It’s Preseason but if you don’t see the value of reps, take a look at the NFL. It’s a wasteland of injuries and crappy on the field product.

My one complaint about “NHL Bravado” is the old school “Ironman” streaks. They should take a page out if the NBA and rest guys throughout the season. I can see this benefiting teams like Tampa who have a ton of playoff milage.

PBP is very difficult and he’s been solid at the other media stuff he’s done. They’re obviously just letting him get his feet wet as a back up. You gotta start somewhere.
He's a 15-year-old who feels he's an expert on the game when in fact most of his observations are merely opinions.

I.e - "In this situation so and so HAS to this".

Sadly, this is common with most of the new breed of sportscaster and ESPN talking heads and he will likely be national in no time.

Doing your homework and researching is no longer a prerequisite when you can just follow Twitter or Instagram instead.

Agreed on load management.

With it being such a topic in the NBA I’m surprised no NHL team has taken it up as well.

The culture just isn't there for it yet. It's been mentioned by journalists over the last few years and top players are basically saying, no, we don't want to do that.

It's easily the worst preseason out of the 4 major sports. Hockey thrives off intensity and compete but when most of your guys playing this late at making the roster then it becomes pointless to watch. Speaking of which, I didn't catch any of the game but glad to see our goalies actually looking competent. If we get around like a 910-.915 save from both, we'll be sitting very pretty in the regular season standings.

I disagree about this, though, baseball and football seem far worse, football's is a competition for 15 guys who comprise the back end of the roster and you barely see on Sunday, if at all, and while spring training baseball is still mostly baseball, it's hard to get excited about a baseball player just by watching them play.

Probably because he looked nowhere near this good. At least on a consistent basis. He seems to have filled out more, his skating looks better, basically every aspect has improved over this past season. That outlet to Tatar was NHL stuff.
Was more an opportunity to play more minutes since the Comets used veterans like Russo and Wotherspoon in top minutes.

Can see Vukojivic being like those guys from the glory years like Pellerin, Souray or Weinrich who wound up having long NHL careers elsewhere due to the depth in the Devils' system.

Watching the highlights again, Holtz had a strong game. Hit 2 posts, made some good plays. He’ll keep on getting those chances and with his shot they’ll start to go in.

He seems way more comfortable, quick and his decision making looks sharper. Great stuff!

Ruff’s comments about Johnsson give me optimism (about his doom).

I didn't understand. You did watch none of preseason devils games?

I'll watch them here and there but I can't get fully invested into them this late because most of the rosters are already set and you can see guys play lacksadascial sometimes in them.

The culture just isn't there for it yet. It's been mentioned by journalists over the last few years and top players are basically saying, no, we don't want to do that.

To me personally, that's more entertaining if that makes sense. Usually you know what guys are gonna make it on hockey rosters in the middle of August unless someone completely wows in preseason like what happened with Mercer last year with us. Yeah, I probably shouldn't have included baseball, I know that preseason/spring training is pretty bad too.

Load management is garbage and one of the main reasons the NBA is a joke league
Except for being entirely reasonable.

If you’re a team with championship on it’s mind, then you should worry about load management.

If you don’t mind wearing your players out and having them at lesser strength later in the year, then play your players every game for max minutes. If you want to keep your players at peak performance as much as possible, then periodically give them time to recharge.

The NBA refs make the league unwatchable at times but resting guys once in a while makes a lot of sense. Look at the NFL approach to playing. It’s brutal and terrible for thr players. If you have a guy with a sore ankle or calf strain he can play decently if he skips back to back games or has a night off when it acts up. I don’t think a perfectly healthy young player is taking a night off.

Don’t want to jinx it because devils goaltending gonna devils goaltending but

Vanecek looks like an average to above average goalie right now
I don't know if we have been mired in suck that bad but he looks like a hall of famer compared to what we have seen.. is that what NHL goaltending looks like...?

whats crazy to me is vuko wasn't even full timing in utica - he played in adirondack a few times last season
i thought he looked outstanding in the first two periods fell off in the third a little.. but i would like to get one more look at this dude..

please elaborate what did he say.. i see no need for him taking a roster spot from several guys

I know people are a bit split on him, but I was very happy with Matt Loughlin during last night's broadcast. Not so much for his play by play (which I don't think was bad either), but for his commentary.

For a guy that's been employed by the organization for at least 22 years or maybe, he's surely not a blind company man.

He was going into the goalie competition and he wasn't trying to force the meme and propaganda that many people in the organization have been throwing out there on broadcasts and internet webcasts (the guy on the intermission report was doing it last night) that its Blackwood's to lose and this year is about him proving he's the goalie he was over 2 years ago (it made me nauseous listening to that spiel last night from him). He was complimenting Vanecek and talking from a place where maybe Vanecek is this team's starting goalie and will get more games than Blackwood this year.

And he was refreshingly honest about the Islanders. He was skeptical of Lou's plan to leave a lot of the same team intact and that it was just about guys having down years and the long road start to the season. And he was super skeptical, saying ''Yeahhhhhh but they're another year older'' and even went as far as to pick apart their back to back conference finals appearances and how he doesn't believe they would have done that in normal seasons.

Since Matt has almost exclusively been on the radio and off TV for over 15 years now (probably since Steve first joined the broadcasts as an intermission and pre/post game anchor) other than a few fill-ins when Steve was out with covid, I haven't really gotten much of his perspective in a long time, but I enjoyed the honesty.

I hope Ruff continues to split time during regular season.

I think it is best long term that we don't try and ride a hot goalie. Even after a Vanecek shutout, I would want to see Blackwood in next game.
Wait a minute

You mean to tell me if one of the goalies starts looking bad, then the other guy has a really good game or even gets a shutout the next game, we have to go back to the other guy (who stunk up the joint in his last start or possibly last few starts) no matter what? Really?

I don't understand this thinking and you're not the first person I've seen say this on here this offseason.

What is this, Jacques Lemaire in 1993? Alternating Terreri and Brodeur every other game, no matter what? What if we don't have the luxury to do this? We might not be able to afford to rotate goalies every other game no matter what, like the 93-94 Devils were.

And even then, Terreri did not have a bad season that year, although Brodeur was considerably better.

They should only be rotated if both guys are just playing alright or if neither one is particularly playing well.

Yea Matt gets it and he's a honest guy.

The interview is pretty short, but when asked for a assessment of Johnsson he said he was battling to prove he should have an opportunity to make the team.

Ruff said in games there have been some struggles and he’s had opportunities that have gone by him but he’s trying to give AJ every opportunity to find his game.

So he didn’t compliment him on anything other than effort level and doesn’t think he found his game. Good news all around lol.

Just saw that the Bruins waived Connor Carrick today.

Guess they don't really like him either.

The Panthers didn't think much of him, as he spent the entirety of last season in Charlotte of the AHL.
