A bit worried that Quinn trotted out 4 LH shots on the top PP unit though, where was Meskanen? The guys on top of the circles always need to have their sticks pointing to the middle on the PP.

Anyway, PP units should be:

Kreider
Zibanejad-Buchnevich-Zuccarello
Shattenkirk

and

Andersson
Meskanen-(2 of Hayes/Chytil/Spooner)
DeAngelo

I'd swap Buch and Zuke, Buch has the better shot of the two and Zuke is good in tight spaces. Pretty much agree on the rest though.

I heard during the broadcast that they've practiced the PP all of 15 minutes so far. I wouldn't be concerned with whatever we saw out of the PP last night.

Meskanen is not an NHLer yet, don’t be fooled by a decent (not great) showing in a preseason game. Though he looked on a completely different level last night compared to Lindqvist.

How did DeAngelo get 27 votes? He was awful as usual. It's amazing how many times this imbecile makes a pass down the center of the ice from behind his net. You would think the dope would have figured out that is a low percentage play that usually results in a turnover. On a side note, another terrible, hack article from Brooks. This time on Andersson. Sorry Larry. Only buffoons are disappointed when an 18 year old doesn't make the NHL. Lord, let this senile clown retire already.

Buchnevich is lazy. Unless he changes that, he will never be a big time player. Andersson the other hand is always in the right place. His hockey sense is off the charts. Listening to the nonsense about his game on here for months was laughable at best.

Buchnevich with a super lazy goal and assist on the game winner.

What a dog of a performance

Oh, I'm not penciling in Meskanen in our regular NHL lineup (which I admit, I kind of did in that post). But like Lettieri, if he is in he must be at the left circle of our PP2 unit.

That spot should go to, in order: Meskanen, Lettieri, Lindqvist, Pionk, Fast - where the first three could potentially (likely even?) all be out of the regular lineup.

I'd staal and pionk is gonna be a thing this year...we're in for a hurting.

And it's not because of pionk.

Staal needs someone who can keep the puck in the other teams zone for long stretches...I don't think pionk is that guy.

Only got the first..listened to the 2nd and some of the 3rd while driving and changing in the locker room. Sounds like DeAngelo got better.

Heard lias' name a lot so he musta been the p.o.t.g.

Only disappointment was the lack of hard hitting....with Quinn I was expecting a more physical approach and didn't really get it here...1 game does not a career make tho. Lotsa time

For those who didn’t watch the game, here’s some thoughts

DeAngelo was our best dman honestly. Played really well but I don’t think he’ll get a spot this year
Claesson was meh. Don’t really like him (never really have either) but he was somewhat physical
McLeod sucks. I pretty much blame him for our first goal against
Lias was our best player easily
Georgiev needs to work on rebound control a lot
Gettinger is a force on the forecheck. Now he just needs to learn how to play defense
Pionk was meh other than his goal
Staal unfortunately was Staal
Buchnevich wasn’t exactly noticeable but he did have that rocket goal and a nifty assist on Pionk’s goal
Lindgren was also meh
Meksanen was decent, didn’t really do too much
Hayes was a defensive beast that game and actually used his size to his advantage for once
Kreider just toyed with everyone
Schneider is useless, don’t even know why we gave him a chance. On his chance from ADA’s long pass, his body movement made it so clear he was going five hole all the way. He doesn’t really do anything and he was terrible last year preseason too.

O'Gara and Meskanen had good games. I was actually pretty surprised at how well O'Gara played. He was better than both Claesson and Staal, in my opinion.

Buch and Lias were great. Hayes looked lazy.
Hayes has a natural tendency to look like that. Many players arent in "game shape" and he just comes off like that. Imo lets face it, its not the PO's and knows he has a spot regardless.

My votes were for Buch and Lias(obvious) and my surprise answer was Schneider. His speed was evident, but man he needs to put the puck in the net when his speed affords him that. Reminds me of early Kreids.

Agree that O'gara played well, and Meskanen looks very intriguing thus far.

It’s probably gonna be 25-30 games at least before we see a noticeable change in play/mindset.

Quinn's gotta coach the AV outta these guys. Don’t happen overnight.

The team got better as the game went along, although they didn’t do a ton 5v5.

Pretty much all of the guys fighting for spots did well, except for Linqvist and Nieves. Linqvist didn’t see much time, but it’s hard to justify giving time to a player who takes a penalty every other shift.

I thought DeAngelo had a shaky 1st, but got past it. Same with Pionk. I didn’t really see anything that made one stand out over the other, so if they’re fighting with each other for a spot, Quinn’s decision didn’t get any easier.

I’m not worried about the veterans. They didn’t have a great game, but a lot of veterans ramp up over the course of training camp because they don’t need to prove anything. Going all out also increases the risk of injuries, and who wants to get injured over something that’s already guaranteed?

Anyone who is complaining about how a vet, who has a spot completely locked down, played in preseason game 1 makes me think they haven't followed a preseason before. How an established player, with an already defined role on the team, does during the preseason has almost no bearing on what their year is going to look like.

They use it to get their timing and legs under them. No one is looking to go balls to the wall and risk an injury unless its to protect themselves or their teammates.

But he didn't.

He wasn't bad, but ADA was clearly the better player and looked dominant at times. I mean i guess if you just turned it on for the last 3 seconds and saw Pionks tap in OT winner then I could see how you thought he was the better player.

All things being equal between the 2 "just for last nights game", had it been ADA tapping in that winner, he would have been unanimously better than Pionk. ADA was much more noticeable, but that doesnt mean Pionk wasnt good. We need stability in the dzone and maybe Pionk provided that? I mean he was with Marc a great deal, right? And c'mon guys get real......it was only their 1st game.

This is why I say 6 games really isnt enough to fully evaluate what you have. What if a player has a mild flu and cannot be 100%? Would a player hide that or a mild injury for fear of NOT playing?

Whoa hoss, slow your roll.
Buch might not be Jesper Fast, but he isn't lazy.
With regard to Lias, it isn't too far fetched for fans to be concerned. Let's face it, last night was the best he has looked.

I see a lot of people sleeping on Lindgren. I was very impressed with his poise with and without the puck. I look forward to seeing him more this preseason.

He looked calm and composed and his game will naturally go under the radar when he is effective. He looks like a new Kevin Klein and that is a very valuable player.

Hot takes, come get your hot takes here!

Good:

Lias - Everybody knows. Really solid showing from him, and not just his goals. The guy will be on this team, and will make meaningful contributions.
Fast - Midseason form. Actually relentless
Buchnevich - Looked much stronger on his skates. Lets hope this is a sign of things to come.
ADA - Thought he looked great all night. Still has more to prove, but he looked like he did before he went down with the injury. Looks confident.

Decent:

Meskanen - Thought he was more noticeable towards the beginning of the game, but I would like to see more out of him. He seems to have the ability to be an NHL player
Pionk - I actually thought he wasn't having that good of a game until he scored the OT winner, but goals matter. Pray for him if he is stuck with Staal
O' Gara - Not Stellar, but looked like he gained a step, and may be a guy who actually can improve under a real defensive scheme
Lindgren - Looked solid all night. If this was a true meritocracy, he would be in front of Staal on the depth chart.

Meh:

Nieves - Started out looking all jittery, put a few good shifts together before being headbutted by a skating asshole. Uses his body to shield the puck really well, and has decent vision, but cannot really stick handle, or receive passes at an NHL level.
Gettinger - Just kind of existed out there.
Claesson - was passable, except for that woeful missed hip check attempt. That was embarrassing.
Fogarty: who cares, maybe he becomes Paul Carey
Schneider: who cares, maybe he becomes Paul Carey
Kreider: Whatever. Dialed it up at times just to show he can. He will be fine, and is out best player
Hayes: Not really that noticeable at all

Bad:

Staal: Just brutal. Thanks for the memories, but please go.
McCleod: status quo with him, which is absolute trash.
Lindqvist: Too many penalties, didn't make any noticable impact. Wouldn't be surprised if he didn't see any more games.

Agree with this totally.
I thought the only veteran that really worked his ass off was Fast, but Fast always plays this way! That's why he's been mentioned as a potential, future C of this team...

I disagree with most of this take. Not sure we were watching the same game.

I was thinking more Michael Sauer for Lindgren but with better first pass ability. I thought he played a very sound game which is what you would want from him when you have Shattenkirk and ADA on the team to take care of the offensive side of things.

Thought Staal was pretty good. A stable game. I thought Pionk’s positioning was a little weak at times. He didnt make significant mistakes, but he is battling it out with ADA imo and he ADA had the best game of them all. His skating was very good and he was involved all night.

I actually think our weakest line (McLeod doesn't Count) was the Kreider-Hayes-Buchnevich line, they just kinda floated out there. They padded their stats on the PP and they showed some glimpses here and there but it was a typical first pre season game for a line of "veterans".
