Not really, given the late round picks tend to move en masse in a relatively short cycle (teams typically rebuild every 3 or so years, and so the picks just shuffle around like that). They aren't allowed to trade 1st round picks, hence the giant baskets of later round picks instead. This magnitude of pick bundle is not exactly unusual in the OHL. It's still kind of fun to see it listed out like that, though.

I maintain that 1 PPG for Wood on a powerhouse team surrounded by much more talent actually represents a regression for him. He had much higher points&goals shares on his old team. Players with his draft pedigree rarely even play a 3rd year in the NCAA. Let alone stand pat at 1 ppg. Granted, he did start younger than most. But still. He should have numbers more like O'Hara/Fink's, something in the 1.5ppg realm preferably.

Yeah, it's not ideal. Still though, I thought he was falling off a cliff last year. At least he's maintaining good stats on one of the league's premier teams (elite competition). I wonder what they are thinking about that. Normally you would expect a #15 overall draft pick to sign before playing his senior year. But given Wood is only about to turn 20 next week, I could see them letting him go back to Minnesota next season?
Anyway, I guess there are going to be a lot of factors involved in that decision, how satisfied both sides are with the training/development there, his educational situation, etc. So who knows. But normally a guy with his draft pedigree would be signing as soon as his season ends. And maybe trying to get a game or two in with the Preds at the end of this season. That's probably what's going to happen with his teammate Snuggerud, who is also in his junior season. I'm not sure Wood's situation is going to be "normal", however.
This is a case where it seems better to let him "overcook" a little. He is young compared to most college kids, why start his contract and burn a year so early? Let him develop a little more and grow into his adult body before forcing him into an adult league he may not be ready for. Risk is if he goes back for senior year you walk him right to UFA. I'd rather sign him and let him play next year in Milwaukee.

Yeah, these are the risks when the player is the one who wants to go pro and start making his $$$. They have that leverage. Fabbro, Ufko, Del Gaizo all came out after their junior seasons. We were still able to get Stastney and Farrance after their senior years. Or some like Novak, Campbell, and Haider have even gone the AHL-deal route with us after their senior seasons. So it's quite a mixed bag. But worth emphasizing that the Vesey case is very much a rare exception. I wouldn't panic at all if Wood plays his senior season in Minnesota... likelihood is he'll still want to go pro, get money, play an NHL game or two at the end of next season, rather than wait until August 15th to go UFA. Signing in the spring is still the more common route even for those who do play out their senior years.
True, but why risk it? AHL is strong development league. It's not like he is tiny, he is big guy. He should be able ot hold his own there. He needs to improve his skating and his pace of play, but if 3 years in college haven't moved the needle no reason to think 4th will. Get him with our staff and work on getting him to the level we need him to be. And if our guys can't help him do that, we need to find better development guys.

Its amazing. We have 2 players in a 4 way tie in the NCAA points per game lead. O' Hara will likely end the season with more goals than total points last season. I dont know what happened to him but that is a major step. Fink was a point per game in his 1st NCAA season and has still managed to up his game this season. Excited to see what next season brings for both.
Wood went to a better team and will end up around a point per game like his freshman year.

O'Hara is definitely a totally unexpected story this year...

Yeah, it looks like his stats were fairly non-descript in his D and D+1 seasons, leading to not getting drafted either year? Then in D+2 he had a pretty good year in his final junior season in the USHL, albeit on a really stacked Tri-City team, so I don't know if many people would have read too much into that production? The Preds read enough into it that they drafted him, though. But he was already "late-blooming" in junior... before now "late-blooming" again in college?
What else from the stats page... mid-size (6-0/185) RW...
UMass has a smattering of other NHL-drafted prospects... but it's interesting to note that the next-highest scorer to O'Hara's 45 pts is Aydar Suniev at just 30 pts. So it's not like O'Hara is being "carried" by some other big-name prospect having a huge year. He's The Man there, significantly outscoring everybody else on his team.
What else? I see he was drafted in the 10th round in both USHL and OHL drafts, so definitely not seen as a very serious prospect coming out of minor hockey. Taking the "slow boat" from Toronto to playing Jr A hockey, then the USHL, and now 3 years of NCAA... he turns 23 this summer. In his actual draft year in 2020 Central Scouting ranked him #170 in NA... which is basically a typical "not drafted" ranking once you sprinkle in all the Europeans and goalies. And so it was.
We'll take this season's huge jump, of course and be intrigued. It's not super common for this to lead to anything with that pedigree, but good for him, he has at least worked his way to a pro contract, you'd have to think. Let's see where he goes next...
