Over 20M tied up between two players? Yikes.

The Hawks are already there. The Oilers are already there. And I suspect a few more teams will make it in the next few years. If the cap makes 80M by then it's only 25% of the cap. Which would have been two players making just over 6m when the cap came into play.
It's a lot of money but as has already been pointed out is going to be a new norm.

Well if you look at the money wasted on 3rd and 4th line producing players maybe locking up players who have actually earned their money is a good thing? When players like Brown and Gaborik come up for new contracts you'll have to wish them well in some other losing hockey market. And you are not paying Kyle Clifford 1.6 million to toil on the 4th line just to show off his receding all over needs to be shaved hair line during warmups. Technically the Kings have PLENTY of money to pay Doughty, it's just being used on a Ford Pinto, a Yugo and a Dodge Duster.

I still think of Brown has another decent season, he'll be easier to move. Gaborik will have to be bought out, frankly.

A Gaborik buyout only makes sense if we have a need for that cap space. As it is, by the time the season starts, we will probably have $5.75 million in cap space and no one to use it on.

So we should just burn off another year of Gaborik's contract and hope he gets back to some semblance of usefulness to lower any potential cap dump cost. At the very least, his buyout cost/term will lessen.

I'm saying if Drew was being paid 10 million a season in the past when Brown and Gaborik needed new deals you'd have to let them walk. That's the current NHL, superstars get paid, goalies get paid, top 6ers get paid, everybody else does not get paid.

...and when one or more of the highly paid guys on a team gets injured or craps the bed, the team with the more balanced roster wins.

That's exactly it and I think GM's will be trending towards. The CAP is never going to increase to accommodate the number of players who demand $$$. I'd have never given Price 10.5M, nor any goalie. It doesn't make them a better team, or a contender. Because they do not have the center strength required and now, don't have the $$. I love Weber, and everything he brings. I'd have built a better defense and traded for a center and if PRice wouldn't take a lower $$, he could have been traded. There were goalies (including Fluery) that could have been signed cheaper and the money saved, going to a center.
A team can win with a top defense, a top center, a good 2nd C and support on wing with good goaltending.
Drouin is elite, and they gave up a top prospect to get him but it doesn't make them a contender. He's a winger. Same with Ovie, hard to win w/o a stud legit #1 C.

If DD signs that $$ in LA, in the 12M neighborhood, then that will affect what TT should get. He could easily put up 60 Goals in the next 2 yrs and use that as leverage and the asking price then for a top winger of that caliber might be 7 to 8M. You then would have 30 M potentially tied to 3 players. And that wouldn't get them past deeper tea,ms with more balance.
So it's a hard path forward.
And it completely up to DD and where he sees his best future and best ops. To me, that is not in LA, too many other younger more skilled teams on the rise.
But , Luc and Blake are working that , I'm sure. And who knows, maybe in 2 yrs they would consider trading Kopitar. I'd rather and DD.

It has to me more than considering with Kopitar since he has a full NMC. He has to be wanting and willing to leave. Which I'm not sure that will happen.
Otherwise agree with everything you said Dee.

You guys worry too much. Who knows maybe down the line Kopitar, Gabby, or Brown develop some weird allergy to their equipment. :naughty:

Actually, I'm counting on the next lockout to resolve some of these issues.

True. And I guess as much as it's a very remote possibility, it would depend on the team in question. If it was appealing to him, if that team was a legit contender, he might be tempted. If there was a team, who was at the top of the standings and that was their hole to fill, that would give them that last piece they need to get the SCF, it might be appealing to him if the Kings were a team not in the position, a non contender. But then again, that team would have to have the 10M available.
I've followed hockey a lot of years and have seen trades I'd never thought happen.

I don't know, but I think this season is going to be one of the most important seasons after our last cup win. It's either going to be the team flourishes, plays better with a new style and players step up and improve... Or the team gets dismantled for a new beginning. Oi.
