If Horton or Clarkson get the money expect, the Jackets will have less than $3 million remaining under the salary cap. If both of them go elsewhere, the Blue Jackets could aim lower on the free agency board -- Valtteri Filppula? Viktor Stralberg? -- and ostensibly sign more than one guy. But that seems unlikely.

Also, if the Blue Jackets sign a free agent, it likely means the end of Vinny Prospal's career with the Blue Jackets.

This is from a Puckrakers blog on today's activity:

"We’ve had I-don’t-know how many conversations about Vinny today," Kekalainen told The Dispatch. "All the good things he brings to our teams, the scoring, the leadership. We’ve kept talking about him all day long, even after we signed Nathan Horton. Now it becomes a salary cap issue and we’ll see where we’re at, see how he, among the other candidates, would fit under the cap room we have left."

2.5 fits doesn't it?

It seems very unfair to Vinny and his family that back in June they couldn't work something out when his family was moving out of their rental house and back to the Czech Republic.

IMO, this relates more to whatever the plan was for Vinny joining the organization post-playing career not fitting into Jarmo and JD's plants.

If another team offers Vinny a big money contract, then they get to tell the fans that Vinny walked out on the team and they get out of the gentlemen's agreement.

I honestly think we are done unless a trade occurs. Only 2.6 roughly left in cap space on a 22 man roster. Sign Vinny for 2 and we are less than 1 mil from maxing out the cap. (Assuming Ryan Murray makes the team) That is absolutely no flexibility to add to the team down the road without making subtractions. Unfortunately, the people I would want to move all have NTC.

It would also mean no room for Boone Jenner to even make the team. If he comes to camp and earns a spot in the NHL. Someone has to get moved to make room.

Interesting how the CBJ came a cap team practically within the last week.

As for Prospal - trade DMac24 for a draft pick, and that would open up some money and space.

I want Prospal to be on the ice next April when this team wins its first ever playoff game.

Does in my book. Strikes me as odd that the organization wants people of character and yet it balks at following thru on its agreement with Vinny.

Current management has no agreement, gentle or otherwise, with Vinny. I think his value to the team is being evaluated and, if he's seen as the best piece to be added to the team, he'll be back. I, too, hope he will; but, if he's not, I hope the player replacing him is truly better. That's what Davidson and Kelelainen are paid for, making choices like that.

We have very little flexibility even without signing Vinny. Go look at what's left and other than Brendan Morrow and Mason Raymond there isn't much to be had and those two aren't exactly going to put us over the top as far as the Cup goes.

We have guys in Springfield that can step up to play D so I don't think we need a veteran D signed but I'm not so sure about W's from Springfield.

I think (hope) Vinny is better than a 50/50 shot to be re-signed.

Depends on what he is willing to play for. If he really wanting to play for Columbus would he take 1.5 - 2.0? Would that be insulting? He is still drawing a 1.667M buyout for the next two years.

How much of a cushion does the team need to allow for call-ups? I'm not really sure how the cap works when someone gets injured, if they go on IR (not long term) does their cap hit lapse until they come back or is it still in effect? If I remember correctly, last year somebody (Calgary?) couldn't field a full roster because they didn't have the space to bring somebody up.

At this point I am simply guessing that the FO would like to bring Vinny back but it is simply a matter of cap economics. Which is why they put it off until now to begin with, seeing how the dominoes fell.

Iginla just got a 6 million contract and Alfie a 5.5 million, Prospal is worth at least 3 million given those prices. I wouldn't blame him at all if he decided to go somewhere else.

He doesn't NEED to do anything, Jarmo didn't make that promise, JD didn't make that promise.

No, what's needed is to fulfill all of those other promises about "the right way" and "the right thing". What would be a bigger sign of that than to basically say, "It doesn't matter that we're not obligated to do this, we're doing it because it's what best for our team on and off the ice"?

Howson was criticized heavily (and still is) for letting a popular and still-productive Malhotra walk away and replacing him with Pahlsson. That followed months of negotiations with absolutely no end in sight. This doesn't involve negotiations; this involves what appears to be absolutely no interest in even letting a respected and still-productive veteran know where he stands.

Vinny had an agreement with the CBJ organization, not Howson personally. As an organization, their reputation is on the line. How will they treat an older player who has been a key part of their turnaround and who was still capable of being their leading scorer last season?

How will free agents see the Jackets organization and their promises when words goes around how badly they screwed Vinny's family?

Howson does not make deals or agreements on his own behalf but on the behalf of the Blue Jackets Organisation. So one can argue the agreement was made between The Jackets Organisation and Prospal and not between Howson and Prospal.
If so the agreement stands even when Howson is gone.
What kind of business is it that does not stand up to agreements?
1st law of Business is to deliver no matter what.
Just throwing it out there.

If someone can produce evidence that someone in ownership personally made this promise to Vinny, then I'll change my mind, but otherwise it just sounds like something Howson promised to Vinny over a couple of beers at Gordon Biersch.
