really liked rees last night on the forecheck. very active stick, took away space well, and created a few turnovers that could have easily ended up in the back of the net. he's annoying as hell.

if not for jack drury having already had his dominant ahl season, pony would be in consideration to make the roster as well. they're going to want him to go down and produce over a full season but he looks close. drury looks good too, but that's not entirely unexpected. it would be tough to send him down again.

coghlan has made the roster. I think the final spot is down to dehaan and chatfield and if they go chatfield, they probably still give dehaan a deal to travel with the team and jump in when needed so they can shuffle chatfield and coghlan if they decide they need it. they don't want to waive chatfield. ethan is the likely odd man out, but they best flip him before the unexpected cuts start and somebody finds a project they like better.

The other thing with Fox is that the Canes still had some leverage, albeit minimal, so had more than one option. If we didn't trade Fox to the Rangers, the Canes could have either traded him to another team for minimal return with that team hoping that they could convince him to sign or we could hold onto his rights for another year so he'd have to go back to school for another year. Neither he, nor the Rangers wanted that; the Rangers in particular because a lot can happen in a year and they didn't want to risk losing him to someone else.

There really was no leverage for VGN. They had to move him.

Chatfield's extra year that sees him paid NHL money should scare teams off. Unlike some of the other players of that ilk that will hit the waiver wire in the next week, there are implications in a gamble that doesn't work out. His contract was structured the way it is for a reason.
Noesen's high guaranteed dollar amount should too.

the thing about coghlan and vegas is that they had a situation where they had 3 guys and 2 roster spots. they liked whitecloud enough to give him 6 years and they must have liked hague better than coghlan. they picked up ben hutton and resigned alec martinez, pretty much signaling that coghlan was the odd man out. they likely wanted more traditional defense in that last RD spot. plus, they have a kid named lukas cormier who scored 33 regular season goals in juniors last year who will be arriving soon. it's likely we wanted an asset back when we picked up patches contract and it made more sense to do coghlan than a 3rd or something even if coghlan's value was somewhat higher than that. for vegas it wasn't, because it was trade or waivers.

I think the Bear situation is an ongoing cat-and-mouse game with Vancouver, who have one of the worst right-handed groups of any playoff hopeful in the league.
Hey, how is Vancouver's roster of right-handed defensemen....not sure I've heard anything about it. :sarcasm:
If they were, the Adam Fox deal would be one of the worst in recent memory. We know it isn’t. This one may turn out to be a good trade for the Canes, but that says nothing about Vegas. They’re two independent evaluations.
Rees, Honka, and Gunler ended up being the return. I'm guessing Rees is a bottom 6 NHLer in the future. Gunler and Honka are both boom or bust wild cards. I like them both, but they will need a solid year in Chicago before any real evaluation can be made.
Chatfield's extra year that sees him paid NHL money should scare teams off.
Exactly, he should easily slide through waivers if necessary. I'd not be so quick to count him out. He's getting a lot of ice time as is Coghlan. Plus, he showed pretty darn well last season in his 16 games with the big club. Still, from all I've seen and read, I'd bet 3 RHD is Coghlan's to lose at the moment....and yes I'm discounting Bear as I still believe he won't be on the team when the season starts.

the thing with chatfield and coghlan is they're competing but not really. it's kind of strange, because you really need both guys represented stylistically in your lineup. I don't think we should rush that evaluation other than as it pertains to bear. we have breathing room to start the year and it wouldn't hurt us to carry them both and just swap them out with CDH or even go chatfield and coghlan at the same time, but I think they'd prefer to leave chatfield on the right side. the fact they're even trying him on his off side is evidence enough for me they don't want to demote him. we haven't tried that for many.
