He was less of a noob at that point than our current GM.

Even if your statement is true, and that can be debated, does it make my statement any less accurate? In addition, I never said it was a bad thing. Just made an observation.

IMO, Howson issues as a GM was being an effective leader and manager, and managing people - whether that was people in the organization or the players.

It doesn't matter how long he had or hadn't been working in the league, he lacked the ability to lead change in the organization.

Yeah. By the time he finally started to realize what the problem was (culture), he had run out of time to effect change throughout the organization. I hope it was a learning experience for Scott, it would be nice to be able to hire people and let them carry out your vision, thats the way it should work. I think we can trace the experience back to not cleaning out Operations when he got here, be it from a fear that whoever you bring in may surpass you or what. Something Portzline hinted at for years was that you can't be afraid to hire people smarter than you, maybe Scott was insecure in his position? I don't know....

I'll be interested to see where his career takes him over the next decade, and if he ever again makes to a position of a serious decision-maker in another NHL organization. This is a league of retreads, coaches and players and management that fail spectacularly one place end up finding success (to whatever degree and what level is different) usually elsewhere. I'll be interested to see if Scott Howson's names crops up for anymore GM or AGM jobs in the coming years, I think that will be a good barometer of just how he's viewed as a viable executive in the coming years.

Today I learned that playing on my beer league softball team makes me ready for the Big Leagues.

Here's something else to consider....Chris MacFarland has been the with the CBJ since 1999. (14 years) During that time, he's been the manager of Hockey Operations, and he oversees minor league affilates. He was also named assistant GM in 2008.....

Anybody feel comfortable had MacFarland just replaced Howson??? I wouldn't have.

So basically, an AHL GM and an NHL assistant GM, that, to me, is wet behind the ears.....

And, by having the NMC, he can just say no. Also, I never said trade him to some random team for a 2nd round pick. I am not arguing that we have to trade him (though I think we should). I am arguing that we don't HAVE to keep him because of some agreement. I just think we should look to trade him and Prospal should be willing to be traded. You act like we are trading him to some bad place he will have to play at for 4 years. It will be a few months and most likely on a really good team. Man, that must really be tough to do ;).

Actually yes, for Prospal, it is. I know Vaclav a little from when he was playing back home in Czech republic and he's just extremely family oriented. I remember, when he came back from America, where he was during the break of the Czech Extraleague and lamented, how much have his kids grown up while he wasn't with them, mind you, that was only about 2 months after he first came over and started playing for Ceske Budejovice. He was also talking on the phone with his wife everyday.

That's also why i'm pretty sure, that he's not gonna waive his NMC...

Fool-proof plan;

1) Hold on to Prospal
2) Resign Vyborny
3)????
4) Stanley Cup

The only thing that trumps 'old man strength' is 'old man strength' from the Czech Republic.
We'd probably also have to reacquire Klesla, and find some way to poach Jagr from Dallas.

It isn't like he will be in Columbus all that time anyway. He won't be home when they play away games. I appreciate that he wants to be with his family, but I think he can handle not being in Columbus for a couple of months.

Wish we'd hear something about this. Would love to see Vinny come back another season, and stay with the team long term.

Agreed, Vinny was a big part of the culture change in the locker room...that change is on going, would love to see him back on the ice and eventually integrated in other ways.

Plus he's been in the top 5 in scoring for every team he's played for...

Something like 10 out of 11 of the past seasons.....

Double plus I want to see him score the cup winning goal in septuple overtime......

I'll sit and roll my eyes if they don't find a way to bring him back. We need him going forward for a number of reasons that have probably been discussed thousands of times already.

Fortunately, Jarmo had high praise for him in his interview with Portzline. Maybe that helps.

Two, maybe 3 forward roster spots available next year. I think Vinnie gets one if no better alternative emerges. Tough one to figure is if we obtain 2 guys thru trades or FA then do you keep a spot open in case Jenner has a tremendous camp? I'm thinking the answer is yes.

Sadly, at the end of the day decision will be made on what can Vinnie do for the Jackets this season, not what he has done for the past two.

Portzline Tweeted that Vinny wants to return, but the decision as to whether or not to re-sign him will likely not come until the Draft or, possibly, even the start of free agency.

With the contract the Flyers just gave Mark Streit, Prospal could get some serious coin elsewhere.
