Jesse Graham is starting to get some looks. I didn't know what to expect, but this kid can handle himself.

He just might be a homer out of our lower calibre (or so we think) prospect D depth. I think he will even outdo Mayfield....Not a big fan of Mayfield...he's too slow..not skating...but reaction and agility. He takes too long to stop the puck, move it and shoot it. REALLY SLOW..at least a full step slower than the NHL level.

i am surprised at how well he is handling the transition to the AHL. i thought his size would be an issue, but he is doing much better than i expected.

Ilya Sorokin looks like he is now firmly the backup for Metallurg Nk. Rafael Khakimov has taken over and started 7 of the last 8 games (including todays 1-0 shutout win). Khakimov is 24 years old and his numbers at this point are noticeably better than Sorokins at this point. Khakimov with the better save percentage 93.3 to 91.5 and goals against average 2.16 to Sorokins 3.16

I have a ton of clips from Sorokin from this season. I'll compile them all together and upload them as soon as I have the chance (next day or two).

Hes small and plays that same style but he doesnt have the shot Krug has....

have only seen small samples of both, but Jesse is a very good skater, with very good offensive instincts. surprisingly solid, defensively. will have to be much better to make the bigs, but he seems to have adjusted well to the AHL. again, it is still waaaay too early to make predictions or assessments on career expectations, but let's just say that he has has a good start in the pros.

Just to follow up on my post about Sorokin. I put most of what I had on Sorokin (most of the good stuff anyway) together into one video. It's about 8 1/2 minutes long but there is some really good stuff in there including a fantastic save on a penalty shot (to win the game). There's also a 15-20 second clip where the sound is stuttering (my apologies).

Prior to this season I had only seen Sorokin play 1 KHL game and I really didn't remember anything about him. This year I can tell you a few things about his game:

Pros:
Probably his biggest strength is is quickness or more specifically his ability to go side to side. Super quick getting over.
Takes away the low ice exceptionally well (excellent with pads and rarely gets beat 5 hole).
Positioning, plays angles really well even when moving (L-R and Front to back)
Skating (again, mobility and under control)
Reaction/Instincts really good hand eye.

Cons
A lot of rebounds, he gives up some juicy ones.
Has trouble at times with odd angle shots and holding posts (think Halaks goal the other night to Winnipeg where Potsma tapped it over his pad inside the post)
He is super at going side to side, but sometimes gets caught 'cheating'.

Don't really want to put this as a con but gets beat up top with some regularity, not because his glove and blocker are weak (they aren't, they're actually quite good) but it because he likes to play deep in his net a lot AND take away the low ice. Seems to be the new thing now with a lot of goalies (playing deep).

I wasn't a fan of the pick at the time of the selection. Mainly because I hadn't seen him AND I had (still have) a huge man crush on Brayden Point who went RIGHT after Sorokin. Still can't believe he dropped to 79 AND we passed. But I have to say, after watching a lot of Sorokin, I'm really pleased and perhaps even impressed with what I see. Oh I forgot, he handles the puck like a hand grenade. He needs to work on that.

Video will be up in a while... its going to take some time given its size.

GREAT scouting report, much appreciated ITM. I remember someone here at this board, maybe Chapin, had us taking him in his mock draft and was quite high on him. So I started reading up about him prior to the draft. I really liked what I read about him, and was psyched when we picked him. I really wanted the Isles coming away from the draft with two goalie prospects, and Snow and co did a good job picking Sorokin and Soderstrom. They weren't my first choices of goalies I wanted, but I really like them as prospects.

I scouted Sorokin while watching a pre-WJC tourny back in August, and I noticed a lot of pros and cons you mentioned. One pro I'd add is, he seems very calm and cool in net, which is impressive for a 19 year old. One con I thought he had, but you explained it quite well, I notice a lot of the goals he gave up were over his glove. As you mentioned, it may be because of how low and far back he stays in net. HOPEFULLY by the time he comes here, we will have a REAL goalie coach.

So far, I'm impressed, he has obvious talent. Plus the rebound control will come with maturity.

Hopefully by the time he comes up we will have a new goalie coach. Every goalie that seems to come through the system either:

A) doesn't use size to advantage

B) can't control rebounds

It's something that REALLY needs to be addressed soon. Anybody else realize this?

i think it's because he's the one prospect in our system that none of us are really worried about. just lettin' him do his thing and ripen up in juniors till he's ready to pick.

This...

He was by Far my favorite player in the draft last year. He also fits like a glove for the Islanders. Exactley what we needed...wish he was 21/22 already so he could be playing with JT and Okposo.

Love the Sorokin report.

About Point, I've talked to him several times (once in a fairly good mood and once in a not so good mood) and can say that he really is on the small side and doesn't give the impression that he'll get much taller or all that much more defined. In addition, he was really on the outside looking in for the (barely) bronze medal winning Canadian team at the U18. Little reason was given for why. I somewhat detected that he doesn't have the simplest or most solid character. That's just MHO based on two interviews.

I wouldn't be surprised if he really wasn't on the map for a number of teams, especially a club like ours. His numbers should speak volumes, but I think there were teams that viewed him as the type of kid you take a chance on in the 6th-7th round.

Just my two cents.

What a selfish player.

3 goals and 11 assists in 7 games. Although, if I'm being honest, he got credit for an assist in one game that he should not have (he wasnt even on the ice) and they never changed it.

A couple of these tonight were really very nice looks. He was all over the place tonight, Windsor had no chance of winning this game tonight without him (obviously).

All that said, I DO understand why he has a reputation of being selfish. Josh looks to skate and dangle 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.... looks for the open man 4th MOST times. It's understandable though when you see his skills.

Slow upload tonight.... she's grinding at about 70% on youtube now.

Nice to hear on a dismal night for Islander's hockey.

Thanks for the scouting report ITM, Sorokin sounds like Poulin re: lateral movement pre-knee injury.

Ho-Sang is filthy with that puck, his technical abilities are impressive. Hoping he can translate that to the NHL ice.

The only big thing holding him back is his size...I hope he can bulk up.

I've been worried about MDC from day one and would not have drafted him. Fortunately, I'm wrong a lot and I hope I am this time too. I was encouraged watching the draft by his skinnyness. Lotsa fillin' out to do. We'll see.

Part of me really liked Ehlers at the draft, but Ho Sang looks kinda like the same player to me. Very impressive wheels, turning ability, and acceleration(sounds like a car!) and does so effortlessly. And I love that he seems aggressive, driving to the net. It's early, but this could turn out to be quite the homerun pick in a few years.
