I loved seeing our power play entries without the stupid ass drop passes. And how we just kept the puck moving.

Also our break outs, the use of the wings to take a short lateral pass if the cross ice pass wasn’t there.

Obviously there are going to be better systems this year and it’s a welcome welcome change.
I'll believe we've stopped doing that stupid thing if this occurs regularly during the regular season.

I still think it's preseason and Ruff isn't using the so-called "Playbook" yet so we could go back to the infuriating drop passes again.

Very surprised about Marino. Played better than expected.

The Geertsen/Bastian/McLeod line was bad. I have no idea what the broadcast was talking about. They got hemmed in their zone in the first 10 minutes and were a big reason the team did bad. Then they had a good 10 minutes after that and announcers fall in love.

Nemec was bad but in a good way. He played physical, which was a negative of his during the draft. He did all the little things wrong though. Give him a year in the AHL to fix his timing and it should be fine. Just gotta work on that shot.

Not really what my point was, but that is correct as well.

Bratt and Jack play similar roles.
Nico and Palat play similar roles.
Holtz and Sharangovich play similar roles.

So, it makes sense to form 2 lines with these 6 players which includes Palat with Jack.

It was so annoying watching them force it last season when the pkers were already in position to just deny the entry.
Also on the power play (and also actually at even strength) we set up down low behind the net and ran plays from Gretzky-ville for opportunities out front more in this one game than I saw us do in a dozen games altogether last year. It created great chances (and Jacks goal). And in principle it forces the defense and the PK to defend you differently - opening up a lot of other options.

Just one exhibition game but pretty encouraging.

saw nico & Tatar in the bmw lounge, nico is limping. Season is over

Loooooooolllll no way

It's the dreaded 36-hour cramp.

Yep, another season of Nico not being healthy. I predict he will be out for at least 2 months

I wish i was joking, but I’m 100% serious. He was limping in the lounge. Not sure how they say only cramps lol

I’d rather carry three goalies and dump one or both of Johnsson and Tatar. Maybe just maybe Bernier could help if a goalie is hurt. Johnsson and Tatar are completely replaceable to me.
Yes we have younger , as skilled or more skilled , cheaper , home grown players that are more effective in all aspects of the game compared to Johnson and Tatar. Only good thing is those two only have one more year left

Makes ya wonder if they were busy "looking the other way" during those first 10 minutes (maybe distracted by Dano's talk of Geersten's Beef)...

Good chance for Haula, created by Wood. I like how both of them have looked this period.
I’d like those two to stick together on the 3rd line with Zetterlund. Where the hell does Mercer play then? With Nico and Bratt? Then where does Shara go? If Holtz looks good with Hughes and Palat….
Zetterlund on the 4th line seems like a waste jt I guess better than him not playing at all.
So in other words I habe no god damn clue who is going to play where.
Pretty sure Vanacek and Blackwood are playing in goal though… I dont think they can crack the 12 forward group and our D parings are going to be hard to decide as well.

All three of those guys should be in Utica based off of play so far …
I know it’s all but 2 pre season games but still. It will be hard to send Zetterlund down plus find spots for Tatar and Johnson …

I like those lines but not very confident yet in Rango producing without Jack.

Above lines has clicked immediately and should be kept together for opening night.

Therefore open spots up for debate are:
1. Winger to join Hischier and Bratt. Is it Tatar or Sharangovich?

2. How is the 4th line assembled.
My 1 on 1 thoughts:
4LW: Tatar v Johnsson. I think Sharangovich should play top 6, which leaves Tatar to battle Johnsson for final spot. I think Tatar more consistent and he can also move up the lineup if necessary. I'll be picking Tatar and scratching Johnsson.
4C: McLeod v Boqvist. I think McLeod gets picked because he has more tools than Boqvist. He can PK, win faceoffs, good defense and be physical. While Boqvist is clearly a better offensive player and potentially has better chemistry with other offensive players. Its a tough choice but knowing Ruff, he'll favor McLeod.
4RW: Bastian v Zetterlund. Zetterlund is winning this battle. He looks like he belongs, can do everything that Bastian can do with better offensive potential.

Palat-Hughes-Holtz
Sharangovich-Hischier-Bratt
Wood-Huala-Mercer
Tatar-McLeod-Zetterlund

Extras: Johnsson, Boqvist, Bastian.

The tricky decision with the forward extras is who gets waived. If they want to carry Bernier as a 3rd goalie, then two of the above 3 extra forwards gets waived.

I think Boqvist is my first forward waived unless he can have a big performance in the remaining exhibition games to prove he belongs and should be picked ahead of McLeod. He probably needs to show he is capable of doing all the defensive tools that McLeod can do.

Johnsson is better than Bastian so Bastian would be the 2nd person to be waived if NJ want to carry 3 goals.

There is an increased risk that both Boqvist and Bastian will get claimed off waivers as their contract is cheap. While someone like Johnsson who has a larger contract will have a better chance of passing through waiver as most teams are up against the cap.

On defense, we are largely set. I don't think Nemec makes the team even though he looks capable straight away. Give him a year in AHL.

The only spot I see up for debate is who should be the teams 7th defenseman. Do we give Bahl or Okhotyuk the experience, whereby they can rotate in and out of the lineup with Smith. Bahl would be my favorite over Okhotyuk as he can play both left and right sides.

Or do we sign Hickey for 1 year to ride press box so Bahl and Okhotyuk can play every game in Utica.

Yeah the forward decisions are going to be difficult. I think we're a worse team with Tatar and Johnsson. I'd hate to see them cost us a Zetterlund or someone else who actually contributes positively to hockey games.

Fun game to be at even if it's pre-season, was just nice being at the arena again. Guys played well and scored some nice goals, some solid goaltending too.

Noticed they are building 4 different things in the black club seats in sections 7/9/18/20. No clue what they are though, maybe some sorta suite type deal inside the clubs? Didn't really look like anything yet.

So an adult
Guess I wasn't the only one who thought last year's guy sounded like a boy trying to sound like a man. LOL.

I heard a sample of the new guy on Twitter and it sounded like a legit PA announcer to me. Thank goodness. That last dude was downright cringy and embarassing.
