I liked Nemec, but zero reason to be rushing him.

A year in Utica is going to do so much for him
With how good Marino is looking a right side of Hamilton Severson Marino is pretty damn good and there is zero need to rush Nemec. It won’t hurt his development playing in the AHL so why not play him there. Reward him with a few call ups throughout the season but there are zero reasons to rush him or have him play sheltered minutes. Play the shit out of him in Utica and use him in all situations.

Above lines has clicked immediately and should be kept together for opening night.

Therefore open spots up for debate are:
1. Winger to join Hischier and Bratt. Is it Tatar or Sharangovich?

2. How is the 4th line assembled.
My 1 on 1 thoughts:
4LW: Tatar v Johnsson. I think Sharangovich should play top 6, which leaves Tatar to battle Johnsson for final spot. I think Tatar more consistent and he can also move up the lineup if necessary. I'll be picking Tatar and scratching Johnsson.
4C: McLeod v Boqvist. I think McLeod gets picked because he has more tools than Boqvist. He can PK, win faceoffs, good defense and be physical. While Boqvist is clearly a better offensive player and potentially has better chemistry with other offensive players. Its a tough choice but knowing Ruff, he'll favor McLeod.
4RW: Bastian v Zetterlund. Zetterlund is winning this battle. He looks like he belongs, can do everything that Bastian can do with better offensive potential.

Palat-Hughes-Holtz
Sharangovich-Hischier-Bratt
Wood-Huala-Mercer
Tatar-McLeod-Zetterlund

Extras: Johnsson, Boqvist, Bastian.

The tricky decision with the forward extras is who gets waived. If they want to carry Bernier as a 3rd goalie, then two of the above 3 extra forwards gets waived.

I think Boqvist is my first forward waived unless he can have a big performance in the remaining exhibition games to prove he belongs and should be picked ahead of McLeod. He probably needs to show he is capable of doing all the defensive tools that McLeod can do.

Johnsson is better than Bastian so Bastian would be the 2nd person to be waived if NJ want to carry 3 goals.

There is an increased risk that both Boqvist and Bastian will get claimed off waivers as their contract is cheap. While someone like Johnsson who has a larger contract will have a better chance of passing through waiver as most teams are up against the cap.

On defense, we are largely set. I don't think Nemec makes the team even though he looks capable straight away. Give him a year in AHL.

The only spot I see up for debate is who should be the teams 7th defenseman. Do we give Bahl or Okhotyuk the experience, whereby they can rotate in and out of the lineup with Smith. Bahl would be my favorite over Okhotyuk as he can play both left and right sides.

Or do we sign Hickey for 1 year to ride press box so Bahl and Okhotyuk can play every game in Utica.
I vote for:

Bahl in the NHL as 6/7 D. I don't think Bahl has anything left to learn in the AHL and I'd like to give him a real chance to earn Smith's playing time.

Johnsson and Boqvist both waived before Bastian, because I like having the young physical winger option as the reserve forward, rather than the finesse wingers. Also, I think Bastian has a place as a 4th liner/14th forward going forward, while I think it's safe to say that Tatar and Johnsson are both in their final seasons with New Jersey.

I thought Dougie was okay - his defensive game wasn't great IMO but that is probably what we will get with him. I thought Nemec was very solid and looks like he could potentially be competent in a 3rd pair role - though we don't need to put him in that spot.

I don't know how we will be able to cut Zetterlund. He is going to make one of Tatar/Johnsson very expendable.
make them expendable? weren't they expendable last season? o_O

The Haula and Palat additions are basically what Fitz was fishing for with Johnsson and Tatar but on steroids. Haula gets dangerous chances, much of what was expected of Johnsson, but has extra gears and can center.

Palat is the heady addition you were expecting out of Tatar for the top-six, but with higher compete, a similar skill level, and a guy you who the coach trusts to play come playoff time. Palat made an amazing cross-ice, area pass just inside the blueline tonight that the trailer was able to pickup with speed as they entered the zone.

Obviously need Nico healthy, and really hope Tatar on his line was not a permanent fixture. Nico really found a nice niche last season on zone entries by drawing defenders towards him as he attacked the middle, then just drop passes for his trailer. Ideally, Shara or Holtz is that trailer as it gives them a chance to let it fly

If they put Tatar with Nico and Bratt, they're dumb sorry.

I think Johnsson should just be disposed. I'm not sure how I feel about Tatar as 4lw but he's definitely a good benchwarmer and slot into the 3rd or 2nd line when injuries occur. I'd like to keep Bastian around as an extra man but I'd even be interested in Zetterlund on 4lw and keep Bastian in.

Not sure about Boqvist vs Mcleod.

I wish i was joking, but I’m 100% serious. He was limping in the lounge. Not sure how they say only cramps lol

Just a really extended bout of cramps. Don't worry, he will be ready to go for the 23/24 season.

He’s not going down

I have less PTSD about this than our medical staff, but again, I'll believe it when I see it. This team loves Geertsen way too much for me to believe they won't keep him. Basically it comes down to whether you think Tatar or Johnsson will be waived, which I highly doubt. They are going to try to sneak Zetterlund through just like they did Studs....

It simply can't happen because it would be so stupid if Fitz to do it. Especially for the sake or Johnsson
the sake = Tatar?

:D

Mcleod getting suspended still an option? Not following that stuff to be honest.

Again, I am not giving this team the benefit of the doubt when it comes to injuries. They’re the medical equivalent of that Iraqi spokesman who was telling the world everything was fine while Baghdad was falling right behind him.

See you in mid November, Nico.

Here's the PA guy who did a good job last night, apparently he did a Rangers playoff game last year too but this is a good sample for anyone who didn't hear hear him last night...

Didn't see the game last night so I didn't hear him.

Yes yes yes! As a former PA guy, this a more professional PA guy as opposed to the gentleman that was not as qualified last year.
