Yeah for the vets no one is panicking. They also had a short summer so it wasn't surprising. But it was surprising for the players fighting for the #4 and #6 spot. They were awful. Only Emberson stood out greatly in the game against Winnipeg

I'm personally content with Emberson on that second pairing. My worry is that 3rd spot right now being covered by J Brown who for God reasons I'm not sure why there's such an infatuation for coming from Stauffer especially.

The first games of pre season are for all the non nhl players to go turbo. Even depth nhl players like Stecher shouldn’t be judged by it.

I’ve said it for years and years and years. Don’t like this defence.
We have Ekholm, Bouch and Nurse and then a bunch of junk. We keep adding old forwards and neglect the D, rinse and repeat.

Well I guess when they reacquire Ceci for peanuts at the deadline they'll be right back to a Cup contending core, lol.

We'll see how it goes, personally I think the Oilers defensive coaching system is the reason for improvement in the D, not the players. We didn't really add anyone big last year and the defensive game improved by miles to the point where probably for the first time in the McDavid era they were able to play "boring, low event, low shot" hockey for long stretches in actual playoff games.

But I will say this -- Knob and Coffey better have their shit together and ready to go for game 1, they can ask Jay Woodcroft what happens if you believe too much in feel good vibes carrying the day.

Please no Ceci.
I agree Coffey has been great back there but I’d like to see someone in our new top 9 get moved for a legit top 4D, add a pick if need be but our 4,5,6 D are a big woof for a org looking for a cup.

Obviously yeah, I just find it funny that we did retain 4/6 of the d corp that just went to a game 7 of a Cup Final, including all of the top 3, which is lets be honest is by far the most important components.

It's not like we have a radically different D group.

After 2006 I'd have given my left nut to have retained all three of our top D and 4/6 overall even if it meant the other two D were scrubs.

The top 3 need some help, after all we didn’t win.
Seems like we’ve regressed on D not improved. We need to deal for another Ekhom type and if that costs a 5M guy from the top 6 to do it then so be it.

If they deal for another Ekholm type they'd be the best D in the NHL. Probably comfortably.

Florida was getting very little to nothing the last 4 games of that Finals series, same as Dallas before them, and Vancouver and LA too.

Basically we started off the playoffs with two shit defensive games against LA (5 GA and 4 GA) and I went "uh oh, maybe Knob/Coffey aren't ready for this playoff heat", but right after that the Oilers shut LA's ass down for the rest of the series (4 goals total in the last 3 games combined for them) and then proceeded to do that to Vancouver and Dallas and Florida too as all of those series went on.

Same. He should take Perry’s spot even though it won’t happen.
I hope both are on the roster though. Perry is actually remarkable around the net, he’s always been elite at scoring and finding the puck right in front of the net. If he can impart some of that on Lavoie, that would make Lavoie that much deadlier as a goal scorer. He’s got a beautiful one timer and a heavy shot in general, he’s got the size and I think he’s gaining the will to battle around the net too.

Ever since we had Oates play his last couple months with us and seemingly imbue Horcoff and Stoll with his face off ability, I always hoped that we’d get that again with other vets coaching up the youth. Doesn’t seem to work out that way usually.

There’s a lot of really talented players with different skill sets, I think Lavoie belongs around these guys and it’ll be good for his development. Hollands gone now so who knows, maybe guys like Gleason and Lavoie make the team right out the gate.

Preseason. Oilers will want to weed out guys fairly early as to not waste the players time and the team's. When they know full well player will either be on the farm or elsewhere. 95% of the roster is set.
The only spots up for grabs is 13th forward. I doubt Brown or Stecher get sent down to start the year.

I doubt they carry a 13F. They have 945K in cap space with Kane on the roster. Adding another F removes almost all of the cap space they can accrue.

I'm happy with Emberson as well. I'm positive he can handle the #4 spot till the deadline. He's got top 4 potential but he's just young. I don't like Josh Brown or Troy Stetcher one bit as consistent #6 Dmen.

I don't know what the team sees in him and it's pathetic hearing Stauffer trying to hype Brown up as something. Only reason he likes him is because he can start a fight (he usually gets beat up) and that reminds him of old school hockey which is most likely his fetish lmao

You saying Stecher can’t handle being a number 6 D based off of 1 early pre reason game is ridiculous.

Brown I get though.

Emberson has played 30 NHL games and he’s supposed to be a 2nd pair RD on a cup contender?

I guess we wait and see on that one and hope for the best but it’s a massive gamble the Oilers are making to start the season. I’d rather they LTIR Kane and get a proven 2nd pair RD via trade now.

What is the big concern with Brown exactly? Just looking at stats I care about from last year looks like he was given shitty D zone deployment and came away as a break even player 5 on 5. Had above average numbers on the PK. He’s big and physical and a bit of a pest. Seems like a pretty good 6D to me. That was on a much worse team than ours too. Seems like he’s a similar player to Vinny who was pretty elite in that #6 slot and for less than half the price. Shrewd GMing by Jackson.

His analytics chart looks bad and it's about the only thing from the offseason that the glass half empty folks had to seize on to complain about so it got amplified more than it should.

He's not a great player, but the fixation some have with him is over the top.

I just don't have as much confidence in Stetcher. But I'd love to be proven wrong lol

Well thats what the Oilers believe lol. I agree with you. I want us to jump at a chance to acquire a top 4 RHD now. We tried doing this in 2017 and accrued cap space till the deadline. Guess what? No team wanted to trade with us unless we gave them the moon because they knew we were desperate for one JUST like this year. Waiting until the deadline is a mistake.
