Howson deserving of all the vitriol that was heaped upon him? No, I don't think so.

He made some mistakes and he did some good things. He has left the franchise in better shape than he found it.

The hockey operations has new people in charge and is moving on.

As am I.

I agree with this. Howson seem to win most of his trades, drafted well aside from Filatov, and has brought an abundance of defensive depth. What brought him down is Steve Mason, and the fact he kept depending on him to return to his rookie year play. If Bob was not brought in this year, we would be having the same result, as the past couple years, but with more effort being shown . To his defense, the orginization brought him in as a rookie Gm, and aside from Hitch being here for a bit, we had absolutely no other hockey guys in our front office, aside from him, this falls on ownership. I'm not trying to make excuses, it was time for him to go, but I think Jarmo will benefit from alot of Howson's moves, as well as now having a strong front office. Jd brings instant credibility, and I think it will be easier to attract free agents as well.

I doubt Jarmo and JD are going into the Lockerroom and holding guns to everyone's head to play better, but its much like the bump when a new coach comes aboard. These players KNOW they are auditioning for their jobs. I hope Richards has been instilling in there a mentality that they all are, including him. Where's guy with recently signed LTC could possibly float for weeks or a month or two at a time with management that had signed the deal (therefore being one of "their" players), you now have to bring it each night to avoid the gaze of new management.

Keith, I like your whole post except for this part. I just can't see that accountability to the front office has changed much.

Aside from player quality and coaching, there are a few intangibles that can help explain our success that come to mind frequently:

1. New leaders growing in the absence of Nash. (You covered this well.)

2. "We will never be outworked" -JD

3. New start. The players are mostly new from the start of last year, and you even have a new front office. Forget the past struggles and get to work.

Here's an interesting look at what we might expect to see from JK in future drafts, from someone who's followed him in past drafts:

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Chip...ap---and-what-it-means-for-Columbus/174/50167

Since I'm crazy busy with 2 classes and a 6 month old daughter, I decided to watch the whole hour of the behind-the-scenes look at the St. Louis Blues' 2007 draft that another poster kindly linked to

http://nhlwhiteboard.blogspot.ca/2013/02/jarmo-kekalainen-amateur-scouting-and.html

Jarmo features prominently in it and I'll say this- it doesn't sound like he'll be allergic to the idea of packaging one of the 3 first rounders if he thinks it will help him get a player he wants. The Blues had 3 first rounders in that draft (held in Columbus) and they ended up dealing quite a bit in the first round.

If you don't have any time like me, it's a good watch

Are we calling the Nash trade a win at this point? I know its still early, but at this point in time, how do you feel about it?

I'm going with a "marginal victory" at this point.

I haven't followed Rangers enough to say that Columbus had won that trade or 'is leading'.

Nash surely has helped them but they lost some depth that they weren't able to replace. Nash is one of their MVPs, I think.

But given the situation at the time, it's working well for us.

Seems like good trade for both teams.

Well it certainly isn't the robbery so many claimed it to be at first. It has every appearance of being a good trade both ways. The further development of Erixon and "who knows" with the first could tip the scales in the CBJ's favor.

One could argue that they got the short end of the stick in both draft-day deals.

The first was falling back from #9 to #13 and picking up #44 and #87 in the process. 13 was Lars Eller, 9 was Logan Couture.

The second was #24 and #70 to move up to #18. #24 was used by Calgary and became Mikael Backlund, #18 was Ian Cole.

I'd say its remarkable that we got as much value as we did given the circumstance: A player with a huge contract asks for a trade, and gives you a short list of where he'll go.

The fact that we are even talking about getting better value and calling it a "win" is amazing. Time will tell, but it's a possibility.

Yes but you hate it when we do that to Scott Howson's draft picks. :sarcasm:

I'll handle this one.

The deals listed above were on draft day and took place as the draft was progressing. Whoever was on the board at that point was known. By moving from #9 to #13, St. Louis missed out on:
9 - Logan Couture
10 - Keaton Ellerby (big deal)
11 - Brandon Sutter (meh)
12 - Ryan McDonagh

Howson made draft-day deals involving first-rounders. They are:
2008 - #19 and #67 to Philadelphia for RJ Umberger and #118
2009 - #16 and #77 to NY Islanders for #26, #37, #62, and #92. This was followed by #26 and #37 to Anaheim for #21 (John Moore). #62 and #92 were sent back to NY Islanders for #56 (Kevin Lynch).

Compare away.

Thanks for that, really interesting. Good to see that JK is aggressive at the draft. My biggest complaint in prior years has been that we never made moves at the draft, it always seemed like we were passive at the draft going after our secondary guy instead of paying the price to get "our guy".

In 2008 he could have used the 19th pick for a guy name of Eberle & at 67 he could have gone "off the board" and picked Adam Henrique -just sayin . (and trying to instigate a bit of impish fun).

In that case, Viqsi wouldn't be able to troll EDM fans asking for RyJo that price for him is Jordan Eberle.

I'm going with a "marginal victory" at this point.

Rick Nash was sure offense (when he decided he wanted to be fully engaged, and thats been.... hit or miss, to put it lightly, the last few seasons)

And thats it from my vantage point of the last 3 seasons. I can't speak to how "engaged" Nash has looked for the Rangers this season outside of his stat line (i've only watched a few Rangers games). Rick Nash has 25 points.

Dubinsky, Anisimov and Erixon have a total of 23 points on the season. All have been of exemplarly character thus far this season, with Dubinsky and Anisimov already being talked about as part of the leadership group moving forward.

Extrapolating the stats alone out a full season, the three players that came here could equate, points-wise, to one Rick Nash.

In that, the deal is most likely a wash.

Anything else anybody wants to compare in this deal is subjective to their own tastes.

That said, coupling Salary, years involved, flexability, effort, recent developments.... I don't see how this isn't a win right now.

We weren't getting another Rick Nash, and on the plus side, we haven't gotten another Rick Nash.

That and the guy I hoped to get with that pick (if we kept it) was the guy who did get picked there - Sbisa.

And then we got Moore the next year and I was all "Sbisa who?" ;)

That is a plus.

These guys I think, while as a trio tallying just less than Nash, have brought things that I don't think he brought. Which is a shame, since he was, you know, the captain.

When Nash brought it (gamer Nash), He might have been among the top five players in the game, problem was, we rarely saw that Nash starting with the post-playoff season.

In Hockey, more than many sports, Effort and Energy can negate Talent.

What this organization has gained from shipping Nash has been invaluable for the future.

Kudos to Scott Howson for getting real "Hockey players" back in the deal.

The problem for the CBJ is that they have played more games than most, and they have so many road games that just going .500 on the road won't get it. If they don't figure out how to win the majority on the road, then their fate is sealed.
