Girard was interesting because his skating and IQ got him in the league fast, but he's never really gotten that much better than his first year or two. He basically walked into the league at 19-20 and was the same player he is today and some would argue worse. That's not something you see often in this league, but yes his size absolutely was the biggest factor.
If I remember correctly for all the crap he gets Pronman was very high on Girard his draft year and loved his NHL chances. Interesting to think back on. I also agree that ideally Molendyk is able to play with a little more mass and size than Girard who wasn't/isn't just short, he's got a very slight frame to go with it.
