everyone seems to suck with Staal.

seriously.

Think back..when was teh last time someone played with staal and looked great?

Anton Stralman.

That was a long friggin time ago.

I dont blame Gilmour as much tbh...i just dont know if he sucks or if hes just catching the stench from Staal.

Staal was noticeably awful tonight.

Disagree. Staal was bad, but it was standard, contained Staal bad. Gilmour was out of position, or knocked off the puck, or simply slow to chase SO many times in the D-zone. I was a fan last preseason, but he's a small Dman who has decent offensive skills that are completely undermined by his woeful defensive skills.

Great game today imo here's what I thought. for anyone who wasn't able to see the game hope this helps

Gilmour is ****ing terrible and I almost threw up when I saw him out there in OT
Staal is still terrible
LA is extremely intelligent when it comes to playing hockey. I would like to see him play with better line mates and he given an offensive role next game centering offensive players, he has a wicked shot as well
Chytil is a god and I remember being happy we drafted him then, and I'm even happier now. He has every tool you can ask for in a player and has brains to go along with it, add in the fact he just turned 18 we can have a real player on our hands
Hayes+Vesey- I know everyone LOVES to **** on these two but they were outstanding tonight, Vesey looks comfortable with the puck and more dynamic too.
Shatty- great game by him, he's a dark horse for the most points for us this year
Georgiev- didn't like what I saw and I wasn't entirely comfortable with him out there, looks a bit nervous and lost, it is his first game though so I'm not going to blame him a lot for that. I do think he has a little potential in him to at least to become a solid backup
Gropp/Catenacci/Pedrie-useless/useless/meh he was ok in the beginning though
Again, Staal is still terrible
So is Gilmour
Zucc is also a god
Smith was ok nothing great but that's just his game, still solid
Skjei looked a bit off in the beginning but picked it up a bit later in the game
Kreider looked amazing out there, wouldn't be surprised to see him him 60 points this year
DD was amazing. I didn't expect this at all, he was all over the place in a good way
Tambellini was ok
Desjardins wasn't good at all which is a bummer for me, I really liked this PTO and hoped he could return to his form from before last year
Puempel wasn't good, good fight though
Hank looked off
I wouldn't mind giving Carey another game, I thought last game he was solid

Staal was noticeably awful tonight.

Gilly was bad... I wouldn't isolate Marc for that... Marc had to cover because of Gilly's bad positioning... What I will say about Staal is:

He reaches, he whacks, and he pokes... and in this day and age, he needs to take ownership of the puck, and transition... all that does is break up a rush to create a controlled possession against... or rest a cycle.. or create a 2nd chance..

That's his issue... It's not a Girardi thing where the legs just fell off.. and he'd just chip it up the wall.. Staal doesn't do much other than flail and fail.

If you look at the play of the D in game 1 versus 2... the latter had way more mistakes and far less control due to:

Bad positioning

Slow transitions

Weak Support

Weak breakout passes

Staal was in the middle of a lot of that. As was Gilmour. As was Pedrie.

You had a guy like Smith that just made a number of solid plays... but he at least engaged in the puck battle, won it, and got it out of trouble. Even if he couldn't counter.

Marc doesn't really do that. And to your point... hasn't done that since Stralman left. Marc needs a safety valve at this point.

I know the chances of this roster happening are really low and it would be dumb to rush Chytil and LA but wow not only do they not look out of place, they look GOOD.

Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Nash Chytil Zuccarello
Miller Hayes Vesey
Grabner Desharnais Puempel
Fast on IR

McDonagh Shattenkirk
Skjei DeAngelo
Smith Pionk
Holden

Never going to happen lol but it would be my dream to see this roster.

I want this lineup so bad if Chytil continues to play like this in pre season. I'd rather have both him and LA develop one more year though but if Chytil continues his play I don't see how he wouldn't start for us when the regular season rolls around. I wish we had signed Chiasson and had him on the 4th line until Fast came back, I really don't like Puempel too much, he's just meh.

I was at the game and these are my thoughts on every player, to the T. I don't disagree with one word and especially agree that I'd like to see Andersson between better wingers if we're seriously considering him making the team.

If there plan is to have LA be a checker, then just send the kid to Europe. Don't stifle his offensive potential by shoehorning him into a defensive role in his rookie season, whether it be at the NHL or AHL level. Go let him light it up with Dahlin in Frolunda.

I agree with this. He needs to be afforded a similar opportunity that Chytil was given tonight. LA seemed the more likely of the two to stick around and if that's the case he should have a game where he gets the choice linemates and ample PP time. If he stays it should be on a 3rd line with guys like Miller and Grabner rather than on a 4th with guys like Fast/Puempel/Desjardins.

One other thing--I think if the Rangers are contemplating keeping Andersson and/or Chytil they should make sure they play with good players---not be 4th liners/part time players. They're going to have to live with all the growing pains that come with that too. Based on what I've seen so far either one of them looks pretty damn good and at least very very close.

Would be interesting if they stuck with Miller at C or moved him back to wing to accommodate them...or maybe moved someone like Chytil to the wing instead. For some reason I get the impression he plays a bit more of a winger game than center. Could be wrong.

Yeah I looked, theyÂ’re also complaining about Shattenkirk

They can have fun with their Pionk knockoff aka Butcher and the rest of the trash defensemen on the team save for Severson

Wait why are they complaining about Shattenkirk? Because he...played well?

On the point that Mikos makes about the face-offs--the Rangers need to figure that one out. It ain't that hard.

I mean, on the plus side every team is going through this right now, not just the Rangers. You could also see guys like Andersson who have never played NHL hockey getting frustrated because the rules being applied are not consistent across any other kind of hockey.

I think Georgiev is still adjusting to the different rinks and probably working with Allaire. He's AHL bound anyways. Seemed alright but a little jumpy.

What I will say about Staal is:

This is a real good point. Staal just doesn't have much possession in his game. Also that sliding knee block out of the picture on the Devils first goal...

I'd agree it might be best to send Lias back to Sweden but iirc he's likely to have a 3rd line role there as well...he's not just going to jump in and be their top line center

I like the quote noting Zucc's pause like he had to think about how he was going to report that he told a rookie to go buckwild

Hey, it worked well for Kreider in that first playoff run.

Also have to give credit to Daneyko. He did a good job of being neutral, and he was still very pleasant even when pumping up the Devils.

Allow me to reiterate that Kreider is love, Kreider is life, Kreider is everything.

And he looked fantastic with that A.

I missed the game. I know they play different positions but does Chytil have more upside than Buchnevich or anyone in our prospect pool for that matter?

It's hard to say with certainty off of one preseason game, but I saw a kid who looked like an elite talent, poised and creative and fit right in without a single noticeable flaw. It was just one game. It was preseason. Can he do it in real NHL games? Can he be consistent? No clue. I saw a kid who looked like he could be a 60-70 point top six center some day.

I noticed Desharnais, Hayes and Desjardins a lot tonight, and Kreider of course. Chytil was impressive, Pedrie had a lot of effort. Shattenkirk was not at all out of position from what I saw. Gilmour a bit but he played well enough.

Uh... they're not actually going to call faceoff penalties like this during meaningful games, right?

Nice finish there for the OT goal. Hopefully he scores ~20ish in the AHL this year - that'd be an amazing year for an 18 yr old.

Tough to say based off of one preseason game but I think Chytil probably has the highest upside of any young player in the organization right now.

Thinking of Buch, Chytil actually looked better to me than Buch did last preseason. And he only just turned 18. Pretty crazy.

Andersson was good too, he was playing with crap linemates but he was effective in a depth role. He also made that play in OT deft pass to Tambellini that drew the penalty that lead to the GWG.

Very happy with Chytil and Andersson and I think both have a legitimate shot to make the team, even if they don't both are definitely going to be big players for this organization for years to come.

Other thoughts:

Desharnais was good, I don't mind him as a bottom 6 center who can play PP.

People are making Staal out to be a disaster but let's be honest Gilmour was the worst player on the ice for either team and Staal was anchored to him. I wanna see Staal playing with DeAngelo and Pionk before writing him off.

Desjardins is cooked, he should be cut soon.

Puempel is fine as a 13th or 14th forward but I don't see him bringing much to the table in the top 12. I would rather keep Chytil and/or Andersson over him.

Shattenkirk is awesome. He's fantastic on the PP but he's no slouch defensively. I said over the summer people expecting him to be Yandle 2.0 (no slight, I love Yandle but Shatty is better in the D zone) were wrong. Shatty has great gap control, he's a smooth skater and has great vision. He has really good positioning in the D zone plays gritty down there as well. Can't wait to see him with Mac.

Kreider, Zucc, Vesey, Hayes, Skjei and Smith all looked good, but that's to be expected.

Staal was getting beat to loose pucks and space all night long. No partner is going to help him fix that. He will only anchor those young kids by forcing them to do all the work; the skating, the retrieving.

Desharnais looks like a very effective player.

Granted, Des is an NHL player so he should look effective against preseason rosters that have a smattering of non-NHL'ers. (says a ****ing ton about Marc Staal, doesn't it?)

But I'm optimistic.
