Anyway I'd try to move Holden and go with these 7 keeping in mind one of them is Staal who can't go to Hartford:

McDonagh, Shattenkirk, Skjei, Smith, Staal and 2 of Pionk, DeAngelo, Graves.

I like this if AV will make Staal the #7. I don't want to keep any of those guys up to have them sit 50% of the games. If Staal is going to be pressboxed I'm on board with this. If Staal is going to play regularly, just keep Holden as the #7 so whichever kid isn't playing can get minutes in Hartford.

I'm anticipating:

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo
Holden

I'd love to see:

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - DeAngelo
Smith - Pionk
Staal

At this point I don't see any way DeAngelo doesn't make the team

I bet you they'll start the season with Holden And DeAngelo rotating at the 6 spot

Graves and Pionk are the top pairing in Hartford, and if one of them takes a big step forward, call em up and trade Holden

Between our last exhibition game and the start of the season I'd be looking at moving Holden for a serviceable 3rd line quality wing. He's worth that and the Rangers could use a little more depth at forward.

First gotta release or trade Holden.

All I'm saying though is that I wouldn't be shocked if Kampfer made the team. No one's talking about him, but AV likes him, and its weird that he's still in this camp over Bereglazov, which makes me think he still has a chance to make the team.
Nope Bear Gloves just wasn't that good. Simple as that. ADA will be getting top6 mins regularly. Pionk will be very good in the A and holden will be in the box. Kampfer will be sent down after the game.

I'd love to see:

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - DeAngelo
Smith - Pionk
Staal

This would be an ideal defense but will never happen haha

I remember reading somewhere that the Rangers long term hope was DeAngelo takes the next step and meshes with Skjei to create a solid second pairing

Smith at 4.3 million for a third pairing guy is an issue but they'll cross that bridge when they get there I guess

I dunno. Depends on how they view the two 1st rounders, and when they think Fast is coming back. If they're genuinely going to give one or both of the kids at least the nine games and Fast is on schedule, it might make a lot more sense to move him for the best pick(s) you can get.

I'm afraid there's not much we can do with the Staal situation. He'll be on the team. I suspect Staal will be platooned with the young guys at least at the beginning of the year. The more Marc plays like crap the less he'll play but he'll have to play like crap--until then he'll probably be in the lineup most of the time.

I wouldn't count Graves out if two rookies make the team. Pionk and DeAngelo both right handed defensemen with similar games and with Shattenkirk the other right D--who like Pionk and DeAngelo is very offensive minded. Graves provides something a bit different but moves the puck well enough.

I was thinking for draft picks too. It depends I suppose. If Matt Puempel is going to be a regular on your 4th line--I'm not sure the forward depth is that great. But a mid to late 2nd--at worst an early 3rd and a + is what I'd want for Holden.

Agreed, rather have a bit of cap space and the pick. We'll find the depth if we need it.

It's less of an issue when he's a top pairing penalty killer for us, which he is likely to be. I don't think DeAngelo or Shattenkirk will be asked to do much in that department.

Skjei will have to take on some PK responsibility this year however. He had very little of that last season.

McDonagh's and Skjei's fantasy owners are in for some disappointment this season if DeAngelo sticks with the big club.

Oh I agree, I don't think Smith will be an issue this season

In the future it could be though if all these young defensemen pan out

But today, Smith is a nice young man and I'm glad to have him
