c'mon now, he is
Price is in the midst of his second terrible season in the last three years and whoever trades for Price is getting him for 6 more seasons. I think you are underestimating the risk any GM is taking by making this trade. I'm not saying Price can't return to form but as it stands right now I think his value is far less than most would expect and that is precisely the reason why he won't be traded.

I have a legit question,

how can the CArolina win ( in 1-2 years) with Mrazek and Reimer ?

By signing a goalie or promoting someone from within. Both Mrazek and Reimer are signed through 2021 so the opportunity to sign a UFA is wide open.

If they want to test the market this off-season, they can look at Holtby or Markstrom or Lehner and deal or buy out Reimer.

If they want to run one more year, you could look at Raanta. But I think the market looks better this off-season. It certainly looks younger this off-season.

If the Canes are going to make a trade for a goalie, dealing for a pending UFA makes more sense than going after Price.

so we are keeping Price if we rebuild... ?

Pretty much. Might lose him to Seattle.

If he does get traded, it'll be to a team that can actually afford him because it would be extremely unwise to retain salary for the next 6 years (unless you want to rebuilt for that long).

Nobody is trading significant assets for a guy who has a .909 sv% since the start of 2017/18. Certaintly not for a 32 year old earning $10.5m for the next six seasons.

There is far too much risk attached to that kind of trade. The reward is relying on a player in his 30's is going to rediscover his form from his 20's and being able to maintain that for at least the next four years for it to be worthwhile.

If nothing goes well before the break and we decide to rebuild and trade Price, one of the best destination for him would be Carolina, who's without a true elite #1 goaltender.

From our biggest news outlet here:

Is Price going to the Hurricane ?
What would be the package from Carolina, they also have 2 first ?

is it a possibility for the Hurricane ?

Reimer + 2020 first + Pesce

FOR

Price + 2.5-3M retention

lol. Montreal could retain 50% and it would still be a no. Zero chance they get an asset like Pesce or a 1st back.

Doubt a 2M retention would destroy our future

Never say never. We've seen worse contracts moved.

ITT fans balk at the idea of Price at 7.5-8.0 cap hit yet think nothing of paying Reimer and Mrazek 6.5 combined.

Mrazek and Reimer are signed for 2 years at that figure, Price is signed for 7. Price has also been by far the worst of the three this season, Reimer was also considered a cap dump with negative value when they acquired him, and most importantly, the proposal with Price at $7.5-8M also had them sending Brett Pesce and a first round pick. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Carolina fans balking at that absolute atrocity of an offer.

How would the Canes even afford his cap hit?

Hurricanes TDL accrued cap space = 5.5M
Reimer to MTL = 3.4M
Total = 8.9M
Price = 10.5M
Difference = 1.6M

It wouldn't be that difficult to figure out in the short term because Carolina will have accrued 5.5M of cap space.

Realistically, Carolina has to include a player that makes more than 2.5M in the trade so that they can shed the 1.6M and be able to fill up the additional roster spot created by including the player at 900k or less. Or alternatively, Montreal has to retain 1.6M.

I would not expect a big return for a Price trade for the following reasons:
1) He has a NMC. Chooses his destination. This will limit the market.
2) He has a huge cap hit. As good as he is when he is on his game, this will further limit the market.

If Montreal retains a lot, that changes things.

I'd expect something like....

2020 1st Round Pick (Protected)
2021 3rd Round Pick
B Prospect
James Reimer
Trevor van Riemsdyk

for

Carey Price

That would work cap wise, but it would only allow Carolina to call up either McKeown or Claesson as replacements on defense.

Alternatively, for cap purposes they could work in a Niederreiter for Tatar swap.

The offer is bad. Price at 8.5 isn't

Habs fan here. Hurricanes wouldn't even do reimer for price straight up. He's performing below your average #1 goaltender let alone an elite one for 2 of the last 3 years and is signed for eternity at the highest goalie AAV in the league.

All we can hope now is that Seattle somehow claims him or that we trade him for a cap dump(we'll still need to retain 2-3m/season even in a dump trade). We really should've let him walk in UFA, this is a disaster.

Similarly, Panthers are f***ed with Bob. They're stupid lucky they locked up barkov and huberdeau before they exploded into stars otherwise they'd be in a world of hurt with that contract.

With Price at $2m retained, Reimer and Mrazek combined still make $2m less, are signed for 5 years less, and aren't in the rapid decline of their careers. Given the production of them all this year, I'll take my chances with the platoon over the guy who is unlikely to see his production match his salary again, even after salary retention.

And then, even with this considered, you thought it would be fun to throw in a first and Pesce with no additional kickbacks on your end.

No. Thanks.
