I give him a 9 game run to give him a taste and send him back to juniors. The kid's shown me enough to prove that he can play in the NHL. But there's no way I run a 19 year old 170lb kid for a full 82 games.

A lot of fans won't like it, but you gotta think long term with this kid. He can develop into a solid top 6 Center for us for a long time. But not if he's out with a concussion or a separated shoulder.....

Same old story with the Bruins. Scared to give young guys a shot while they sign away cap space on washed up veterans. I don't understand how other teams can get their young guns in right away and give them a shot while the Bruins bury them in the minors to develop for years and years. Beecher is 22 and has never been given a real opportunity. One of these seasons we just need to say here, this is your spot, go prove you deserve to stay instead of endlessly playing in Providence and given a look here and there with no real consistency to prove anything

Montgomery should get another chance, but I have soured on him, a direct result of his abysmal coaching when it mattered most in the playoffs.
I have soured on him too. Nothing to do with pre-season... well that's not true, I don't like their new system adjustments, I don't like this 1 man forecheck set up I'm seeing, I don't like that he hasn't adjusted his breakout from last year (teams are already reading it and picking off passes), I don't like that he's decided Frederic is a RW, I don't like that he's decided Poitras can't play some wing to break into the NHL if the C role is too much right off the bat... How's he going to handle Pasta wearing an A and mailing in the pre-season. Does that line up with the speeches given by Marchand and Neely on day 1? I don't know. I thought he had a terrible playoff (even when we were up) and it's made me look at him more critically since. I hope I'm wrong.

If we dont start the season with wins we will be in trouble. October is the easiest part of the season.

I haven't had a close look at the schedule. If it's easy early then gets harder, at least on paper, then that's probably not ideal. But it is what it is, and these things tend to even out eventually. If they're good enough down the track they'll get the job done regardless of the opponents. If not, well they'll have to sort that out at the time. No point looking too far ahead.

Yeah, great goal and shot block, he won 58% of his draws... but his line (which had two good defensive forwards on it) was hemmed in their own zone all game. They were outshot 1-9.

It's true, that line got destroyed in terms of possession and zone time, and the stats reflect that. I'm really unsure how much to pin that on Poitras. Marchand phones it in in most preseason games, and this is the second preseason in a row that Frederic has looked largely disinterested. You'd hope that Brad in particular would step it up to give his young center the best chance of making a good impression, but it didn't really much look that way.

So IDK. But regardless, Poitras' young, he's light, he's inexperienced at anything close to this level, and he's got a lot to learn in becoming an effective 200-foot NHL player. That's indisputable. But he's very skilled, he's smart and he seems a quick learner. Is that enough to take a shot on him now? As impressed as I am by him, I still lean towards it being a year too soon. We'll see.

The good…
Lucic’s offensive game.
Beecher’s complete game, scoring chances, 54% at the dot, PK
Grzelcyk. Strong game, as usual.
Poiitras compete level. He struggled defensively but had the goal of the game.
Lohrei played 25 minutes had a goal and was +1. He makes mistakes, but the good outweighs the bad.
JVR’s offense and potential fit with 18 & 88.

The bad…
Shattenkirk was horrible. Unforced turnovers, loose coverage, passes off the mark… yuck. Outshot 6-19.
Beecher’s 3v3 defense
Forbort’s unforced turnovers

The ugly…
Pastrnak’s leadership.
The Bruins 3on3 play.
The Bruins team play.

I went -observations

POITRAS

He should be an elite FO for career. He sets up so low and his hands are so quick - he’s like a gun fighter. He’s got leverage, smarts and hands.

If he stays up stick him between Marchand & DeBrusk

Get Coyle back on third line with Frederic (and Geekie)

ZACHA

He was very good - he’s flying and when Pastrnak gets to regular season they should be a top duo

ULLMARK

I sat at ice level behind him - he was fantastic. An average goalie gives up 10 easy

LOHREI

Sitting 2 periods behind him on defensive zone - my takeaway one of most impressive young defensemen I’ve ever seen (this coming from someone who was skeptical of the hype and would have flipped him and a 1 for Hanifin) I’ve seen him twice at that vantage and he’s must watch.

By this time next year I’ll be surprised if he’s not solidified in top 4 and a star wouldn’t surprise me

DEFENSE

Grzelcyk was great
Zboril was very good
The third pair was bad
Feel bad for Shattenkirk but he had a tough night
I get Forbort but if you can move him do it

My D is in no order and It’s young and my favorite group in the game
McAvoy
Carlo
Lindholm
Grzelcyk
Lohrei
Mitchell
Zboril

But they won’t do it

BEECHER

He’s got to be 4th line

Again skeptic/ even traded him in SIM league shows I put my money where mouth is - but he’s been impressive

Grow a bad ass beard abc start carving a niche and shoot higher

My lines with what I saw and know

Marchand - Poitras - DeBrusk (9 games)

JVR- Zacha - Pastrnak

Frederic- Coyle - Geekie

Lucic- Beecher - Lauko

Swing F - Heinen

Lohrei - McAvoy
Lindholm- Carlo
Grzelcyk-Shattenkirk (he’s making)
Zboril- Mitchell

Trade Forbort & waive Greer Boqvist Steen

Summary

Bruins G & D should be top 1-5 but that third pair is scary & doesn’t have to be

Monty should go back to last year line foundations

1. Marchand & DeBrusk
2. Zacha & Pastrnak
3. Frederic & Coyle

For a team with no prospects
Poitras
Beecher
Lohrei
Mitchell

All belong and look legit long career ahead of them

Pasta sure do t get paid for his defense
If he did, he would not get paid - or could end up owing money if you charged back for turnovers. I can think of two players who were one way players who were coached up into being highly effective two way players: Steve Yzerman and Rick Middleton - who I watched when he was NYR minor league property on the then Providence Reds. Nifty had 25 goals/-39 for the NYR in 75-76 and was traded to Boston and was never a minus player again. Why would we not want a complete player? Especially if you give him an A for his sweater. If I am not mistaken, the same was the case with Teemu Selanne after the year following his 76 goal rookie season when he had 25 goals but was a minus 23. (I know I will draw some fire for using +/-, but it is useful to consider - see Alex Ovechkin, 2013-14: 51 goals, -39. Not a complete player. No back check, floated near other blue line waiting for stretch passes. Local fans said it was not his job to play defense.)

Pasta's effort on the OT goal was hilarious. It's preseason so I don't care, but can you imagine if he had to go face Zdeno Chara in the lockerroom after that?
Or Bergy. I don’t think Bergeron lets that go without comment.

f***ing pathetic from Pastrnak. In regular season form already.
Pasta doesn't ever play D. If you expect Pasta to show defensive prowess every game you will be deeply disappointed.

I am also confident that Marchand had a conversation with him about effort but I'm not going to skewer him for a preseason game.

Based on this roster Pots, Pops and the Beech should all stay according to my friend TINA ( there is no alternative). Heinen was good last night and should stick around too she said. Pasta should be reminded every so often that yes, you do actually play hockey for money now. Stay after practice for some one on one drills until you can get it right.

Heinen again was very good - I don’t expect most people to understand this. Looking around at so many people during actual play looking at their phone I’m assuming it’s worse at home unless it’s Fantasy points how yah gonna know

Lot of subtle plays correct decisions- hopefully Monty doesn’t mess this up

Two guys who had very strong camps are Mitchell & Heinen so hopefully he has the final call on them

A few opinions with the preseason all but over...

Poitras - It's very close, but I think he proceeds to a 9 game tryout. Everything is there except strength. He got outmuscled a lot last night when he went up against genuine NHL players, but man does he fight and battle. Skill and hockey sense are not even a question. FWIW, I would understand and support a decision to return him to the OHL now.

Lohrei - I want him on the Bruins, but for depth preservation purposes, I would start him in Providence. Usually there is an injury sooner rather than later. One way or the other I;d have him in Boston by Thanksgiving.

Mitchell - I wouldn't waive him. Maybe give Shattenkirk the start, but with a real short rope. This guy looked good and plays with fire.

Beecher - Absolutely the 4th line center with Lauko and Lucic. Not question about this one for me.

Heinen - If Poitras makes the team, carry him on the PTO until an injury opens up a spot. If Poitras is returned, I like Heinen on the third line with Geekie and Frederic. I think he outplayed Boqvist.

Zboril - It's a crossroads for sure. I am ok waiving him though. He just can't seem to put it all together on a consistent basis.

I don't care what happens with Brown and Greer
