Fox was the best player on the ice. Man is he good. DeAngelo is a complete moron. Enjoy the third pair after finally beating out pionk this is like taking on a real challenge.

Kakko was the second best player on the ice. Of course he got hurt as did panarin welcome to the Rangers boys. It’s never easy.

Georgiev woof. The goaltending was the difference tonight. I don’t worry about him though he’ll be fine. Shesterkin is getting better good sign. Not great but getting better lately.

Love Trouba. Love the big shot and the simple approach to playing the top of the key. Skjei was not great but hardly as bad as he’s being made out to be here. The contract he got was not good. He’s not a top pairing dman. Just isn’t. He’s a second pair guy at best.

Mika was flying

Kreider is a freak athlete. Anyone who thinks he’s slowing down anytime soon is nuts. He’s getting faster and stronger. He could probably be a tight end for the patriots right now and win a super bowl. I’d keep him

Kravtsov looks like he could use a couple months in the A. Gorton needs to find a buyer for namestnikov in the mean time.

Lias as I said has noticeably improved his skating. I still don’t see the offensive upside but he banged home a goal in front where he’s fearless and has that poise I’ve talked about. That should be his bread and butter. We’ll see how he progresses here now that he at least has turned himself into a pro athlete.

Hajek was awesome

Poised breakout and Staal should never be used in the same sentence.

See, this is the hyperbole BS that just pisses me off. Staal was never going to be Erik Karlsson, but when he was younger and before his injuries, he really could break out with the puck. He was a damn good defenseman before all these injuries took their toll.

Yup I saw the play when it happened...just didn't think it was that bad.

Well looks like when I'm at the game in Philly on Saturday, this probably kills my chances of seeing Panarin for sure and maybe Kakko too....dangit.

All in all for what just might have been the most anticipated preseason game I can ever recall, it lived up to the hype. Fun game, a bit ticked with the Bread and Kakko boo boo's but overall, I think we are in for a heck of a fun season.

I'm with @jas, if he defense can even play average to a little better than that, I think we'll have enough offense for sure and probably goaltending to contend for one of those last playoff spots.

After over decade of making long runs in the playoffs and not having made it for past two years, I'm jonesing for some meaningful March/April hockey again...looks like we got a pretty decent shot at some.
Nah. You'll catch them likely. They're not serious.

First preseason game. Lias's skating looked much improved and he looked good overall which is encouraging, Fox is NHL ready. Kakko looks like a veteran already. PP1 is awesome. Trouba is good. Panarin is most likely fine, probably just a little tweak and he came out bc it's preseason and they're being cautious. Kakko looked like he hit his knee or hip when he twisted down making that pass from behind the net late, hopefully he's fine.

Let's all remember it was just the first preseason game though. Let's not jump to conclusions.

It's fun watching the kids but no way is this a playoff team yet ^^

Probably not, but you never know.

A lot depends on goaltending, and how quickly the prospects on defense grow and improve.

Fox looks like he's going to be a Corsi champion with his breakout pass ability. As long as he doesn't get plastered by Ton Wilson that is.

Obviously it’s the preseason but I’d wager a guess Gorton is going to sell high on Skjei before the rest of the league figures out he’s not so good

He did not look good tonight. And usually he’s just average otherwise

I’m sure the Rangers would love for a guy like Hajek to really step up and stake his claim.

The challenge, despite all of the jokes about us having an army of LHDs, is that the best of the bunch is arguably still a season away and the crop that is closest to challenging for jobs doesn’t necessarily scream “hand over the keys, we’re driving.”

Despite the numbers, I’ve never quite been as content with our left side as some.

My expectation is that this isn’t a playoff team.

If they make it, great.

But I’ll be satisfied with a finish in the 8-12 draft range, and substantial progress from the kids and the players who have long-term futures here.

Staal, Smith, and others are what they are, and there will be a number of vets who will undoubtedly leave me wanting more, but progress for our kids will be essential and welcome.

Hell, top that off with another lottery win, and I can live through this season without too much long-term frustration.

I knew last year would be tough. I think there will be a lot more to enjoy this season, but, this is nowhere near a complete picture. There were quite a few things that pleased me - seeing Andersson being more assertive, watching Kakko’s ability to dominate, watching Kravtsov get better as the game moved along, seeing Zibanejad and Kreider provide a veteran presence, seeing the Hajek-Fox pairing fit like a glove.

But, Brady Skjei cannot be giving Marc Staal and Brendan Smith competition for most incompetent LD. Skjei was going to be fine sliding in behind McDonagh as the 2nd LD. But he has been brutally exposed. And, given the depth at LD in the organization, with two prize jewels in Miller and Robertson on the way, I remain convinced he’s not long for this franchise.

I think the 8-10 range is still the likely outcome for this team. There are going to be a lot more growing pains to come.

Is it just me or has the universe just thrown us all a dose of you really can’t bank or rely on anything if your a sports fan.

Are we not sitting here praying that panarin and kakko haven’t gotten some sort of csreer debilitating injury and thrown our assumed future and ‘fandom’ substance into the Knicks realm

I'm concerned a bit as I mentioned in a few posts. But from what I saw and from what some of the guys have said, these don't appear to be anything to worry about. Not sure if your being factious or kidding around but I don't have ANY fear whatsover that these Kakko and Panarin injuries are anything but a couple of "boo boo's" and that they will be fine.

Relax brother...Rangers are NOT the Knicks or the Jets thank god

Did you see that one play in the last 5 minutes of the game when Kakko was behind the net in the offensive zone? I rarely even see hands moving that fast from established superstars in the league. He’s absurd.

I'm still trying to figure out what he does well. Hes a good skater but cant play PP etc..

McKegg is going to make this team, and it’s because he’s the type of player coaches love.
Yeah McKegg showed why he’s either on our NhL roster when waivers ends or someone else’s

Lias
Hajek
Fox
Nieves
Kravtsov
Haley
Mckegg

It’s one game and I hope it’s the last. The rangers need to get kakko the puck on the PP when he’s stationed up on the circle and having the puck on on the opposite side allows him to inch in a bit. He needs to get that shoot at least once or twice every PP. it’s better if it’s not the 1st and 4/5 options, but you have to give him at least two cracks at that shot per PP. his teammates will also learn to get him the puck ASAP upon entering the zone and then driving the net. He’s almost impossible to take the puck away from. So you get him the puck at that point and then head for the net or whatever set routes the coaches want his linemates to take when kakko gets it in that situation, and I’m telling you that kid will put up a point per game before two many seasons (with many more assists then the pundits were projecting for him)

He's a pretty good penalty killer. He went full space cadet in this one tonight but he's better than this.

If there is any push from people in Hartford, I wouldn't be opposed to moving him. I think hes one of the few guys on this roster we have who would be over valued in this league.

The power play looked awesome. 1st line was great. McKegg looked really good. Ditto Shesterkin. Fox looked really good.
One of the problems was we were chasing the game the entire night.
Agreed.

But while many would look at the individual efforts, I rather comment on the team effort. Rangers got out played defensively. We didn't have any quality chances 5 on 5. NJ had three men back everytime we entered the offensive zone. They also out numbered us down low in board battles. They blocked a lot of shots and were also able to come out of their end more cleanly than us. We need to take a page from their effort.

Our forecheck was lacking all night except for that time McKegg forced a turnover that led to that open-netter.

Trouba and Skjei did not look good defending, Anderson looked lost on the PK, and overall there wasn't much support or strength in numbers in defending.

It's only one game, but they were badly outplayed defensively.
