Buch isn't a line driver, ideally, he's a line complementer.

Put him with guys with skill that are willing to open up space and he'll be much more comfortable.

Lindgren, as always, looked like a decent potential 3rd pairing guy. Smaller Sauer, keeps to the fundamentals, and doesn't take risks. Hopefully he gets his chance.

This game hardly serves as a reality check when 2 top 6 forwards were playing and 1 top 6 dman was playing. Let’s relax on that talk Jesus.

However what scares me and has scared me for a few years now is hank Lundqvist basically is the hockey equivalent of Eli Manning at this point. He’s going to hurt us. He couldn’t make a save tonight. Which is becoming par for the course. Especially early.

I believe we will get there, we have a ton of talent and a legit franchise player prospect. But it’ll probably take a little longer than some of the more optimistic projections. That’s not a bad thing. If anything, I’d say it’s normal.

But to your point, I am reminded of something Uncle Larry said a while back. He talked about the concept of a rebuild being a hell of a lot of more digestible than the reality of living through one.

Uncle Larry most certainly had it right.

I would’ve liked to have seen a bit more from the 7 guys who played tonight and are likely to be in our regular lineup - including the guy slated to get the first crack at the top RW spot, the guy we’re hoping can center our second line, and the aging vet who, for better or worse, will be our starting goalie.

Not necessarily world-beating dominance, but more than what I saw.
Basically what I saw....but put much nicer than i would have.

I get it's a concern but Henrik has always looked rusty and pretty terrible every preseason. I wouldn't judge how he may perform based on what you saw tonight or what you may see the rest of the preseason. I'll be concerned with him once the games actually matter.

Even in his good years Lundqvist would often suck in the preseason and often at the start of the season. I don’t take anything away from his play tonight.

I place more emphasis on how he had looked the past couple of years and that he can’t carry a team like he used to and the D likely won’t be good enough to carry him. I’d be more concerned if this was a true contender year but I don’t expect them to make the playoffs. Maybe hang around as a bubble team for a bit but this is more a transition year in my mind including at goaltending

Just watching the replay now. Man, Staal pisses me off. I can see now that he definitely “mentored” Pionk to just give possession away, even when no one is around you. And f*** Taylor Hall’s stupid face.

There should be an image like this at the top of every GDT this year to remind people to temper their expectations despite the fact that some of Gorton's moves this summer appeared to "accelerate" the rebuild. It's still a long term project. Avoid the temptation of the quick fix.

This game serves as a reality check that this team still has some major holes and growing to do.

It’s going to take a bit of time, despite the desire to be closer to the more enjoyable side of things.
I usually agree with you on most things, but I will respectfully disagree here. Buchnevich, Chytil, Namestnikov, Hank (who usually starts off slow), and Staal (enough said) were the only established regulars. The rest of the lineup consisted of Howden, AHLers, and prospects who are still pretty early in their development and don’t have high ceilings.

Compare the rosters of tonight’s game. I agree that it’s still a work in progress, but our roster was a joke.

I commented knowing that:

We’re still playing against the Devils and not a powerhouse

Other teams lineups are also going to get better, tighter and less rusty

Staal, Skjei, and company are still going to struggle against a lot of offenses

Lundqvist is still 37

Our forward group is still incredibly young

We still have a lot of unanswered questions at center

Trouba is not going to have nearly the support he had in Winnipeg’s lineup

Even if young talent takes significant steps forward, that there’s an ebb and flow to their development

That time is still going to be a major factor in traversing the road ahead of us, and that hasn’t changed despite our desire for it not to be.

With all due respect my responses:

I'm responding to the above not the general argument about how strong this team is.

1) What does that have to do with anything if we're icing nowhere close this team in the regular season? This is literally almost a different team. You might as well complain about some other team losing to a bad Devils team. And the Devils played their two best players while we sat probably our top 5 best players, at least.

2) Skjei didn't play tonight, so tonight's performance is not relevant. Staal, fine.

3) Fine on this point about Lundqvist though once again his performance today was behind a team that will barely resemble the team he'll play behind.

4) That's fair, but once again, not overly relevant to this game. Most of these guys won't even play and those that will other than maybe Buch and Chytil will be depth guys.

5) That's fair, but their #1 center and probably second-best player (Kakko is young) didn't play this game.

6) Trouba didn't even play this game.

7) Ok, but see #4.

Basically, your post was looking at the worst-case scenario and every issue with the team and ignoring all the positives. I get that you were building a case for an argument you made but reading that you'd think we were a bottom of the barrel team. Also, tonight's game wasn't evidence for any of those things other than maybe Staal and Lundqvist.

Not for nothing but Lundqvist has always looked like ass in the preseason and early in the regular season, even back in his prime. Not saying he's going to be good or bad this year necessarily but I do think we should wait past the first few games of preseason to start analyzing him.

Any bad luck with injuries, or the defense repeating its performance from last year, or our goalies not playing well, or our kids not coming along as quickly as we'd hope and we will certainly be among the basement dwellers. A lot has to go right for this team to stay out of the basement. This doesn't even consider trading out expiring UFAs like Kreider, Namestnikov, Fast, and even Strome.

Preseason with our B team, am I missing something?

I'd say you missed nothing and summed things up nicely.

I would never put myself anywhere near "Most Knowledgeable Fan" territory, but going into a new season with two nice additions (Panarin & Trouba) and possibly the most talented rookie in franchise history (Kakko) seems like a nice place to be. Add to that one of the more talent-laden pipelines any of us has ever seen.

As ever with Ranger fans, young or old, level headed or loony, we seem to suffer a common plight:

We're waiting for our team to fail.

I refuse to let a couple of pre-season games overweighted by aging vets trying to scrape off the rust or scrubs who will never rise beyond the AHL dampen what was probably the best offseason in franchise history.

Rebuilds are a difficult process.

Water is wet.

Get on with it.

Ok, let's put this behind us, and get ready for Philly tonight. A couple of games under our belt, I expect an improved effort.

Other than injuries I think this team's floor is mediocre, not awful.

This. The team is projected to be bad. Why get your hopes up? Ask yourself: how many players on this roster are certified good NHLers? Maybe 1/3? That doesn't mean it can't be a fun season; There's a ton to look forward to.

IMO this is not far off the mark: Team Line Combinations

How did Chytil and Howden look?

I still feel Howden or Lias will be the better suited for that 2C spot... to start the year.

The Rangers regulars were meh tonight. I liked what I saw out of Tarmo, he has, some skill. I hope he gets a longer look. It looks like he needs more seasoning but still.

Keane took a beating on the punk #20' goal. He got hit hard on his side, was holding his head like he got his bell rung and Hank was blasting him. Lol

If Morrow plays anymore hockey with the Rangers, I am going to change the M to an S, that's what we will all feel when he skates.

I said I was going to get blind drunk rather than watch the game looking at the lineup, it was about as expected...... I so miss hockey but that was an awful game.

I would think there are more than a few cuts coming. I want to see a more serious version of the team than tonight's. I think the power play is going to be an equalizer for the lack of depth equation.
