Please don't go after Marner or EP.
We need guys who play a solid game and drive play every shift to build a team off of. I'm not saying they're available but players like Stutzle, Nylander, Pastrnak, etc are what the Hawks need. Soft opportunistic forwards don't build playoff teams.

Patrick Kane doesn't really have many equals in the game, he drove play every shift and could carry mediocre linemates. He wasn't a hitter but he wasn't soft either. Kane is always dangerous, Marner can get a point from one good shift and be a turd 50% of his other shifts.

I don't know what qualifies as soft for you, but Kane played about as much of a non-contact game as anyone I can think of. And he definitely had shifts where he didn't get involved at all in the play.

Kane was excellent on the walls, very hard to knock off the puck. He didn't engage in contact, but contact didn't keep him off the puck the way it does with many softer forwards.
He also proved time, and time, and time again that he could rip seams through the best defenses the NHL had to offer during the toughest games. When I think of "soft" it's not just about hits, it's about how easy a player is to shut down. Guys like Marner are easy to take off their game even when they have better players around them.

I second that point but idk how someone says Nylander is not soft. He noticeably avoids contact in the playoffs and gave up goals against because he didn't want to get hit on multiple occasions.
I've never seen a conclusion that Marner is soft but Nylander isn't making any sense.

When I watch the leafs drop their usual turds in the post season Nylander is often one of the few willing to go around the slot/crease in the offensive zone. Also seems to show up in the clutch moments too. He does have deficiencies that the whole team seems to share from time to time, I agree. But he's more of a driver than a passenger at pushing the puck/pace of the game when the game gets tough.
Marner uses his IQ to get into his spots but he's the kind of player that will either tear it up or be invisible depending on the matchups.

Nylander is one of most effective leafs on playoffs, althought haven't watched much of them for obvious reason.
Marner appears to play better when Matthews is out. Too polity to fight for spot light?

Wildcard race is still very tight in the east. Might not see so many sellers, which would benefit the Hawks.

How much do you think the Hawks should retain on SJ to improve the return? I'd be comfortable with around $2m and would think that would significantly increase interest.

I don’t know if the specific number matters as much as tying up a retention slot for many years. Limits future moves quite a bit

Even if true on future moves, it's worth it and likely a requirement to get SJ off the roster. McCabe retention ends this year so would still have 2 open spots moving forward.

what is his fair market value given his term? 6-6.5m? Might be closer to 3m in retention to get max value. Hawks take some money back then less retention

Currently on a one-year contract at the league minimum AAV and will still be a restricted free agent this coming summer.

would be shocked if he's here the entire contract, they need some of that term to come off before a team is willing to accept the term left given where he's at production wise and the hawks are willing to eat the retained money and/or pay the assets for the term that is left, that could be in that 3-4 years of term left range before that criteria is met

We will see, but don’t forget he has a NMC for the full contract. Wasn’t he rumored to only be considering Chicago, Dallas, and another city or two?
Given how Dallas is built they won’t be an option at any point during his contract.
